The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Claw crawl
This is one of the toughest public courses in the area. Skinny fairways and lots of trees will have you managing your tea shots into narrow necks of brush and trees that will make you think. The course is in pretty good condition right now and the greens Are doing better than they have in a long time… The course was just recently dressed for a tournament and is holding up nicely at the moment… Come out and play also make sure you have some golf balls if you do not hit it straight because you are going to hit a tree so don’t suck Ha ha ha enjoy
Excellent layout
I played the claw when it was in excellent condition, so I have to say the course layout is still one of the best in all of Florida. The first two holes are sweet and loveable, then after that you better get your game face on
To be honest if you never played the course when it was in great condition you truly missed a gem and I am sorry for that. The course now is not in great shape but the greens make up for what the rest of the course takes away in looks. The greens are quick, roll true and are receptive to all manner of shots.
There is no cart girl, nor a clubhouse and the carts are in tragic shape. We had to change our cart twice, once on the first hole and then again on #9, this happened the last time I played the course.
Despite the negatives, I will most definitely play the course again, just because of the challenge of the layout and the speed of the greens.
Horrible
Disgusting moldy carts without parking breaks. Tee boxes with trenches and no sand.to fill them. Very poorly maintained. Club house condemned due to Black Mold! Such an embarrassment to USF. Needs to be shut down!
Clubhouse closed
Course is in real need for investment. Portapotties?? 18th fairway covered with range balls. Clubhouse closed for demolition.
The claw in good shape
The course is in good shape, despite renovation on the clubhouse.
Disappointed Former Claw Player
I have been playing golf at The Claw for 20 years. I found the course to be bad shape and in need of grass cutting near the putting greens and near the fairways. We went to the range to hit some balls but was told that we had to go to the clubhouse (which was located in a cargo storage container) to purchase the balls and drive back over to the range to hit balls and then drive back to clubhouse to start our round.
There was also no place to sit down to eat after our round. The Claw used to have the best clubhouse sandwiches in Tampa.
Thank you so much for your review. We are happy to see you enjoyed our course. We value your feedback, and hope to see you back in the future.
Slow pace today
We have not played this course in while. We were early for our tee time, but there was a group of 30? Golfers ahead of us. 30 golfers...how is that possible or practical? We ended up starting on the back nine with a wait because others had the same idea. Course is in good shape ....difficult as usual. The clubhouse is in total disrepair. We were shocked! I know we have Covid restrictions, but this building looks like it has been going down for longer than than 12 months of pandemic. Hope they have plans to fix it. We will have to think twice before booking again.
The Claw Say It All
The Claw is the best layouts in Tampa Bay. So many great holes. I would put 3, 6,7,9, 11, 13,14 up against the best 7 holes from any golf course in the area.
Choose your tee box wisely. Prepare for a challenge and remember low scores at the Claw travel well!
Thank you DouglasCrum for your review. We are happy to see you enjoyed our course. We value your feedback, and hope to see you back in the future.
For the money it was ok.
Greens were pretty good but the course itself, although not bad layout, could do with some TLC.. There were no serviced carts available at 11.52am...had to use an unserviced cart on its return....no attendant in sight.
