Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Best course in San Diego
Troon’s only course in San Diego and they know what they’re doing when it comes to course management and hospitality. The course layout is challenging but fair and the greens and fairways are pristine in condition. The pace of pay is usually quick; I’ve played there multiple times and all but once was sub 4.5 hours expect once. But above all else, their staff make the experience of Maderas. 10/10.
Nice golf course
I enjoyed the round of golf. My two disappointments were the temp in the club house (appearantly the people with the keys to the thermostats were out and the beer girl was absent the back nine.
Great course but pick the right set of tees
We played as a 3some on Tuesday, 18 December. Weather was perfect and overall it was a fun experience. The fairways and greens were in absolutely perfect condition. But, it was our first time playing and in hindsight, should not have gone from the blues. Whites/Greens would have been better. Course has several holes that require carries over ravines/gorges. Several holes have blind tee shots. But the most challenging aspects were the greens. You have to know where to land the ball on the green if you want any chance to get a par. On several holes, a bogey would have been a great score. Some of the greens were angled pretty steeply to begin with. Add some "interesting" pin placements and you are looking at 3 putts minimum. We hit a few greens only to see the ball roll back 20 yards. The greens themselves were absolutely stunning; any pro would have been impressed. We played this course using a great deal from GolfAdvisor. Great conditions and unbeatable hospitality. But, be warned, if you are playing for the first time, move up 2 sets of tees.
Good time... good course
4-1/2 hour round on a weekend is always welcome. Course is in good shape. Greens are fast. The rains several weeks ago messed up my home course
( Balboa) , so I took advantage of a golf now special and was glad that I did. Almost forgot how nice these premium courses are fun to play on. Oh yes, the personnel at Maderas is always courteous and helpful..
Highly recommend this course.
5 star operation&course
Probably my favorite course in the United States ..perfect weather perfect conditions
Every hole is a postcard challenging but very fair pick the right Tee Box
Maderas
Wonderful course. Excellent customer service. Will definitely play again and recommend to others.
Outstanding golf course
This is one golf course you have to play if you're in the San Diego area .The staff are very friendly and helpful.from the time you park the car till the time you leave you are treated outstanding .
3 players in my group and less than 3 hours
For winter season starting, the course was in excellent shape. The greens were running fast and smooth. We probably had more roll on the fairway due to winter conditions but not bad.
I haven't played here in a while since I belong to a country club but enjoyed the challenge.
The clubhouse staff and starter were very friendly.
My friends and I decided to grab a drink and order an appetizer. That was okay. Nice people but they were not jumping to help us even though the bar was empty. The menu was limited and nachos were okay at best.
But we were at Maderas for the food.
The course was in great condition and we played a quick round. Perfect!
Fantastic layout
Really enjoyed this course. Nice starter, staff and in-house services. Course layout is beautiful as well as the view. Club house is gorgeous. Only negative is that the pace was hopelessly slow. Why was there no sheriff pushing the extremely slow players.
Great Play
Great experience overall. Staff was friendly and starter got us out on time. Course was in excellent shape overall except for a tee box or 2 that were a little beat up. Greens rolled true and on the fast side. Pace of play was average. Course is a good test of playing ability, fairways narrow and require good shot making ability. Water and forced carries come into play on a few holes. Only complaint, if you can call it that, was practice range was mats only and was pretty wet and soppy. Was able to score a deal time which made this an excellent value. Otherwise the value here is average. Would definitely play here again.
Maderas is definitely a must play
Great course with a lot of different looks. Conditions weren’t peak but still always really good. Tough for high handicappers but very challenging and fair for mid to low handicappers. Greens when not punched are fantastic. Always enjoy playing Maderas. Great practice facilities to work on game before and after. San Diego gem. One of my favorites as a San Diego resident.
San Diego County Gem
This was my first time playing Maderas and it was a great day. The course was in good shape (the greens were still in recovery from having been punched and sanded) and they didn’t roll as true as they might, but overall it’s a wonderful and challenging test of shotmaking skills. Not a bomber’s paradise by any stretch. The facility is terrific, the staff was like private country club staff, and the grill has excellent food. I had the burger, and it was superb.
Can’t wait to go back
Well worth it
I don’t normally write post round reviews but felt inclined to make an exception this time. I was traveling from AZ to San Diego and wanted to play a good course. Maderas didn’t disappoint. Not only that, I would put it as one of my favorites now in this area.
The course requires precise shots. Johnny Miller is a master at layout. The views are great and you really get a feel for the hillsides of San Diego. The holes are all very unique and fun to play. The greens were fantastic and are faster than they look. The fairways were clean and smooth. Everything was great about this place. The staff were friendly and I had no issue teeing off early and finishing in 3 hrs as a single.
Will definitely play again some time.
Phenomenal Venue
This course is 5-star across the board. The layout is incredibly well done and although it was definitely a hike I would highly encourage folks to walk this course. This course features some incredibly dramatic elevation changes and by walking this course you are able to truly appreciate how intricate yet overpowering the landscape the architects had to be.
A lot of dirt had to be moved simply to clear out enough space for this course but there course does a tremendous job of bending into the natural terrain. This is easily the best desert course I have played (which includes TPC Scottsdale and all the top PGA West Courses).
Super friendly and attentive staff, top-notch conditions and an all-around great experience. No hole even came close to resembling another and there isn't a single hole out here that wasn't architecturally interesting. If I lived in SoCal I would become a member here and never play another course.
Very easy to see why this course was once rated in GDs Top 100 and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find 100 other public courses across the country that can compete with Maderas.
Wonderful golf course
This is the nicest course I have played in North County. Nice courses are more expensive but Maderas GC is definitely worth it!
