San Marcos Golf Resort
About
The golf course at the San Marcos Golf Resort boasts an impressive list of past players that includes presidents and celebrities. The golf course is nestled on a property in downtown Chandler that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although it has a desert landscape, the course is still lush with a canal that runs through it, a lake, and plush Bermuda grass greens, the former two creating water hazards that come into play on several holes. The San Marcos Golf Resort course is challenging with each hole having at least three bunkers. The two most difficult holes on the golf course are two lengthy par 4s, the fourth and the 10th.

Morning view down the Par-5 5th fairway. A strong drive, especially to the center-right fairway, sets you up to go for the green in two! Photo submitted by vmustang on 04/25/2021

Nice Course
Nice course. The layout makes it a bit of a shooting gallery, but fairways are fairly wide. Course is in good condition....saw a bald eagle out there!
Excellent fairways, nice greens, but the bunkers could use some more sand in them, quite compacted.
Good Course for the Price
So never having played here before, but chose it for the price, I was pleasantly surprised. Good but small greens, slightly firm that won’t necessarily hold a shot. Some of the bunkers had very little sand over hard pan, some others were decent. Pay attention to the irrigation canal. Carry it or leave it short. Fairways and tees were in good shape, some difficult tee shots from the black tees with the placement of trees down the fairway. Would play here again.
First time here
Very flat course but nice trees make it visually interesting. Greens and fairwats good, bunkers could be better. Pace a tad slow but not unbearable. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Will definitely be back
SM 0221
Greens and sand traps were good tee boxes and fairways not so much. Very little grass on the fairways and tee boxes pretty beat up and hard to get tees in the ground.
San Marcos
Nice course with lots of long holes. Could use fairway maps at each hole as we were surprised by canals of water running through several times.
Fun Course with Challenging Greens
Course was in good condition and enjoyable to play. The greens were playing fast which was amplified by the challenging contouring. Numerous green side bunkers added to the challenge as well. The course feels a little tight in some spots but there are also some wide open fairways that encourage a golfer to go for it. This was my first visit and the staff were very helpful in getting the round started. I would definitely play again.
February 2024
Course is in good shape
Greens were good
Fairways were good
Sand traps need more sand. Some had good depth but others didn’t.
Great Place to play - BUT
I like San Marcos but slow play and sand traps make me wonder if I will come back. I am from the Midwest and a golf round is usually 3 - 4 hours. At San Marcos, it was 4 1/2. In addition, the course set-up with sand traps on both sides of all greens is diabolical - contributing to the slow play ( put some sand in the traps to give the no-pros a chance without hitting the ball across the green into the other side trap).
Horrible pace management, starter, ranger
Our morning began by having the starter push us to start early, our tee time was at 7:52am with two open holes in front of our foursome. About 40 minutes into our round in the middle of the 4th hole the ranger, Janet, approaches us and states she’s “been getting calls left and right” about our slow play. At this point we’re averaging ~10min per hole at a course with a 4 hour pace of play. We somehow became the scapegoat for the mess and bad pace management from the starter allowing golfers to tee off 2 minutes apart it seems like. We proceeded to skip the rest of the 4th hole, kept playing our pace, and on the 11th caught the group in front of us. We noticed golfers continuing to stack in the previous holes, and we now had a 2 hole gap between us the group behind us. We finished the round in 3 hours, and keeping our initial pace were later congratulated for being “rockstars”. You’re welcome for fixing your mess and bad pace management by skipping golf that we paid for.
PSA
-If you have somewhere to be don’t come play golf, go tend to your responsibilities.
-5 stars for the actual course this place is a gem, in great shape, and very forgiving. The burritos are amazing as well.
Steady as she goes!!
This is about my 5th or 6th time playing San Marcos and it never disappoints. Quality course for under $100 is rare this time of year.
Staff is very friendly from check in to the 19th hole. Course / greens in great shape. Solid option to other public courses.
Good track, needs better trash patrol
We like playing this old time course! Noticed that some fairways are starting to acquire bald spots. Could use more sand in the bunkers. There seemed to be more trash than normal so would suggest the course marshals could do trash patrol while driving around? The staff is always very nice. Would like to see some refreshing of the bathrooms, repair the cart path as needed, removal of dead plants and trees. It’s a good course overall!! People do need to fix their divots on the fairways and greens.
Fabulous Shape Right Now
SM is a fave of mine and my friends. It’s in fab shape currently (Feb 2024), pace of play just great on a Tuesday morning, food in the grill on point. We were able to get some footage for our channel (YT Two Average Golfers)—shameless plug, yes—without interrupting the pace of play and it was just a great time. We shall return!!
