Golf Advisor: Top Military Courses in the U.S. (2021 #5)
Reviews
Pace of Play
The pace of play was absolutely horrendous! Started just be 10am and completed the 8th hole at 1pm. The marshals were busy on the south course and no one noticed the problem until there were as many as five (5) groups on a hole. We abandoned the round before the ninth. The next time we play, I will probably book a tee time after 12:30pm.
Admiral Baker North
Course is in prime time condition!! Amazing pace of play! We actually played the first 3 holes in 17 minutes ( yes I said 17)!! Total round was played in 3 hours 10 minutes. Greens are awesome! Fairways are picture perfect!
We Love Admiral Baker North
Course is a gem in great shape. Refreshing pace of play!
Wow
What a great course the condition was immaculate and I will definitely return to Admiral Baker
Admiral-North
Played the Blues (6780/72.6/128) with Weber2323 and 2 nice locals in around 4.5 hours midday. $42 to walk for non military was a little steep, but probably in the ballpark for the San Diego area on the weekend. Completely overcast, calm to a little breezy and a little muggy with temps around 70.
Before we get into the course review, huge shout out to Mike Webb for his performance today. Mike accomplished something I suspect few GKers ever have... he got it to -5 after 10 holes. Even with a few hiccups down the stretch, he still ended up on the low side of par. Excellent round Mike!
Overall, the course was in good condition, very playable.
The tees were very nice, mostly lush with few unfixed divots.
Most of the fairways were lush and in the 7/10 range. However, 3-4 fairways had significant amounts of hard pan and were more in the 4/10 range.
The rough was not overly long and had good coverage. I usually was able to advance at least a middle iron a decent distance.
The sand looked better than it played. Well maintained. However, the 2 traps I was in both could have used more sand.
The Poa Annua greens were the hi-light of the course. Firm, medium to medium fast speed and held approach shots well. Only a few had tiers, but there were few straight putts on any of them today.
The customer service from the pro shop to the ever present drink cart was very good. Player Assistant making the rounds offering water and monitoring POP. Even though it was a 4 1/2 hour round, we moved at a decent pace and were rarely held up.
My 1st time playing here, I enjoyed the course. Parkland style layout with mostly generous fairway widths. Nice collection of par 3's, liked the variety of par 4/5 holes. Many fairly straight holes with a few doglegs. No holes that jumped out as great golf holes, but no bad holes either. Nice course to walk, fairly flat with most tees close to the last green. Good course for players of all skill levels, not many forced carries but enough length from the tips to keep you honest. Recommended=yes.
Wonderful Course!
Wide fairways, interesting holes, excellent conditions made for a really enjoyable round of golf. I will play here again.
Challenging but fair.
Admiral Baker is a gem and a pleasure to play for the price. It is well maintained and always runs on a tight schedule. The greens seemed that they had been punched and will improve in the next couple of weeks. This course has become a staple for our group and looking forward to our next visit.
WELL MAINTAINED COURSE
WELL MAINTAINED COURSE ,NORTH COURSE IS HARDER AND THE SOUTH COURSE HAS BETTER GREENS FOR ME.
HAS AMBASSADOR WITH WATER,CART GIRL AND FOOD AT THE TURNS.
CAN BE VERY WINDY AT TIMES BUT THAT MAKES IT FUN.
Becoming a favorite
Baker North is easily becoming one of my favorite tracks in San Diego. Front 9 are good scoring holes, the back is where you need to be patient and choose shots wisely. The greens a not as receiving as if like them to be but role pretty true.
Admiral Baker North
Played last Sunday. Easy to make tee time, quick check in at pro shop and teeing off with a cart 10 minutes after arriving; awesome.
Played Blue tees and tee boxes were ok.
Fairways were a little spotty; rough was typical municipal course of whatever happens to grow with irrigation. Greens were on the faster side; but, Bermuda bumpy and had to really read the grain on most putts.
Layout and elevations were varied and enjoyable. It was a very hot day and we never saw a drink cart, there were a couple of drinking fountains and halfway house at the ninth hole as it is not located near the clubhouse.
Overall a good experience at a reasonable price and will def play again.
Admiral baker
I had a 6:54 tee time. However, we did not tee off until 7:07. Getting off the tee late was the only Negative thing about my experience. We finished the round in 3 hours 45 minutes. The course is in really good condition. There are some spots that are bare on the fairways. The greens and bunkers were awesome. The bunkers were well maintain and were very playable. The staff were extremely friendly. It was a great experience.
What a Value!
My wife and I are from Upstate NY and we visit SoCal for a few months in the winter. Have played most of the San Diego area courses. Admiral Baker North is one of the best values we found. The combination of condition, layout, pace of play, availability and price is hard to beat.
Golfnow.com
I enjoyed this course & only play when I have a military friend to sponsor me for the great deals. I was very happy when I saw this course on the golf now.com site for great deals, but it's a shame that it only allow 2 to 4 players for the discount.
Well I always go by myself and hook up with people on the course. I don't want to pay for 2 people and am the only one playing!!
Great Value!
We played the North Course. I have played the South course previously. The North Course is more challenging than the South Course. It was a very very windy day, and rather cool for San Diego. The course is nestled in the hills therefore the wind is following the hills and the directions change as you go from hole to hole. The course is a different kind of grass than what I am accustomed, and it took a bit of time to get adjusted to the speed and reading the greens. I ended with 31 putts, so it wasn't terrible.
I think for the value, and the convenient location this is one of the best deals in the area. Also since it is a US Navy operated course, there is no sales tax on anything purchased in the Pro Shop, and the prices of what is being sold in the Pro Shop are good as well.
I highly recommend Admiral Baker.
Dont play the south course!!
Great elevation changes, you will use all your clubs!!! Challenging dog legs!! Cant find another course like this in san dieog for this kind of money!!
Great bang for buck
Good alternative to Riverwalk, Balboa and Coronado for a central SD 18 course. Only played the North course because it has a longer and more scenic layout. Can't beat the price. Weekday afternoons always seem empty. You can almost get in 9 holes after 4pm during winter months! As with many courses, weekends can get slow. Only drawback is that golfnow only allows booking per two players.
Note: there is a free sand trap and chipping area to practice!
Always a good time at this course.
Good course and the amenities and staff are awesome.
First time
This is a very good golf course. The early holes are flat and open, the middle holes go up and around a hill and part of the back nine works around a pretty good sized lake. The clubhouse is first rate and the prices are good. We had a very enjoyable day.
Wasn't aware of this course, it's awesome!
Nice course layout, challenging greens, got to pay attention to all the subtle breaks, and where they're coming from.
