Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Genoa Lakes Golf Course Photo submitted by Tobin9907509 on 09/28/2013
The back nine was great! The ball had plenty of roll but it still sat somewhat on the greens. Now, the front seven to nine was very hard.
The course is a beautiful course in the valley between the mountains. The front was very hard and dry while the back was much more responsive. The ball rolled when it should have rolled, but sat where it should sit. The course was definitely worth every penny we paid. We had a great time and scored okay. If you want a much more plush and well maintained course you should pay more and play the Lakes course. Like I said, it depends on the value you are looking for.
Love this course, but it needs TLC.
I use to play this course when I lived in the area, it was one of my favorites. Last time I played it was either '04 or '05 when it was still named Sierra Nevada. Don't know why they changed the name, it is confusing to have two courses named Genoa Lakes. The course has seen better days, not maintained like it use to be. And changing and moving what use to be the back nine. Can't say that it is better or worst. I like it like it was. But it was not at all busy, only saw a couple of players the whole time.
Nice layout, good value
pace of play was slow, had to wait on 14 tee shots and many approach shots. need marshals on course to speed things up.
no water on back nine, only 1on front nine
great views but poor conditions
fairways had lots of bare spots and rarely had good lies. lots of clover in the fairways so you can lose a ball in the middle of the fairway.
Very nice course. Great value!!
My son and I played on a sun. And there was nobody there to my surprise. We enjoyed the course very much. Fast greens great fairways. And set up against the mountains. Beautiful views!! Highly recommend !!!!!
Good layout but needs maintenance.
Have played here since it was Sierra Nevada. Good layout. Difficult and challenging. Not in the condition it has been in years past.
Will play again
The course was very challenging and fun. It needs some attention especially in the trap area's they are very hard. The greens were Prestine.
Excellet course,well maintained
We preferred it to its sister course "The Lakes" that we played last week.We had terrible winds 30mph plus. We look forward to playing it again under better conditions. It is in much better shape than last year.
Very scenic
Course is still in need if attention after the winter toll.
Bare dirt and clover around the greens.
Great views, well maintained
The front nine has some standing water issues in the lower fairways, but not a big deal. The traps have compacted top soil and a chipping stroke is better to get out.
Well worth the drive.
if you are visiting the carson valley, a must play
course is in good shape for this time of year, greens are slow and will get faster as the weather gets warmer. if you have a chance, also play the genoa lakes course
Not what it used to be
The unfortunate redesign leaves the front nine lacking. The original back nine is fantastic. It would have been nice if the shop informed that the greens were punched and sanded. Speed was about a close mown fairway. No marshal or too many tee-times. Pace of play was glacial. Bar/Restaurant was closed at 4:30 when we ended our round. No 19th hole!
Ok price for off season rates.
Disappointed that 5 holes were rerouted for housing development. Original Johnny miller design was fantastic. So if you never played it before the redesign, you won't be as disappointed. Still the original holes left make it worth playing.
Outstanding layout!
Great use of the topography and landscape. This course is built on multiple elevations that presents a challenge at every hole for the mid-level player.
