Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Maderas
This course is extremely challenging because of the layout and the low quality of field conditions.
For the price it is not worth it to me. Much better places with better field conditions for the same price.
Great Course - No Marshall to keep up pace of play
Front group was taking forever. Group behind us hit into us twice (the second one on purpose and landed a yard from where we were) likely thinking we were the ones holding up play. Did not see a Marshall once. Ruined a good day out on the course as it turned what should have been a fun day out into one that was on the verge of resulting in an altercation. Lots of money to pay for a round like that.
Great course
We had wonderful day of golf with out of town friends. Friendly staff from a bag drop to pro shop. Course in great shap as usual. Slow pace due to frost delay but one. Of best course to play SD area.
What a Gem!
Beautiful course, challenging but fair…greens rolled true although difficult to figure out initially :)
Course was manicured unbelievably well all throughout (tee boxes, fairways, greens) for a “winter round”.
Only “issues” were temporary, bar/grill was being remodeled and the gps in our cart did not work.
Highly recommend this course, will definitely be coming back.
Was not impressed…was expecting more
I was expecting more for paying $159. Plus it was carts on path which made pace of play longer. I thought course conditions would be pristine at this rate. They did open up a number of holes once we got to the back nine. Very disappointed.
Challenging course but annoying hidden charge
Annoying hidden charge of $5 per person at check-in for "gratuities". I pay the bag drop people myself, I don't need an automatic hidden charge.
Course is challenging when hard and firm since any slightly curving shot hits the narrow fairways and runs off.
Teed off late afternoon got 18 holes in
Starter was nice enough to move me up one tee time. It's a hard course, choose your tee box wisely, even if fairways are firm.
After the round, heard someone taking a shower in locker room, if they offer it to our of town guests catching a flight (like Aviara), that would be really cool
Very Good One to Enjoy
One of the Top ones I played in Course Layout. I played Nicholas Course in Puerto Vallarta two weeks ago.and I enjoyed Madeira’s more than Vallarta Nicholas course.(over &200 USD)
And it was under $100 thru GolfNow(& GolfPass+), so l loved it.. but you need to start early to finish’ Cuz it took almost 5 hrs.
Great Views and Layout!!
Loved. Will make my way back next time visiting Southern California.
Great course but Slow Pace of Play
Arrived to learn there had been a frost delay and we would be teeing off about an hour later than planned. No biggie, weather happens. However, we barely finished 18 as there was a group of a few groups in front of us with a few children that was playing at a glacial pace. Never saw a ranger or starter out on the course to keep things. Not what I hoped for a resort style course.
The course itself is beautiful and well maintained, although some of the tee boxes need a little TLC.
Beautiful Course but a few unfair shots
I have played Maderas a couple times before with fond memories. I stretched myself a little by playing the blues as I am not a very big hitter. I found that there were a number of very tough/ kind of unfair shots. I didn't play 18 (it was dark) but the three other par 5s all had flaws (to me). Number 3 requires a really short layup to about 140 yards or a very risky long and accurate 2nd shot over the creek. #8 is extreme target off the tee and then the green is extremely exposed and hard to hit (and miss left by 10 feet and you are out of play. # 14 is 530 straight up hill. Plays about 600. The green is perched and very hard to hit (even in 3). 3 of us were left and tried to chip to a back right pin and the balls all rolled off the front into the hazard. A couple other holes that are too target or where you get into trouble too easily (5 & 16), Staff and amenities are great. Layout a challenge - play to tees a bit shorter than you can possibly reach.
One of the best I’ve ever played
Considering playing? Do yourself a favour and play Maderas. Jaw dropping views, amazing staff, beautiful conditions.
Hospitality
First time golfer at Maderas. Great staff. Friendly and efficient. Will be back when I visit Southern California.
Nolan in the pro shop is a cool guy.
Excellent experience!
One of most enjoyable rounds of golf I've had. Course was in excellent shape. Played with two knowledgeable and friendly members. Maybe most true putting surfaces I've ever played on. Would highly recommend a visit!
