The 18-hole Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C. is a public course that opened in 1991. Designed by Clyde Johnston, Old South Golf Links measures 6,772 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 129 and a 72.4 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.

Johnston designed Old South Golf Links in keeping with the beautiful Lowcountry's natural landscape. "Old South Golf Links was designed not only to provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf game, but also to preserve the natural beauty of the land," he said. "I felt that this was an opportunity to allow the golfer to experience up close the uniqueness of the site, its natural amenities and spectacular views."

The variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh, provided an opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.

Old South Golf Links is open to the public seven days a week. There is a clubhouse, restaurant and full-line pro shop on site.

Great Hospitality

The hospitality at this course was the best I’ve experienced at a golf course. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The course was in good condition minus one green. What a fun course to play.

Excellent course AND affirdable

The course was wide open so so played in about 3 hours. The starter let me go off early also. The conditions were great and the course layout is fantastic and very scenic.

Great way to experience Hilton Head golf for a North-Easterner.

I’m a reasonably discerning golfer (handicap around scratch) and found this course a fair test of game.

FAST ROUND

Went out as a single. Staff who checked me in was super friendly, same as the staff who loaded my bag. 1st tee was wide open and staff said won't run into anyone for a while. They were right. Caught group on 6th hole let me thru. Played in less than 2 hours. Ran into several other groups but all let me go through. Course we'll maintained even with lack of rain. Greens had solid pace. Will play there when back in town.

Greens were slow and had some bad spots.

Layout was enjoyable. Fairways and tees had a lot of grass. Greens were like putting on Velcro and very slow and bad spots here and there.

Same old story…

Greens burnt…tees burnt….same old story. Doesn’t matter June or July. Oh and forgot about the four temporary greens. Ugh.

June is when the greens transition from winter rye grass to bermuda grass. Mother Nature plays a great role in whether the transition is quick and easy or not. The extreme heat did not help. Try us before June or after mid-July to avoid this issue.

Very Very Hot

Even with an 820am tee time it was brutally hot by the time we made the turn to #10. Heat index was well over 100 and actually the round became un-fun for no fault of the course but for the weather.

My review is simply to ask the golf shop to provide added refreshment carts and possibly provide cool towels to the golfers. We only saw the cart lady 2 times in nearly 5 hours. The ideal would have been to have at least 2 refreshment carts.

Course is a good layout with a nice mix of "gettable" holes along with some that are "make your par and move along". There are also several holes that are dramatic dog-legs which provide shotmaking rather than length.

Condition wise it was in very good shape. Bermuda grass throughout and being in mid-July one would expect it to be at it's best and it was. Nice practice facility grasses. Greens were a little on the slow side but I'm sure it was to protect them from browning out.

Lastly, there are many courses one can play on HHead but just about all other have pricing at the $100+ point. Old South is well worth the $65 I paid.

We appreciate your comments and wish there was a way to cool your round. A second beverage cart is not feasible but we do offer coolers with ice and water for $6 in the Cafe. On occasion we will put a cooler of water out with the ranger pass to golfers. If you call the restaurant they would have a cooler waiting for you to pick up between 9s.

Very enjoyable round

Early tee time on a hot summer day. Very busy Saturday in mid-summer. The course ranger did a very good job of keeping things running smoothly. Course was in great shape, I’ve never been a fan of the layout on hole number 16 but the rest of the course was very good. Looking forward to going back.

Must play

I’m so glad we chose to play Old South. The staff was incredibly friendly and the course was absolutely beautiful. Our group had a wide range of handicap scores and everyone enjoyed it. I’d play this course again for sure. In fact, I’m already planning a golf trip to HHI and this one is a must play!

Good course, pleasant time

Overall the outing was good, weather held out which was great cause it was pouring right before we got there. The drink girl could come around more often, I had an earlier tee time but it wasn’t until hole 9 that I even saw her, by then we lost pace of play so I didn’t want to hold it up anymore but it was holiday week so I understand. Some greens were temporarily changes to shorter holes so those played funny and the distance tracker in cart was off.

Four temporary greens in play. Course in good shape. Greens were not in the best condition, slow and shaggy. The cost was discounted due to having four temporary greens. Marshall had complimentary water which was much appreciated. I enjoy playing this course when visiting Hilton Head.

Beautiful round

My favorite course around HHI. Great links style layout with the right amount of challenge. Staff was very friendly and pace of play was good. A must for a HHI golf trip. And don’t forget to try out the 19th hole island green challenge!

Green were torn up.

There were temporary greens set up in the fairway short of the real greens. I was told give yourself a two putt on these. I would like to play again if they can save the greens. Fairways were in decent shape.

Greens are recuperating from a slow transition to summer grass. We do hope you get to play in the fall, winter or spring when this is not an issue.
