Mountain View at Desert Willow Golf Resort
About
The second of two Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designs at Desert Willow resort in Cathedral City, Mountain View is a little shorter (6,913 yards) and boasts wider fairways than the Firecliff Course.
There are also half as many bunkers as at Firecliff. Which still means there are 98 here.
Still, water comes into play more on Mountain View. The course name is no misnomer either. Golfers actually do get great views of the Santa Rosa Mountains as they take on Hurdzan's desert landscaping. This is resort golf with real nature touches.

Great Public Gem
This is a great place to play when in Palm Springs/Palm Desert area. Very friendly staff. Nice practice facility. Golf academy on property. Well maintained. Advance reservations highly recommended. The greens can be tricky as many are convex in shape. Layout is beautiful.
The sister course Firecliff is also well worth playing.
Mountain View plays through Westin Desert Willow Resort
and one can easily walk from the resort, or have staff give you cart ride. Also a beautiful place to stay/visit.
Hidden Gem
Mountain View at Desert Willow might get overlooked because it is a city owned public golf course- but any ideas about ‘MUNIS” go out the window here. From the minute you pull up and are greeted by one of the super friendly valet guys, they grab your bags and get you squared away in minutes. The pro shop is well stocked and the restaurants are fantastic.
The course has all you want no matter what tees you play and I have played them all. It is always in great shape in season and in the summer. There are always marshals and I have never had a round even in the busiest of times that took over 4 hours. Great risk reward holes and the greens are always well taken care of. Don’t write either course off at Desert Willow Firecliff with all its bunkers and Mountain View are always a great time.
Not great
Horrible course conditions on the Mountain Course and completely torn up. It took until the 11 to hole for a never gave cart to get to us. What a bummer.
not good value for the money
we played at fire cliff before very good condition. we thought would be the same at the mountain but it is not.the second hole partial green was no grass.
Played behind “guy’s trip”
Liked the course layout. Course was pretty chewed up though. Greens really brown and beat up. Expected better. Played behind a couple of groups which were clearly some sort of a guys trip given the ridiculous matching clothes they were wearing. Unfortunately they showed zero respect for anyone playing behind them. Group after group after group behind us quit. We were on over a 5 hour pace and we finally gave up at #17. Course Marshall showed up for the first time on hole 15. Stage was very courteous and polite in spite of everything. Great food and restaurant. Amenities were top shelf.
Desert Golf
Played Desert Willow for the first time and enjoyed the course. The good; nice course layout, wide fairways and the right mix of bunkers and water hazards and slope. Friendly staff.
The bad; overbooked tee times and too many late arrivals that pushed back tee times and jammed up the pace of play with 2-3 groups waiting on some holes. This is frustrating when it's 95 degrees and you're waiting on every hole.
My two cents, would play again but I expect better tee time management.
Great conditions
Mountain View was in great shape. Love always playing at Desert Willow. Highly recommend the facility.
DW Mountain View
Rode the Purple tees (6507/71.2/128) in slightly less than 3H as a single on a GN Hot Deal mid day. The weather was sunny, breezy and around 110.
The Bermuda tees were mostly lush but almost all had bare spots mixed in. Level with few divots.
The Bermuda fairways are mostly lush and firm with some bare spots.
Same for the Bermuda rough, which is mowed low and not overly penal.
The sand traps were decently maintained with good quality sand. However, both greenside traps I sampled were thinner than you would prefer.
The Bermuda greens were poor. Most have bare areas and they pitted slow and bumpy. Best attribute was that they held irons well.
Excellent customer service on every visit here. Nice GPS on the carts. Plenty of ice/water stations on the course. No drink cart out in the summer. Nice all grass driving range with a good chipping area & practice green. Course is in really mediocre shape for this course. Usually much better, especially the greens. Would only play on a severely discounted green fee.
Underwhelmed
I expected more from this course based on some of the reviews. The course had no signature holes to say WOW! We played Indian Wells the day before and thought this would be at the same level. Unfortunately it was not. Save your money and for the same price play Indian Wells. You will be glad you did.
Not full disclosure
The greens were horrible. Obviously they were sanded and punched recently but I would have gone to a different course if it was disclosed. Don’t get me wrong I fully expect courses to keep up their facilities but failing to disclose the conditions truthfully and charging full seasonal rack rate is akin to stealing. Just not a good experience and was disappointing.
Slow play. Greens in very bad shape
Overall a great course. But very slow play. Greens were worst I have ever seen
Perfect
I was a single and was paired up with an amazing group of people. It's always a crap shoot on who you're gonna get in your group. I think the golf gods were smiling on me. The staff were very polite and helpful. The course was full of rolling hills and more traps than I could count, but I love a good challenge. I did however have a poor golf day and made plenty of ball contributions to the course. But the atmosphere and company made it well worth it.
Nice course
Good resort course in good conditions in spite of the heat (around 110 degrees)
