The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Greens were rolling great!
played this course in a company organized scramble...and with it being a university course with tons of play i was pleasantly surprised with how nice the greens were rolling the day we played. course has some interesting holes and no 2 holes the same...if the greens stay like that i would highly recommend you play here
Slow day but a good day.
This course is in amazing shape. It's not very long but is still challenging. The greens are pristine and FAST. The signature hole, no 14, if you can hit a high driver, go over the corner; don't lay up. The pace was slow and no ranger was out to keep the groups moving. Was stuck behind a couple that took longer than a 4 some. All in all, a great course in great shape at a great price.
Tee Times to Pace of Play - Needs Reviewing
Great course with good greens but they must do something about getting players off the first tee on time and getting the players moving. IT IS CALLED A RANGER/GOLFING BABY SITTER for 18 HOLES.
Great day for golf but tee off times behind then pace very slow. Tee time 1:00pm, actual 1:20PM, finished at 6:25PM.
Based on the folks we seen playing and at this time of the year (tourists playing golf), you need a ranger to babysit these folks. Sorry, no other way to say it. They all think they are PGA hitters and can hit it 250 to 300. Help them understand their game.
If you're going to tear up a nice golf course like this, please just go bowling instead
It had been years since I played The Claw, but their low super twilight rate and the rare open tee sheet in March brought me back. While the layout plays more left to right than I prefer, it is a fun and fair golf course. Some fairways are cut very narrow, but there's plenty of grass on them. The greens rolled really nice, so it is sad that more players do not fix their ball marks here. I repaired five ball marks on each green and even discussed this with an employee, who agreed too many players at The Claw are not doing their part to maintain the course. So we now know USF needs two things: An on-campus football stadium and a class to teach hackers how to fix a ball mark.
Many Alligators
The staff is very welcoming, the race is moderately difficult, there are some narrow holes, the Greens are very fast, lot of water ponds, the rought is not very grassy. There is a girl who runs the field with a mobile canteen
But overall I like to play at this place and the food is good.
GOOD TRACK
fairways overseeded with rye, greens in good shape, seem to be running around 10 Stimp, old layout, Fun to play.
Our outing at the Claw
Excellent time...... weather and course......was great.......pace was good.....excellent value........will return
The course is fun to play.
The greens were nice and rolled the ball good. Long putts are makable. I will play here again.
Great course, slow play
Suggest playing earlier in day, we had 2:12 tee time, started 2:25, finished 17 6:30 too dark to continue
A fair test of golf
The Claw was in very good condition and a very fair test of golf. The greens were excellent and the ball rolled true to one's stroke. Pace of play was a bit slow but that is to be expected this time of year (Feb.) due to the influx of winter tourists and part-time residents.
It is critical that one drive the ball with reasonable accuracy on a number of holes on both the front and back nines. The fairways can get quite narrow on a number of holes and with wetlands guarding both sides of these fairways a stray tee shot is usually a lost ball tee shot.
Overall I would rate this golf course an excellent value with a very nice restaurant sporting a surprisingly diverse menu as an added bonus.
The claw
The starter set us off with a bad attitude. Both of us our humble golf ears but 7 handicaps and starter treated us like a couple of players that can't play without seeing us hit a ball. But the course itself is a fun layout
Great course condition
The round of golf was great....course is convenient for me....the challenges of the course are good. And seeing an alligator was a bonus!
Slow Play
We normally play in less than 4 hours, but the course was SLOOOW. There were students in front of us that play from the tips and should have been at the ladies tees. We tried to play through at #1, but the chauvinist saw my wife and said they would go ahead. My wife is a much better golfer.
Even without the foursome in front of us I have not seen a course play this slow for a long time even with the winter in Fl. I think because of the college there are a lot on beginners and the course can be hard for them
Nice course
I really like the course, it has some great holes. It needs sand in the sand traps, the sand is so thin they play like "waste areas" rather than sand traps.
FUN DAY
I WILL BE RETURNING IN THE FUTURE,I HAD A GREAT DAY, PLAYING THE CLAW.
This course narrow fairways
This course has fairly narrow fair ways which are not very forgiving. Add that to the already elevated and fast greens, this makes this course very interesting. The major down side to the round was the speed of play. Even though you were instructed at the start to play ready golf to keep the pace flowing, this did not happen. Never saw a marshall out at all. If there was one, the speed of play may have been increase with less waiting time.
Great Course
The course is in great shape and a challenge. We had a great time playing with no waiting at every shot.
The Claw.....tight
The fairways are tight and missing some grass, I hate having to lay up off the tee on par 5's but you have no choice. The greens are all elevated , fast and in great shape, the lay out is quite interesting but you may want to bring few extra balls with you. Not much grass around the greens which makes it very hard to get under you ball for a pitch shot that needs to get in the air because of the elevated greens. All in all I woud go back with a different game plan next time.NÔW on a more serious note....I know there is someone out there that is not very Honest and should fess up to his or her mistake , you reap what you sow and there fore it will come back to you TEN fold.Stand up and be a MAN or WOMAN , why should I have to suffer or pay for your bad driving skills. If anyone out there can help me find out who hit my car with there car I would truly be greatful. I have a white Honda accord that I think was struck by a black car or truck on Saturday Jan 25 in the parking lot of the Claw golf club and I know that they were probably not alone or that someone might have seen this. No one would like this to happen to them I'am sure of that.....come on people it's your mistake act like someone that has responsibility instead of a child. You can call the Claw pro shop with any information they have my name and number.....Thanks for standing up and being an adult.
Great Course!
We arrived early and the young man check us in and explained everything perfectly. We hit a small bucket on the driving range. No woods are allowed but was a great warm up area. The fairways were in great condition and the greens rolled true. Over all this course is a great value for any golfer. Its long and narrow fairways are troublesome but playable of all handicaps. We will be back soon.
