Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

The One to Play
Played Ranch course day after playing Lakes - Play Ranch!
The courses are 5 minutes away from each other, but a world apart. Lakes is OK, but NOT worth the fee. Ranch is a better layout with better scenery, and LESS MONEY. The Ranch back 9 is as good as it gets.
The facilities are as different as the courses, with the Lakes far superior. Both course have bag drop areas with helpful, friendly employees assisting. At Lakes, you walk upstairs to the pro-shop, then to your waiting cart, and off to the tee.
Driving range, 1st tee, and snack bar are easy to find.
The Ranch facilities are as bad as the course is good.
Good luck trying to find the pro-shop. The driving range is around the back somewhere.
And the food service is a joke:
Walk into the main building (this one? that one?)
Find the bar
Order and pay for food
Walk outside front door to cart
Drive around to back
Find outdoor grill where your order has been sent
Wonder why they don't have a system so you could order, pay, and get your food like everywhere else in the world.
Both courses load your cart with water in an iced container.
Play here - it's memorable
Plant a tree
We played this course on a very hot day with no shade, they should think about planting some trees. It was a great day of golf even if I did real bad. The staff was great,as was the course. I would recommend this course .
Disappointed
The course was not in condition to charge $50 on a hot deal. Guy in pro shop was really courteous. Pace of play was way to slow. Need a marshall and the outside services was no where to be found. Pretty pathetic!
Challenging yet forgiving
Course in immaculate condition. Wasn't busy when I played on a Wednesday. Very friendly staff and golfers. I was single but met good people to play with. Treated as if I was a member? Would definitely play again when I'm in the area.
Very friendly golf course.
The staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. Course was in great shape and was a joy to play. Tip: putts will break towards the valley. Thanks to golfnow we got a great deal on the reservation.
Fair challenge in the Sierra hills
Companion to more renounced Lakes course, this gem is a tail of two nines. Front nine in the meadows with open fairways but likely lost balls if you miss them. Back nine climbs the hill across the road with a few forced carries off the tee. Be prepared for any weather. We started in it calm sun and had rain, clouds, and Gail force winds almost the whole back nine. The only hole I didn't like was #8, a 155 yard par 3 from the blue tees with water on three sides. Fairways, tees and green in great condition. Nicely placed bunkers unfortunately bereft of playable sand.
Little bit of a drive, but Top Notch course!!
Seriously Niice course Especially Back9 , clubhouse and amenities were Top notch! Cigars, BBQ Pit, Bluetooth speakers (if your into that sorta thing) . Perfect pace , wish I played better but didn't keep balls in fairway..
One of the best values in the Tahoe/Carson area
The Ranch course is in great shape and the staff is very attentive. Unlike some other Tahoe area courses, Genoa Lakes Ranch course does not get too crowded. The practice range is one of the best around.
Course met expectations.
Heard good things about these two courses with the new owners. The course was a lot of fun with nice views along the edge of Carson valley. We played the ranch/resort course for $50 with cart at 1:00. Great value!!
Fun!
Greens a little slow and fairways ok....BUT the course design is really awesome, especially the back nine on the hills. Don't miss this course.
Friendly Staff
Everyone on staff friendly. Course is easy to play if you stay in the fairways. The rough and native areas can really boost your score. I would play again. They have an indoor practice facility and golf academy.
Wide Open
Great course in excellent condition
Cold conditions in South Lake Tahoe encouraged us to come off the mountain into the beautiful Carson Valley to play and it paid iff
Great location.
Challenging holes, long fairway and great views! Recommend this course to both beginners and advanced golfers.
had the place to ourselves
Teed off at 9am on a Saturday and had place to ourselves! This was probably because greens were recently aerated, but we knew that going in. Aside from the greens, the course condition would be a 5.
Great golf experience
The course has just about everything you could want: Interesting design, great scenery, excellent condition, and very friendly staff.
Green fees are an outstanding bargain, and include cart (with ice water in summer) and practice range.
The course itself is fair but strict - miss the fairway rough, and you'd better hit a provisional.
Looking forward to playing it again.
Genoa Lakes Ranch course
Very nice course. Scenic. Greens are fast and very challenging in speed and read.
The Ranch course was spectacular
Very impressed with the staff, clubhouse and course. Great facilities but did not eat there so can only assume food was as good as everything else. Course was very playable (no tricked up holes) and in excellent condition - not a bare spot to be found. While the course was fun to play, the view of the mountains next to the valley was simply breathtaking. This is a must play course.
12 handicapper
Tough course but lots of fun. Watch out for the snakes though!
Genoa golfing
The course was amazing! In great condition. We had an awesome time playing!
Mother's Day Golfing
We decided to golf this day since out of town for the weekend. The course was beautiful and the day was great! Since it was Mother's Day, we practically had the whole course to ourselves...what a pleasure. The staff wonderful and very accommodating.
