This course have a great feel of nature
Course played very well. Very challenging and little room for error. Throughout the round I played every shot I know with various length, trajectories left to right etc... If you hit into the trees you still have a chance pitch out. The leaves and branches under the trees are maintained. There are a couple trees in the fairway so practice your low shots prior to play. Bunkers are plenty and are in good shape. Know which hole has an OB for it is unsuspecting at the tee box. Greens were fast even on the rainy day I played. Pace of play was good for for a full course and no hackers on a day with poor weather. The greens did not hold approach shots. It appeared that all shots to the green had to be played to the front and pay out to the middle. Stratege and good shots will make for a good day. The starting Marshal was very helpful in sharing his knowledge with course knoledge. The round I played was in preparation of an upcoming tournament and I feel in doing so I probably save 4 strokes. Position and angles are key on this beautiful course. I feel that yard for yard this is the best course in Sacramento for the advance player and too brutal for the beginner. Play well and have fun!
Ancil; Public Gem?
Ancil Hoffman is one of the best county owned courses in northern california, tight tree lined fairways, small greens, subtle elevation changes. The course handicap is the pricing and at times, staff attitude. My recent round (a Golf now discount, which is often met with staff disdain, too bad the course doesn't offer walkers discounts like they do riders)...12:20 t-time was pushed back because the pro-shop decided to "insert" another 4-some in front of us...for no reason other than, that's what they can do...
Great course
Great layout, great irrigation, tough course. All in all it's a great course! Will play here anytime!
PronShop staff was rude and did not have us on their sheet so they threw us behind a tournament
Course Pace to slow
I was only able to complete 12 holes. Tee time was for 12:40.
Pace of Play?
I will never play here again unfortunately. The course is pretty cool "park like". Pace of play is freaking stupid. Never could get going. I was hitting a ball every 20 minutes. Took us 3 hours to play 8. I picked my ball up after drive so actually didnt even play 8. They got me for $50. Never again.
Ancil Hoffman
Course still recovering from aeration. The best public course in Sacramento. Plenty of trees to get you in trouble. Turkeys, geese, deer, and other wildlife around the course.
Ancil Hoffman Revie
Gorgeous older style layout with lots of mature oak trees that put a premium on shot placement. The greens and fairways were in great shape,
Great course, dog friendly
I love Ancil, I play there a few times a month. Layout is great, and includes the toughest par 5 (7) and the toughest par 4 (16) in the Sacramento area. Avoid on the weekends though, as they often have 5 and even occasionally 6 player groups. I have had numerous 6 hour rounds, nothing compares for pace of play. I take my dog many times, and never an issue, but my wife wants to get her own cart when I do that, and they want $29 for a second cart, which is ridiculous. Always remember, every green here is elevated, so one extra club is a good idea. Always see wildlife BTW
Ancil Hoffman still delivers!
Nothing better than a tree-lined course on a 100 degree day that's in very good shape.
Ancil
Course was in great shape. Greens were good. Ton of geese, Turkey and some deer.
Not golfer friendly
Pace of play was very slow, could have been fixed by Marshall but wasn't!!! The coarse it self was in great shape, but staff was very poor
Nice layout
I played this course a few times more than 10 years ago and don't remember the course that much. The course is in good shape and greens were on the quick side. However, beware of the mine field on the greens as it appeared that no one was fitting ball marks! Don't get into bunkers as the sand from each hole ranged from hard packed to soft. Pace of play was good for a Friday afternoon and we finished 18 holes in a little less than four hours. BTW, I purchased a warmup small bucket of range balls, the machine only gave me about a dozen balls. Luckily for me, someone left some balls at the range that I was able to use; thus avoided a trip back to the pro shop to complain.
Fun at Ancil
I truly Love this course. It's on of Sacramento's best!
