Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Birthday golf gone wrong..Great course, lazy staff. Bring your own water
I played here on 7-24-19. with a 2:30 tee time. It was perfect a perfect day for golf. It was warm in the mid 90s with some cloud cover and breeze. I got out of work early on my birthday and was headed to the course for a nice round of golf. I decided to splurge and pay for a round at Maderas instead of the other local courses. Upon arrival, the bag drop boys were nowhere to be found. It wasn't until I parked and carried my bag from my car to the clubhouse, is when the boys came out of their office and put my bag on the cart. That was the first signal as to what is to come.
At check-in, I was told that there would be ice in my cart cooler and a couple of bottles of water for me as well and water jugs along the course and a cart girl. After playing a couple of holes, I found nothing but melted ice in my cooler and a single bottle of water. I was thinking no big deal there are water jugs all along the course and ill just refill as I go. Well turns out they're all EMPTY. Which surprised me as the course was wide open. At this point I'm irritated, there no water and I didn't bring any as I expected that there would be some along the course. Now I'm praying that the cart girl is making her rounds around. Well, you thought wrong... She is nowhere to be found and did not make an appearance one during the entire 18 holes of golf. Very disappointed in the management.
The only positive that I have is the conditions of the course. It was nice and well maintained.
Punishing
Not fun for the casual or mid-high handicap golfer. Punishing for any shot that isn’t hit on the fairway. As you can imagine it is tough to pay a lot of money and go out in the Poway desert heat and lose all your golf balls in the brush. It is a high end course with regards to staff, upkeep, and amenities.
A true 5 star experience
This is our second time playing the course. A little comprehension as the first time expert 5 years ago was very good. Well the second time was even better. From the time we drop tiff the clubs to iced towel upon the finish. Very enjoyable experience.
The course is full of ups and downs. The forward tees are generously placed for high handicappers.
AWESOME !!!
First of all the staff are friendly and welcoming. The course and greens were in excellent shape. I’m looking forward to my next golf outing here. Thank You Madeira’s G.C.
Great course and very friendly staff
This is a must play if you are in the area. The staff was very friendly and did their best to make sure guests enjoyed their day. Pace was a bit slow but it was a bit of bad luck based on when I went out. The marshall was very active and friendly trying to keep things moving along. I would definitely play again.
Pace Of Play Terrible
Pace of play was terrible. Didn’t see a Marshall until the 16th hole and all he did was offer up excuses. Three groups waiting on 15-18th holes.
Why allow a slow group to crap on everyone else’s round? Grow a pair and deal with the slow groups.
Can’t recommend a course that allows slow play!
Nice but missing something
Cart got stuck on a hole but there were no signs so my cart just said restricted area and I was stuck. Fun day not sure yet if it is worth the price though.
Fantastic
Beautiful courses in great shape. My new favorite course in San Diego area
Wonderful, yet playable, course
All aspects of the course were excellent, for players of all levels.
Country Club For A Day
Most likely the best public golf course in the greater San Diego area. I prefer this course to Aviara at a much better price. Steele Canyon is excellent, but Maderas is just better. The conditions are consistently excellent. I have been playing during the week for $60 - $70 between 2pm - 3pm on Golfnow. The long hours of late spring allow plenty of time to finish. The design of the course and the beautiful surroundings are not to be missed. A Great deal at this price.
It’s Maderas
Never anything short of a 5star day at Maderas. Great course, 1 thru 18. Worth every penny!!
Beautiful and Challenging
Always a wonderful experience out at Maderas, even if my scores don’t reflect it. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Practice facilities are well kept and give a good indication of what you’ll be in store for. A bit pricey for my weekly outing, but perfect for a once a month treat.
Great course
First time playing here. Course was challenging. In outstanding condition. One of the best courses I've played in a long time. Highly recommend playing this course!!
Was my first time playing in San Diego and had a really enjoyable time on the course.
Course was in great condition and thought layout was challenging without being too over punishing.
Definitely one of the best courses in San Diego
The course is in immaculate condition fairways were beautiful greens were great tee boxes were flat and there was sand in the sand traps. The course layout is phenomenal and the pace of play was also phenomenal I will definitely be going back real soon and the staff is very very friendly and helpful
Fantastic operation and layout
When I settled on San Diego for my buddies trip, I knew I'd be calling up Maderas for one of the rounds. In my travels, it is among the best standalone daily-fee destination facilities I've experienced. Great clubhouse, food, drinks, practice area and service.
Oh, the layout is a lot of fun too, culminating with a great closing stretch full of elevated tee shots and high drama. Conditions are fast and great and you can employ the ground game a little bit around the greens.
I was curious if my group of 12 would prefer Torrey Pines North or Maderas. Virtually all of them seem to have preferred Maderas even if Torrey was a little more forgiving to wayward shots (and is more walker-friendly, which I personally prefer).
Stunning course in the hills
A 50 minute drive north from San Diego, Maderas greets you with a stunning club house and hilly views. Nothing is out of place.
The course was no let down after this introduction.
The first is a clever par four with a creek that prevents one bombing the ball with a driver. The second hole is straight up hill. A slope behind the back pin acts as a nice backdrop for approaches. Make sure you take a look behind you at the view of the valley.
The course keeps on winding up and down. The third is now straight down hill with a wide fairway. Lay up or try to make the green in 2 carefully, as there is a creek at around 80 yards.
The fourth was probably my favourite hole. A tight looking par three, with a ditch in front and bunkers back.
The greens are all magnificently true and devilishly quick. It takes quite some adjustment if you are not used to quick greens. I three putted several times simply due to misjudging the pace of the ball. The fairways are in prime condition and you will be unlikely to find a bad lie. The course is quite tight so you will need to be accurate off the tee. If you miss the fairway it can be quite penal. There are also many altitude changes so you will need to come prepared to Over club/under club depending on whether you are up hill or down hill. This is best exemplified by the downhill par 3 17th where you can barely see 1/2 of the green from the tee box.
Staff are nice and there is a lemonade stand and cold towels awaiting your arrival back from 18. Would love to play there again.
