Old South Golf Links
About
The 18-hole Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C. is a public course that opened in 1991. Designed by Clyde Johnston, Old South Golf Links measures 6,772 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 129 and a 72.4 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Johnston designed Old South Golf Links in keeping with the beautiful Lowcountry's natural landscape. "Old South Golf Links was designed not only to provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf game, but also to preserve the natural beauty of the land," he said. "I felt that this was an opportunity to allow the golfer to experience up close the uniqueness of the site, its natural amenities and spectacular views."
The variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh, provided an opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.
Old South Golf Links is open to the public seven days a week. There is a clubhouse, restaurant and full-line pro shop on site.

Must play
I’m so glad we chose to play Old South. The staff was incredibly friendly and the course was absolutely beautiful. Our group had a wide range of handicap scores and everyone enjoyed it. I’d play this course again for sure. In fact, I’m already planning a golf trip to HHI and this one is a must play!
Good course, pleasant time
Overall the outing was good, weather held out which was great cause it was pouring right before we got there. The drink girl could come around more often, I had an earlier tee time but it wasn’t until hole 9 that I even saw her, by then we lost pace of play so I didn’t want to hold it up anymore but it was holiday week so I understand. Some greens were temporarily changes to shorter holes so those played funny and the distance tracker in cart was off.
We appreciate the 5 stars and are glad that you enjoyed your day at Old South. Soon the temporary greens will be closed but we will check the GPS yardage in the meantime. We hope to see you back on your next visit.
Four temporary greens in play. Course in good shape. Greens were not in the best condition, slow and shaggy. The cost was discounted due to having four temporary greens. Marshall had complimentary water which was much appreciated. I enjoy playing this course when visiting Hilton Head.
Beautiful round
My favorite course around HHI. Great links style layout with the right amount of challenge. Staff was very friendly and pace of play was good. A must for a HHI golf trip. And don’t forget to try out the 19th hole island green challenge!
Thanks for the 5 stars and for promoting our Island Green contest that benefits Wounded Warriors. We have sent them $1000s thank to the many guests who have participated.
Green were torn up.
There were temporary greens set up in the fairway short of the real greens. I was told give yourself a two putt on these. I would like to play again if they can save the greens. Fairways were in decent shape.
Greens are recuperating from a slow transition to summer grass. We do hope you get to play in the fall, winter or spring when this is not an issue.
No notice when purchasing of temporary greens
Not made aware of 4 temporary greens by Gilfnow. Totally disappointed.
Old South regrets you were disappointed. GolfNow was informed but neglected to post...our apologies on their behalf.
Beautiful couse
Greens had just been aerated so we're not the best. However, I loved the layout of the course. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Dual Tee Times Cause Issues
This has the potential to be an excellent course. We have played here many times over the years when we have visited Hilton Head. They schedule tee times going off both the front and the back nine. I guess this isn’t a problem until you have a group like ours who makes the turn and there is a10-some teeing off in front of you. The rangers were great and made them break into three groups, but we would have had to wait about 20 minutes before teeing off on the back. Instead, we drove past the groups, played the rest of the back nine and then came back around and played 10, 11, and 12. In addition, four greens were temporary greens. Will be back next year, but hoping they rectify groups going off the back 9. No one seemed to understand why they still do it with the exception of “it’s always been done that way.” Seems like a pain for everyone, including the course rangers.
The purpose of teeing off #1 and #10 between 8 & 10 AM in the summer is to accommodate more players in the "cooler" portion of the day. Few want to start their round in the late morning or early afternoon when the heat is most intense. Pace of play generally works well as groups criss-cross. We hope to see you next year.
tee time confirmation
I made 2 separate tee times for this course and golf now screwed up both. The 1st did not have the correct # of players, the 2nd did not have a tee time for me at all. If not for the flexibility of the staff, I would not have been able to play this course at all during my stay on HHI.
Very aggravating and disappointing.
We regret you had a poor experience with GolfNow but our staff was able to get you out. Please call the Golf Shop directly for a tee time and skip the middle man.
Southern Hospitality
Great views, great service and great vibes. Visiting from Missouri, we had the best experience at Old South. I wish I lived here so that I could become a member. Thanks for a great time!
Thanks for your kind words and the 5 stars. We hope to see you at Old South on your next visit to South Carolina.
Old South review
Greens were in terrible shape, many holes had temporary greens cut into the fairways.I usually love this course, I wouldn’t recommend it currently.
These issues are being addressed as quickly as Mother Nature will allow. Our rates are currently reduced to be fair to our guests. Try us in a couple of weeks and conditions will be much improved.
Necessary Evil
Played one of my favorite Hilton Head courses yesterday, Old South. Diidn’t realize they had four or five “ temporary greens”, and the rest of the greens were recently aerated…. BUT… got paired with a wonderful father and son and had a blast playing with them. I love the routing of Old South and the outside staff and the pro shop guys were exceptionally friendly. Fun day !! Thanks Old South!!
Enjoyed the course
1st time playing here. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Pace of play was great. A few of their greens are being worked on which is typical due to the weather this time of year. Husband and I enjoyed it and both agreed that we'd play it again.
We appreciate your thoughtful comments and the 4 stars. Keep us on your "must play" list for your next visit to the Lowcountry.
nice tract but the greens were burned
nice course. friendly staff. we only played the back nine due to time but 3 of nine greens were burned out so temp greens were set up.
Greens are not burned. The transition from winter grass to summer bermuda has been difficult. This is being addressed and with a little help from the weather (rain) all will be well soon. Rates are adjusted to compensate.
All greens need repair ALL !
As a follow up - I left a review a few days ago. It apparently hit a nerve. EVERY (18 / 18 ) greens on this course needs maintenance. Period !!!. There were " temporary " greens cut from the fairway because some of the greens were unusable. I'm just telling everyone what I would tell anyone - let them repair the course and then go play. Until the greens are repaired - I would not play this course. I've played it many times and have returned, but not again until they repair their greens. It's a great course - but in disrepair right now. facts and truth.
