Verrado Golf Club - Founders Course
About
John Fought and Tom Lehman collaborated on the course at Verrado Golf Club, a voluptuous design that meanders through the old Caterpillar bulldozer proving grounds. It's up and down for 18 holes and that doesn't mean "chip and a putt." The course is good test with chances to score and a handful of memorable and scenic holes.
Where Verrado Golf Course will eat you alive is in the bunkers. Some bunkers are hard to carry, others collect wayward shots. But the fairways are wide enough to avoid trouble, and what appears to be the safe shot off the tee will often bring greenside bunkers more into play. So pick your poison.
While the back nine is far superior to the front, going out still has its fair share of memorable holes. A huge boulder 30 feet tall on the par-4 eighth jets out from the left side around which the fairway shapes itself. A perfect line from the tee box is to take the ball five yards right off its edge, but hitting the boulder is certain death by desert. The boulder was scheduled to crumble via dynamite, but stood up to the TNT and was deemed an immoveable object. Open and playable for all skill levels, the Verrado Golf Club is a sublime experience.

Golfer Reviews
Good summer conditions
Fairways: plush and in great shape
Greens: On the firm side, but a bit bumpy and slow
Rough: thick
Bunkers: very firm
Friendly staff with timely beverage cart and good marshal presence.
One negative that has been true for years: golf carts shut down when you get within 10-30 yards of "no carts" signs. Signs should be placed more accurately via GPS.
Nice Fought design...
Rode the Silvers (6833/71.9/130), playing 36 holes as a single in 5H. The weather was clear and hot, 116 when I finished @ 530pm.
I had planned on playing both courses, but passed on Victory after finding over that they punched their greens about 10 days ago. Founders was punched about 3 weeks ago and was 95% healed.
I like desert golf and John Fought designs, so it's not shocking that I really liked this course. Tom Lehman was a co-designer, first experience on one of his courses.
Some tight holes, but nothing too bad. Many holes have upscale homes around them, but they are far enough away that they blend in and are not noticeable. Some big traps to avoid and desert scape no mans land surrounds almost every hole.
This course featured 17 3/4 holes of good to excellent golf. Hole 13's green being the exception. Short, 291 yard par 4 from the Silvers, severely uphill.
For those of you familiar with Rustic Canyon, this green was a combination of the worst features of the greens on holes 12 & 15 @ RC. The pin was on top of a severe mound that would remind you of #12 @ Rustic Canyon, except larger. The big difference is that on #12 @ Rustic, you just roll down to a flat area if you miss the table top. This green had a front like #15 @ Rustic, where you could run a putt or chip a few feet by a pin close to the slope and end up 30 yards down the hill in the fairway. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience!
The Bermuda tees were mostly lush and well maintained. Same for the fairways.
First time in awhile I have played in Bermuda rough that was allowed to grow up. The ball usually sat down, and anything but whacking it out and trying to advance it maybe 125 yards was usually out of the question. I dropped out from a sprinkler and the ball sat down so much in about 4" tall rough I was lucky to gorilla a SW back into the fairway.
The Bermuda greens were firm and medium speed. I had a hard time with the speeds even the 2nd time through.
The customer service was excellent from everyone. Cart gal out making the rounds. All grass range with complementary balls, nice practice area. Many tees are a long ways from the last green, so even if it was not scorching, it would be a challenge to walk. Definitely recommended.
with the different set of tees
it is a challenge for any skill level. The cart girl, Marge was amazing. I look forward to playing there again. The only negative was that the GPS was not working .
Great value
Course is in excellent condition, even for a very hot summer. No bald spots anywhere, greens run true. Staff, even the ones on the course, are very friendly. $17 for a round - I could play here every day.
Nice Course
Very nice course, great value, staff was very friendly. I will play there again.
Verrado
Course was in very good condition. The greens were bumpy given recent arriation. Generous size fairways, great layout. On course cart lady came around often as did starter to make sure we had cool drinks - very hot (110 at noon when we got done).
Very nice golf course. Views are awesome. Will play again in a few weeks.
First time and enjoyed it.
This is a challenging course, and I don't think it was because it was my first time playing it. It has some elevation in places with the course being up against the Estrella mountains and even had some views of the city that were nice. The course was in great shape, especially for this time of year. Bunkers actually had sand in them! Unfortunately, I spent some time making sure. Grass was good tee to green. Facility is nice. Staff friendly. Our cart died due to a bad cable just after the first hole and we had help and a replacement cart quickly. There are some memorable holes on this course and I would recommend it to anyone looking to play on the west side. I came from south central Phoenix and it was quite a drive to get out there. Good course. Looking forward to trying the Victory course when I get a chance.
Great for early July
The course was in good shape for early July. Price was awesome. Fairways in good shape. Greens were still green and rolling good. The only thing i recommend is made sure you ask for a cup and some ice before you go out. It was 109 and couldn't get a drink as there wasn't any cups at the drink coolers. Had to wait until the drink cart came around.
A trip worth taking
The Founders course at Verrado is a must play course for people of all abilities. Fortunately I live close by (15 miles) but even if you live much further away, this course is well worth the trip. Being the end of June here in Arizona, you expect to see some degradation because of the heat but not at Verrado the course was in fantastic shape. I look forward to many more rounds here.
Very wide fairways, fringe was very very easy.
Very wide fairways, fringe was very very easy however,
if you mist the first cut your ball was lost. Lost many balls and did not want to look for them and find that they were being guarded by a poisonous critter. The course was extremely well maintained. I wish I played better. only other thing was that the greens were like concrete. after a few holes I got used to it.
GREAT bang for your buck
This course is a hidden gem in my opinion. One of the two or three best courses in the entire west Valley !! Great layout and normally excellent condition. It is the summer so it was perfect, but way better condition than most courses that I play in the summer months.
Love all about VERRADO !
The LayOut is so compelling to play/figure out Many should try their hand at it. The staff at Verrado is quite cordial and do feel We SHOULD enjoy the experience there.
Margie is a GEM & exemplifies the Customer SVC.level PLENTY os Facilities try to attain. Zach, also "outside SVC." as well as Jake give One the sense they sincerely hope We've enjoyed the round.
Conditions were definitely "stressed" I would say as it is toward the end-ish of June, still QUITE enjoyable for MySelf &another Golf Pal of Mine I showed off this track2. Greens still gave a test as well as the Tee2 Green fetures making this Facility one of My "Go 2" tracks. Big THANKS !
Great Layout
Course was in great shape for this time of year. I loved the greens as they where soft and smooth with a good roll. I'll be back
Great experience!
The course was in good condition and the facilities were in good condition. Cart services were readily available, on course restrooms were in good condition. Practice facilities were in good condition, staff in pro shop and outside were professional and friendly.
Great Place
I read some bad reviews from some other people and my experience was just the opposite. Course was in great shape, GPS worked, water was cold. Everything was perfect. I definitley will be back.
Love the experience of playing this course. I got a great rate and mostly enjoyed the experience. My only complaint is that as a single, I arrived about 90 min before my tee time. I had to wait while the 1st tee was open for the other 3 in my foursome (they never showed). The starter then offer me the opportunity to go out off the back alone. the 1st nine played fast but as I made the turn I hit all of the groups I'd waited for in the first place. I don't understand the rationale of not offering me the opportunity to go out ahead of my tee time if no one is on the course. Other than that, great experience
