Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Definitely one of the best courses in San Diego
The course is in immaculate condition fairways were beautiful greens were great tee boxes were flat and there was sand in the sand traps. The course layout is phenomenal and the pace of play was also phenomenal I will definitely be going back real soon and the staff is very very friendly and helpful
Fantastic operation and layout
When I settled on San Diego for my buddies trip, I knew I'd be calling up Maderas for one of the rounds. In my travels, it is among the best standalone daily-fee destination facilities I've experienced. Great clubhouse, food, drinks, practice area and service.
Oh, the layout is a lot of fun too, culminating with a great closing stretch full of elevated tee shots and high drama. Conditions are fast and great and you can employ the ground game a little bit around the greens.
I was curious if my group of 12 would prefer Torrey Pines North or Maderas. Virtually all of them seem to have preferred Maderas even if Torrey was a little more forgiving to wayward shots (and is more walker-friendly, which I personally prefer).
Stunning course in the hills
A 50 minute drive north from San Diego, Maderas greets you with a stunning club house and hilly views. Nothing is out of place.
The course was no let down after this introduction.
The first is a clever par four with a creek that prevents one bombing the ball with a driver. The second hole is straight up hill. A slope behind the back pin acts as a nice backdrop for approaches. Make sure you take a look behind you at the view of the valley.
The course keeps on winding up and down. The third is now straight down hill with a wide fairway. Lay up or try to make the green in 2 carefully, as there is a creek at around 80 yards.
The fourth was probably my favourite hole. A tight looking par three, with a ditch in front and bunkers back.
The greens are all magnificently true and devilishly quick. It takes quite some adjustment if you are not used to quick greens. I three putted several times simply due to misjudging the pace of the ball. The fairways are in prime condition and you will be unlikely to find a bad lie. The course is quite tight so you will need to be accurate off the tee. If you miss the fairway it can be quite penal. There are also many altitude changes so you will need to come prepared to Over club/under club depending on whether you are up hill or down hill. This is best exemplified by the downhill par 3 17th where you can barely see 1/2 of the green from the tee box.
Staff are nice and there is a lemonade stand and cold towels awaiting your arrival back from 18. Would love to play there again.
Best Course n San Diego
Maderas is consistently the best public course in the San Diego area.
Fast Greens
Played on 5/12. Course is in great shape. Greens are really quick and mostly roll fairly true. Pace pretty good. Went out as a 2. One group let us play thru and the pace was awesome. Had to wait on the last 3 holes which was a bummer but overall great day.
Simply an excellent golf course!
This course is always in superb condition, The design of the course is terrific, as are all of the amenities. The staff are professional and courteous. Tis is as good as it gets, period!
Five Stars Across the Board!!! Fantastic Course!!!
Maderas is one of the nicest courses in Southern California. I drove about 80 miles to get there and easily would’ve driven twice that far for the all around quality at Maderas. Everything about our round was great. Everyone from the bag drop guy, pro shop guy to the starter and cart girl were very friendly and helpful. Pace of play was great. We never had to wait over a shot, nor did we have anyone pushing us from behind throughout our entire round. Course was in immaculate condition and very well marked. Some GPS systems on carts seem to be more accurate than others. The GPS at Maderas is very accurate and helpful from tee thru green. I have zero complaints about this course and I would highly recommend Maderas.
Bring your A game
This is probably the hardest course I have ever played. However, It's so fast and dry that you might actually be rewarded for a bad shot that bounces out of the rough and onto the.fairway. Four stars only because of recent aerifiication. Arrive early so you can take advantage of the phenomenal practice facility. It's the best I've ever seen including the one at Sawgrass.
Favorite course
Can’t wait to play here again! What a beautiful well taken care of course!
Great course, great day
Got a great deal due the greens being punched. That did little to spoil this great course. This course is just AWESOME! I’d play here everyday if I could. The best it gets in SD County.
always good
Got a good rate due to recent aerification. Otherwise the course was in it's usual excellent condition. This course can be difficult for mid and
high handicappers. if you aren't hitting it straight bring extra balls.
Great value even with aerated greens
My group showed up knowing that the greens had recently been aerated. The greens still rolled great and this course is a great value at the discounted rate when they aerate the greens. I would play this course again in a heartbeat
Beautiful AND difficult
Course was in fabulous condition, personnel were great, TONS of undulation on fairways and greens....a couple of holes were borderline absurd! (Be sure to bring extra balls!) Still greatly enjoyed the round and would play it again.
A challenging course
This course is top notch in service and conditions. Playability-wise, it is for players who think their way through a round and play strategically. You must.
The back is tougher than the front. Be aware of the sloping fairways.
Awesome
Great greens, good fairways . Played 2 some in less than 3 hrs. Challenging course for sure but loved it worth the $$
A great day of golf
Great Track, Great people! The starter Doc just a great ambassador for MADERAS.
