The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

good course
good place to play, course was nice greens where good.
Longest game of my life!
My skill level is extremely limited in strategy play which is necessary for survival on this course. Hole 8's hole placement was impossible to snuggle, ball rolled more than 12 feet away from the cup with every putt. I lost two balls to "the claw", may they find themselves in the belly of the biggest alligator sunbathing next to the tee box on the back nine. Course was in super shape with a beautiful lay out. Greens slow due to recent fertilizer dusting, call before you book your tee time. Overall, hardest game of my life but I can't wait to get back!
Ups and Downs...
This course is one of the more challanging tracks in the area but never seems to be kept in the best shape. Drainage is a massive issue on this course as it had been almost two weeks without a major rainfall and course was still soggy in areas. Fairways are tight and rough is kept tall. I always say I wont go back until something major changes but still find myself there at least once every eighteen months. If you can play for less than $20, not a bad deal. Otherwise, go elsewhere.
Overall, course was in excellent condition
Staff was outstanding. Greens rolled very true. The value for 29 bucks on a Friday afternoon was definitely worth it. It did take over 4.5 hours to play however, which was a downfall. Not the longest course, but very tight and difficult holes, which included a balanced left to right, and right to left fairways. Worth your time to play!
Lots of water and sand traps
Even with all the obstacles, the fairwayswere groomed well and the greens were even better, pretty fast though. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly
THE COURSE HAS EXCELLENT GREENS
THE COURSE HAS EXCELLENT GREENS. FAIRWAYS WERE IN GOOD SHAPE. GOLF CARTS NEED WORK.
Accuracy is essential for scoring opportunities...small mistakes equal high score and lost balls.
The Claw is famous locally for its narrow fairways and elevated greens, making accuracy the most important factor in scoring. A small outing that had many first-time and occasional golfers participating created a slow pace of play, but the overall experience was good. The greens were quick and smooth and the course was in good condition. For the price, it was a good value.
Requires Good Course Management
Course retains water in fairways and plays a bit longer than the score card indicates. Also, the course has tree lined fairways and is tight. Longer hitters may wish to avoid this course as it requires good course management and accuracy. The greens were dry and very good to putt.
Course stays damp
The course is in really good shape for being a public course. Since it permits walkers I always try to tee off early. Be warned, the course is still wet in many spots off the fairway (I know, you are supposed to be down the middle....) and some fairways are damp too. Odd since the Tampa area has not had much rain in the past 2 weeks....is it being over watered?
Only 1 green needs work, and that was the signature hole, #14.
Overall a good value for the price paid and I always enjoy this course.
skip it
First time Playing there and probably the last. Course is pretty tight and challenging, but with the rest of the values out there really not worth the money. Also you would think since this is the college course it would be better maintained. Greens were significantly slower than what I'm used to.
Nice course
The course was in very good condition. We tee'd off at 11 am, there was noone in front or behind us. The staff was very friendly. The staff at the restaraunt were all extremely friendly as well. We. Will definitely be back.
USF has come full circle
At last the University of South Florida has a golf course to be proud of again, greens are in good shape and worth another look.
Nice ourse
Challenging from the back tees, with narrow fairways and elevated greens. Decent condition. wet, but most courses are this time of year. Good course, good value.
Nice course, great value!
Our green fees were $14 a player, staff was great, carts fully powered, fairways and greens in great shape... Just a fantastic day! Must have a great greens keeper over there because with all the heat August and September offer those greens were GREEN.
Great Golf Course
One of the most challenging course that I have ever played. Lots of opportunities to use irons. The narrow fairways forced my foursome to use all of the clubs in our bags. Greens and fairways were in good condition, even thought the local area has had lots of rains. Playing this course again this week.
Target golf. Really tough & challenging.
Course is spectacularly laid out. No homes on course. Quite a few interesting unique holes. Challenging course; tight tee shots on most holes, especially "the claw". If you're not in fairway, you're losing strokes. Greens large, elevated & fast. Fairways well carpeted. Carts battery powered w/ windshield & rain cover for bags in back. Will play again.
Overbooked and slow
It was cart path only on the front and 90 degree on the back, which I have no problem with but I think the spacing between tee times should be adjusted accordingly. It was a 5+ hour round with 3 groups on most holes, also I think the fact that the greens are aerated should be available prior to booking. Despite all this I love the tract and have been playing there for years, and will return for sure.
Terrible Experience
I was not notified that the greens were being aerated until I got to the course. The place that I booked the tee time requires the courses to post aerification notices yet the course declined to do so for reasons I can only assume. Then right before my 3some is ready to tee off we are told, not asked politely, told that a random person will be riding in the cart with my friend. This is not my 1st bad experience at this course and I am sad to say that I will never return.
Strong course
A couple of the holes were a bit wet but overall I enjoyed my round at the claw. 3 very unique par 5s that require solid strategy to make birdie and a strong layout throughout.
Good price
Good price, it was extremely wet and possible has drainage problems but then again we are in Florida where it rains everyday.
