The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Challenging course.
Course has some blind water hazards that can be frustrating if you have never played the course before. Greens were in good shape. Rough stayed high and fairways are often narrow so a challenging course.
Great Florida course
From the first tee to the last hole, the course was great! We had what seemed like a deluge that broke out near the end of the round. After about a 20 minute delay, the remaining two wholes still played well and we were able to complete our round. I will definitely visit USF's Claw again.
Very wet, buggy, grass not cut....
Will not return...drove 88 miles because we heard it was challenging.
A challenging course
The Claw at USF is rated as one of the top college courses. It plays long, has trouble all over the place forcing the player to control wayward shots. There are enough easier holes to help average golfers retain their sanity. When I need humbling I go play the Claw. Maintenance at times could be better but usually the course is in good shape.
WOULD SERVE AS A GREAT TOURNAMENT COURSE.
THE COURSE HAS MANY MAINTENANCE STAFF AND THEY WERE REALLY WORKING HARD THE DAY WE PLAYED. THEY KEEP THE COURSE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE COURSE GIVES YOU SOME BIRDIE OPPS--BUT ALSO HAS THE REALLY HARD LONG AND TREE LINED HOLES. THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO PLAY AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT.
The Claw
course is in poor shape right now - looks like they plowed the fariways and tee boxes. Maybe it will be better after the crops come in. I played here last year and it was in much better shape
Slow Play and changes needed
After playing The Claw a few times I am no longer going to play there until some changes are put into place. First of all, it took over five and half hours to play a round. I understand that it was a popular day to play but basically having zero pace and no marshal speeding people up was unacceptable. Also, there was no drinking water on the course and summer time in Tampa having water is a must have. And lastly this may be a little picky but there was no dress code enforcement. There were multiple people wearing jeans and t-shirts, I understand its a public course but they should have some standards.
Nice challenging course. Uphill greens so up an extra club.
A few of the greens had some rough spots but overall the course was in descent shape.
Decent.
Course not nearly as difficult as marketing. Par or Bogey golf is not hard to achieve. Course could use some attention. Water hazards and tree-lines are easy on the eyes.
Always a challenge
This course is a favorite because I can't beat it. If you think you are going to have an easy round, think again. Every green is elevated, water abounds, and the yard ages are accurate. By this I mean when the score card says the hole is 400 yards, it is, not inflated like many courses. I was disappointed by the condition of the greens. Not normally as inconsistent. Still, the value I got on Golfnow,2 players for 16 bucks each, you can't beat it.
many wet areas that do not drain well.
everything went well until the starter sent a group off the back nine in front of us slowing us up by 20 minutes
Challenging
This course is pretty unforgiving. If you aren't straight off the tee you may get pretty frustrated with this course. The greens are all elevated which makes distances hard to judge. The courses condition was pretty good even though we have had little rain and lots of heat. I will go back but after my private lessons and I look forward to scoring much better than I did.
Challenging course for a great price
Well maintained, very tight, beautiful scenery, greens rolled true but need slight maintenance. Great day, nice staff, recommend anytime.
The Claw is great!
A nice urban club with plenty of water. Everything is well maintained. The Greens are like Turtle backs and Fairways in great conditions. I'd go back tomorrow.
Has character
I moved to Florida recently and have found that most fairways are tight to the ground. That will make it more difficult for the average golfer. This golf course has a decent amount of length to the fairways, course has character and greens nice. A couple greens with issues but it is apparent they are working on them to be better.
Narrow but clean cut
Very narrow course, some holes very nice atmosphere , others are right next to fletcher which is very loud. Other than that it's very clean cut with nice greens and fairways
The cource was in mint condition. Great looking fairways and greens. The staff and maintenance crew have done a fantastic job!!
I have been playing this course on and off for the last two years and am very impressed with the progress they have made. The Claw at USF is as good as some of the premier courses in the area but does not cost as much to play. The course conditions are perfect! Lush green fairways and greens everywhere you look. I highly recommend this course.
Good value for the money.
Good course for the money...some tight and challenging holes...greens rolled true...great wildlife, including the two gators we saw. Will definitely be back.
Great variety in hole layouts, requires controlled shots.
Fun course that you must place your shots due to narrow landings.
Picturesque, great greens, longish par 4's. Fairways were fertilized, thus cart path only, but that is for our future benefit. Good work grounds crew.
The Claw
If you dont hit straight with consistency, you will shoot a nice high number on this course.
