Willowick Golf Course
About
Opened in 1929, Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana is Orange County's oldest public golf course. It is a challenging layout that has garnered a quite a following over the years. The course features wide fairways and large greens that offer ample room. There aren’t any water hazards a few strategically placed sand traps come into play and there are also mature trees lining the fairways. Golfers will get to practice a variety of different shots on this course. It is player-friendly enough for high-handicappers but there are still some challenges for low handicappers. The excellent condition of the greens and fairways are inviting no matter what your skill level. In addition to the golf course, Willowick also offers a grass driving range and three practice putting greens.

Not bad
This course gets a bad rap. Location isn't great; a lot of the holes aren't memorable; what's with the huge bunkers; no rakes in the bunkers; etc. But overall, it isn't as bad as described. The greens aren't horrible. Maybe a little bumpy at times, but they aren't slow. I hate slow greens. The fairways had so-so coverage. I don't care about no grass in the rough as long as there is grass in the fairway. So it's a muni with graffiti on some walls and lots of bunkers are missing rakes, but the greens are okay (despite the multiple colors) and there was enough grass on the fairways.

Average
too expensive for course conditions...no twilight pricing

Construction hat needed
The course felt like an abandon construction site. A lot of fairways areas were just dirt patches that needed grass and care. Pace of play was fair. Greens fair. My worry was not to damage any of my clubs from hitting off the hard surfaces. I won’t be returning unless it’s free, but that’s even pushing it too.
Old course and layout is too close. The green and doe tee boxes are within 15-20 feet or closer. You can hear the tee boxes hitting and when your putting : it can affect you.
Great value
Great value. Good restaurant, had breakfast before the round which was good. Warm up bucket was a nice add on. Pace of play was very surprisingly fast
Dumpy
Pro shop empty Spray paint on holes just loooks like a dump, crappy tee boxes. The one bathroom on the course should be condemned seriously it’s so bad. Not worth the money spend another $10 and go to a better course.
Always a great round for the price
Fairly flat course, rarely lose a ball. Greens are average, bunkers are a real challenge. A few tricky holes with greens that require lots of accuracy to set up for a birdie. The clubhouse is great, friendly staff and good food.
No frills, just fun golf
Been playing here 5-10x year since the mid ‘80’s - each time just like the time before. Public golf condition fairways, greens and sand traps and a mix on the course of retirees, fathers/sons and a number of beginners all enjoying a good day in the sun. Sure you’ll run into some locals who thing this is their Augusta National, but for the most part Willowick is like eating Sunday dinner at Mom’s after you’ve been away at college for a semester.
Fun course
I really like this course. It's like a smaller version of Los Serranos North/south. Fun, and conveniently located in the city of Santa Ana. Rough neighborhood, and sometimes you get the rift/raft in their wife beaters walking through. Just need to be careful, it's Santa Ana. Not Newport beach.
Horrible conditions. Divots all left unfixed, sand in middle of fairway, and rough spots throughout
Fun layout and good value
The greens were in pretty good shape and while the fairways are not lush and smooth there was always grass under my ball. Sometimes it was a variety of grasses but it was grass nonetheless. Snack bar was not open and there was no one going around so I couldn’t buy anything and it was a Sunday morning. In the final analysis, I only decided to golf the day before and Willowick was the only thing affordable.
