John Fought and Tom Lehman collaborated on the course at Verrado Golf Club, a voluptuous design that meanders through the old Caterpillar bulldozer proving grounds. It's up and down for 18 holes and that doesn't mean "chip and a putt." The course is good test with chances to score and a handful of memorable and scenic holes.

Where Verrado Golf Course will eat you alive is in the bunkers. Some bunkers are hard to carry, others collect wayward shots. But the fairways are wide enough to avoid trouble, and what appears to be the safe shot off the tee will often bring greenside bunkers more into play. So pick your poison.

While the back nine is far superior to the front, going out still has its fair share of memorable holes. A huge boulder 30 feet tall on the par-4 eighth jets out from the left side around which the fairway shapes itself. A perfect line from the tee box is to take the ball five yards right off its edge, but hitting the boulder is certain death by desert. The boulder was scheduled to crumble via dynamite, but stood up to the TNT and was deemed an immoveable object. Open and playable for all skill levels, the Verrado Golf Club is a sublime experience.

Don’t let first 4 holes scare you

Great course. First 3 or 4 holes a bit intimidating for newbies to desert golf, but then fairways widen and course is very playable. Tough holes for sure but not brutal. Best track we played on our 5 course golf trip. Just kind of a trek out there from Phoenix, but pricing rewards you for time spent to get there. Great amenities, pace, layout, greens. No complaints

one of west phoenix best

the only reason i gave this a 4 star was because the staff needs a happy class. great course! we had a 4-some with a guest who doesn't golf but was down here for first time and wanted to enjoy the views. we were fully prepared to pay a "cart fee" and asked before starting, but no mention was made. as we were preparing to hit our approach shot on hole #1, a cart comes racing out to interrupt us for fear we were seemingly trying to get away without paying a cart fee?? we spent over $550 in greens fees, $100 on the course for beverages & tips plus another $360 at the restaurant and they were worried about $20? sorry, but you had everything right, except the "people part" we may return... if quintero or estrella are booked

Fantastic course

What a wonderful layout and the condition of the course was very good. The tee boxes were pretty beat up but the rest of the course was outstanding! Played the front nine in 1:55 then HIT A WALL!!! 2:35 back nine was ridiculously slow. When I asked the marshall on the 11th hole what the deal was he said "you're right on time". I explained to him the last two holes had taken almost 40 minutes to play he told me he found that "difficult to believe." Seriously?? Do your job and listen to your clients. I have never had a bad experience here before (6 rounds previously) so I'll write the interaction with the Marshall off as a anomaly.
