Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.

Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.

The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.

Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Great Views. Fun Course

I first played this course a week ago. It was nearly empty. More people this time, but still spread out. I think we were the last group at 1:00.

The design is great. Plenty of natural traps like brush and rocks. Fairways are large, but dotted with traps. They do have some ground under repair as they reposition traps. Fairways are excellent for early season. Green speed seemed to vary a bit.

Wind is one of the big hazards. On both plays the win was high, but this round was the windiest of my life. I bet they were over 30 knots.

Great value. I'd like to see them get more play. Right now daily food service is minimal. On the first round the only lunch offering was a microwaved hot dog. This time, I ate first. The bar was not attended when I made the turn, but the guy in the pro shop came over to pour a Coke for me.

Fun time. Played better the second time with a little course knowledge.

back in business

Played course first time since new ownership. Fairways in good shape, bunkers actually have sand and well maintained. Greens slow, ready to be mowed soon to normal speed. Well worth the money! Will be back many times this summer.

fantastic greens

we played this course on the last day before they closed it for the season.Fairways & greens were in excellent condition.
There were 30 guys teeing off in 7 groups before us so we asked if we could play the back nine first. We were able to start at # 10 hole & played it in 2 hours . Then we went to # 1 hole & nobody on the course,so we played it in 2 hours. The front nine had lots of water so it slowed us down.I liked the sloping fairways& huge greens. You had to plan where wanted to land the ball.
When we drove away, there were some of the 30 guys still on the 16th hole,so we were glad we didn't follow them./

Good course for the money

We played it on a Friday afternoon and it was packed, probably because the green fees were very reasonable. Our round took over 5 hours and it looks like the course had some recent work, but overall it was in good shape. I would imagine this course is fantastic when it's not being prepped for winter as it presents some unique challenges with several holes winding through a wetland area and many holes on the back 9 on the side of a hill. Overall, a challenging course with fair hole setups and tons of bunkers. Range, practice facilities and clubhouse are excellent and what you would expect from a top notch club.

lovely greens

Play took forever because too many players were allowed in an earlier group. Greens and fairways are among the best maintained that I have seen. Course is fairly easy except for 2 or 3 holes on the back nine that have way too many bunkers around the green.

We had to wait sometimes 20 minutes on the tee box.

Our tee time was 1:10, but we were told that a tournament was going to start before us, so our start time was not until 1:20. They also put another two some in front of us who were not part of the tournament, so our tee time was put off until 1:30. I felt that we were treated very rudely.

I thought it was a great course

I thought this was a great course. Very scenic. Set up against the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Even though it was Labor Day weekend it felt as if we had the course to ourselves. The discount price I got through Golfnow was great but I don't think I would pay what they normally would charge.

Nice easy course but not service is not good

Club sold 1:50pm tee time. When we finished our play in 4 hours club house was long closed. No service! Wide open fairways, tougher greens, easy course, fair conditions, no maintenance issues.

Don't plan on eating between front and back nine.

The snack bar was a little negative experience. It seemed that the cooked was a little perturbed because someone actually wanted to order a hot dog which would require him to make one. The rest of the group decided not to get anything and walked out. Other than that we had a great time and lost a lot of balls. This is not a very forgiving course. You hit it out-of-bounds and say good bye to that ball.

Links Style Course Great Views

1st time to play here and I was quite impressed with the condition of the course and the beauty of the area along the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada's. Very nIce clubhouse, bar, pro shop! Can't wait to come back and play again. Quite windy but the course design seems to taken that into account.

Great Course

We had the opportunity to play this course for the first time this past weekend. It was not busy as the weather was very warm. The staff was amazing and the course well maintained. Only wish I had a better game, but I can't blame the course for that.
