Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Genoa Lakes Golf Course Photo submitted by Tobin9907509 on 09/28/2013
Right off # 1 behind a 7-some - Starter did nothing
Waiting on # 1 for group in front and observed a 7-some in front of them. Pointed this out to the starter and he made no move to fix issue (like put us out on 10 instead). Beverage cart person came along and apparently 6-somes, 7-somes, to 12-somes are the norm on this course.
She did say something to the pro shop and two fella's came out and did break the group apart but we are now on hole 7 and the group that was in between us is gone and now were up against this group. The personnel were friendly and trying to be accommodating. We understand when you have groups and get together's like this but normally you plan the play around it. Not put people out in the middle of it. The course itself was in good condition and the staff was friendly. Price might be a bit higher for the course in the middle of no where so we will not play here again. Paid the extra hoping for a nice outing and instead it was wait wait wait with no rhythm to try and put together a round.
Great course! Loved the layout! Near perfect condition
Had a great time playing the Ranch course. Wonderful layout. Great value. The front nine is flat while the back works up and then back down a mountain. Like the difference in lengths with the par 4's. Made you use all clubs in your bag.
I found the greens to be the most difficult part of course. Not that long so there's plenty of chances to score if your putter is on. The only thing I couldn't give 5 stars to is condition. Simply because of sand. Rock hard/wet due to sprinklers. Near unplayable.
Don't let that stop you from playing. Perfect condition besides that. Can't wait to play again.
This course in great condition
Love the Genoa Lakes Ranch course! Beautiful views, lots of elevated tee boxes, fairways like velvet! Surprised it wasn't busier-we started at 10 am and finished shortly after 2 - played as a twosome. Staff very friendly, accommodating, and attentive. We will be back!
Super location and staff
Hadn't played this course in over 10 years. Glad they revived it. I caught it on a day with little wind which made it much less challenging than it can be.
Looking forward to playing again.
Good Course. No Risk Here
The course was in great shape the pace of play was not too bad The best part was the cart girl she was awesome her service was exceptional!
work on buckers
i was in your area visiting my brother who lives in gardnerville. my only concern was the conditions of the bunkers. most were filled with water and the ones that weren't needed sand in them. fill your bunkers with sand and direct the water away from them when watering the course. we still had a great time on your beautiful course. thank you
Fun high desert course
Staff was great. First time playing this course. The starter explained some basic tips on the course, and green speeds. Pace of play was great. A cart ride is worth it, especially on the back nine which probably climbs up and then down 1000 feet of elevation.
Challenging but forgiving
Excellent course for the price, greens are in great shape and fairways are well developed. Keep your ball in the fairways or you will have a heck of a time finding in the rough.
Fun contour golf
For the price, Genoa Ranch is a steal.
This is a fun golf course. It's got some links characteristics with a few kick-points and sideboards in the fairways near greens, which you should use to bounce the ball toward the right location.
The front nine is mostly flat with water lurking in spots. The back nine climbs to higher elevations across the road, providing a few nice views. Management - which also runs Genoa Lakes - has done a great job improving course conditions and hiring a friendly staff. Hopefully, the course's troubled history - when it closed for nearly a year several years ago - is a thing of the past. This is a course that deserves a second chance.
Genoa Ranch Course
Course is in excellent condition.
Greens were rather slow but true.
Employees are extremely friendly and helpful.
Awesome
I can't believe this coarse doesn't get more play than it does. The coarse is in great shape and the staff is so friendly and accommodating it's a pleasure just to be there let alone play there. If you haven't played there your missing out. I wouldn't recommend walking this coarse like I did, the back nine is a bit challenging, but I was warned. Great Job folks you guys are Awesome!
Nice
Great golfing pro outside he went out of his way to help us get food and a little help with the driver also great guy thanks
Very windy course.
Even though the wind was blowing about 30 to 45 mph I still had a good time. Very hard conditions due to the wind. The course is in great shape. The greens were pretty hard and fast. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It snowed a little while i was on the back 9. I did have a fun round but I wouldn't go out of my way to play here again just because of the wind which the locals say it is usually blowing.
Beautiful course
Awesome day, awesome golf, pin placements very difficult.
Great course and the views are wonderful
Very nice course and playable for everyone with the 5 tee boxes. The course was in excellent condition and the views were fantastic. The only negative was the snack bar and eating facilities. We played at a time during their building transition when services were nonexistent. The facilities could be great or terrible but I could not evaluate them.
Great course - wide fairways for most holes
I liked this course better for my abilities than the Lakes course I played earlier in the week.
More forgiving and a lot less water hazards, but still had it's share.
Back nimen holes on the hill offer great views of the Carson Valley and should be seen.
Staff was great!
Great practice facilities.
Fine Punctuation Mark to Reunion
This was the final round of a three-day reunion of Navy shipmates, and I must say it was a great way to finish. We were the first golfers off in the morning, and the air was a bit heavy. Additionally, the greens were rather slow not just because of the dew, but because the mowers did not show up. This just required some adjustment. Since the greens were slow, the course did not play like a true links-style course, but that did not hinder our enjoyment. Most of the greens are spacious with enough well-defined bailout to navigate without much problem. However, stay away from the bunkers. Some of my buddies had some real difficulties both short sided and with plenty of green to play with. They were a bit hard, but not quite hardpan. I had no difficulty with them because I am from Arizona and that is how many of the them are at home. However, if you are used to soft sand, beware... the bounce is greater than you are likely accustomed. Judging by the scores and frustration level of the boys, I think the front nine was more difficult than the back nine. As is customary, though, much of the trouble is of one's own making. I think a little local knowledge is helpful. For visitors, I recommend aiming for the safe side of the fairway. They are pretty generous for the most part, especially on the back nine. With few exceptions, what you see is what you get. However, watch out for fairway bunkers. Since it is links-style, you do get more roll out, and tee shots will reach bunkers if you are on line with them. I did notice a number of steep drop offs behind greens. So if possible, do not fly the green with approach shots because you will be very disappointed. If you find "the desert", it is a penalty 99% of the time. Take your drop and move on. It may not be worth looking because the gorse and shrubs will tear you up. In general, I liked the Lakes Course (we played it yesterday) better than the Ranch Course. The Ranch Course was not as manicured as the Lakes Course, but perhaps this was due to the maintenance staff being absent this particular day. If I had a choice, I would play Lakes. However, Ranch is fine, and acceptable to all skill levels. The pro shop and cart staff were terrific with a great deal of enthusiasm for their jobs. That goes a long way in my book. If you are in the area for a few days, you can't go wrong playing either, or both as we did, Lakes or Ranch courses. The fees were reasonable too.
Views, Views and more Views
Was expecting a stiffer golf challenge. This course is wide open and not overly challenging. It's in better than average condition tee to green, but the greens could have been a little faster and better kept for my taste. On the back 9, take the time to stop and absorb your surroundings. Staff was great and the cocktails were even better. Great practice facility. There are cheaper places to play and more challenging tracks in the area. But, if you want to take some people out for a memorable, fun day... this is your spot.
Great day
Teed off at 0930, pace of play was just under 4 hrs. Course condition was very good and it was well worth the price.
