Toka Sticks Golf Club
About
Unlike many other courses in Phoenix, the course at the Toka Sticks Golf Club was not done in a traditional desert-style. It is known amongst locals for having very fast greens, many of which are elevated. The old Toka Sticks course was originally a nine-hole course built in 1945 but in addition to making it an 18-hole, championship course, it has had many renovations in the years since to make it a more challenging and interesting course. There are stately trees present on the course call for straight shots in order to reach the narrow fairways. Two lakes are situated on the course that create water hazards that come into play on sever holes. There are also several well-placed sand bunkers throughout. Toka Stick Golf Club also offers a short game area, a putting green and a driving range.

It was cart path only. lumps of grass on the greens, and they were bumpy. The washrooms on the course were discussing.
What Happened…
Got there and the greeters were nice as well as the cashier. Snack bar was out of just about everything… the pace of play was horrendous! Waited 10-15 on every tee box and there was clearly a group 2 ahead slowing down the whole course, but no ranger in sight! Called the club house and no one answered. The greens were also way too tall, I understand they are back from over seeding, but the grass was established enough to not have the greens like that. For what we paid, that was not worth it and the slow pace of play took an hour+ away from my day.
Overseeding Next Day
With overseeding to begin the next day (not advertised as such), course was in poor playing condition (fairways scalped, sand traps with a mere dressing of sand,, greens exceedingly slow).. Hopefully all will improve in several weeks …. just not today.
A ok
Some false fronts are a bit weary. Not country club style but we’d play again before overseeding
Toka Sticks
Course was in good condition for this time of year but pace of play was slow.
Great
Had a great time on the course course was in between receding but still had a great time the facility is great the people are great love playing there it Toka sticks
Mature course, wiiiiiiide open fairways
I love this course! The layout is amazing! Plenty of shade trees, not too many water hazards or bunkers. If it weren't for slow players and lack of a ranger to hurry them up, it would be perfect! Really friendly staff and the course is my absolute favorite (distance from house vs. conditions vs. price).
Rough too penal
Greens were decent, though very hard. Fairways a bit shaggy. The rough, however, was very penal. “Normal” rough probably 4-5” and those (in my opinion) idiotic “deep rough islands” were knee height. All told, the group lost at least 7 balls because they happened to go into these areas.
Not worth it
Greens are in terrible shape, and the dead grass not being collected from the mower every where gets really annoying. Definitely not worth $39 for this time of year.
Mess
Horrible condition...cut grass laying on top of 6 inch rough. The greens are a mess.
Should go ahead and build houses on this land if you're not going to maintain it as a golf course.
no maintenance, water everywhere! what!!!
did not take long until you realized their maintenance was lacking. Thick un mowed rough with some fairways have large un mowed areas that was impossible to find your golf ball delaying play many times. Many greens had large water areas in front of the greens which was very unusual. We had to get ball retrievers to get balls out of small water areas directly in front of the greens. Do not play there until they get their maintenance improved.
It was iffy
Some of the course was well groomed and other parts had dead trees laying right in the middle of the course, if that’s how it has always been I’m sorry for the rating but that’s my biggest concern
Thank you for leaving a comment and rating. We should be completing our tree cleanup project at the end of this week. The recent weather hasn't been to nice to the course and we are doing our best efforts to bring it back to playing conditions. Thanks for coming out and playing at Toka Sticks GC.
Sad about condition and no notification
I’ve played Toka Sticks for years and it has always been one of my favorite course. I was so disappointed at the conditions I experienced today and even more so that they didn’t at least let us know about the conditions while still charging normal greens fees. I know there are challenges with recent weather and pandemic impacts upon obtaining proper staffing but again let the players know when course conditions are not up to standard.
Thank you for let us know about your golfing experience. The management team took your comment very seriously. To better serve our guests, the team designed a specific web page dedicated to letting players know the current course conditions and maintenance schedule on our website. We also have the same information posted in the Golf Shop and the entire Golf Shop team has been properly trained in giving the proper information to our guests. We hope this accurate information is assessable to all. Thank you for coming out and playing at Toka Sticks GC and we hope to see you back in the future.
We appreciate you expressing your concerns with us. Standing water on the course has been an issue this month due to recent rains and over saturation of the course. You may see our current course condition rating on our website before booking your next tee time or call the golf shop for an accurate updated information. Thanks for coming out and playing Toka Sticks. We will send your comment to the maintenance team.
