Wigwam Resort - Gold Course
About
The Gold Course is one of three 18-hole courses offered at the Wigwam Resort, which was named one of Golf Magazine's "Silver Medal Resorts." Golf Digest cited the Gold Course as one of the best public courses in the state. Mature trees are present on all of the courses, as well as winding creeks that create water hazards, which come into play on several holes. There are also strategically placed sand bunkers present on the course. The rolling landscape of the course causes elevation changes that can affect shots. The Wigwam Resort facility also has a putting green and chipping area.

Wigwam outing
Wow!! Great layout and great pace of play! Staff was awesome and the course was in good condition!
Seriously
I had long heard about the golf course at the wigwam and was delighted to play it for $38.00. Surprisingly that was all it was worth. There is no signage at the hole nor on the score card that shows that layout of the holes. The starter was rude. Many holes ran parallel to each other and they had overbooked so it was extremely slow. I would not play this course again.
Big improvements
I've always liked this course, but it is in the best condition I've ever played.
One of the best.
My wife and I do a lot of traveling for work and of course we take our clubs with us so we try to experience various courses wherever we go.
You know its a good course when we are still talking about it the next day, the fairways were like playing from carpet and the greens were just as nice, even with all the sand we found it easy to get out, nice and fluffy. The only thing was there was a threesome that for some reason was playing extremely slow, we were hoping for a Marshall to come by but didn't happen but other than that, I would recommend this course to anyone.
Great course
Great course, however they need a Marshall to keep up the pace. Started at 2:45 didn't get to finish last 5 holes. Dave was not a friendly guy
Great course.
I had heard that this course was newly renovated, but had never had the opportunity to play it. I decided to treat myself for my birthday and play here. Wow! What a beautiful course. It can be very difficult as there are many traps and water to be aware of. Yes, I participated in the sand traps and I fed a ball to the water monster. You really need to know where all the trouble is and play your next shot accordingly.
I was teamed up with a couple of professional baseball players in the area for spring training. Half my age and twice my distance. Geez, these guys hit long. Humble pie anyone....I am reasonably long for a weekend golfer, but these guys hit 300+ on their drives. (No, I am not exaggerating. I have a GPS and I measured some of their shots.) However, even they had some problems scoring. You still have to chip and putt well to score here. Long is helpful, but accuracy is a premium.
The ranger/starter warned me that the pace of play might be impacted if golfers chose the wrong tees and won't move up to the correct ones for their game. He said some golfers egos go for the longer tees, but they can't actually play them. He told me to try them if you like, but be ready to move up if you can't.
Apparently, most golfers must have listened to him as we did not have to wait much at all. We played fairly quick. Even the baseball players commented that we did not have to wait. I think we finished at about 4 hours. That is an excellent time for a course like this. The score card says that the round should take 4 hrs and 15 minutes. I was really surprised how well the pace flowed. I think we saw the ranger driving around spot checking on pace. It must be working as we kept a good pace going.
The gold course is nothing like the other two courses here. This one is hands down the best.
Wigwam review
Booked the Gold course but when i arrived they moved me to a smaller course as they said they were moving faster than expected, but gave no notice of a sooner start time. Staff was not friendly and seems to be in a hurry and not focused on players. Sorry to see as in the past this has been a very good experience. Suggest everyone reconfirmed their tee times and course assignment. Waited a year to play the Gold course and don't think I will return as there are many better customer serving courses in the area.
Think you are good????
This course will challenge your game big time. I'm a legit travelling 6 handicap and played the course from 6900 yards. If you miss greens, (they are all heavily bunkered tight to the greens), you need to flop onto the green off of tight grass. Not an easy shot at the best of times... But add to the mix hard-dry 13+ stimp greens and it isn't a lot of fun. 93 times later I was done. I played it again from 6300 yards and was 78... Way more enjoyable. Swallow your pride and play the right tees. This course is A real good challenge for good players but I would say if you don't break 90 regularly you will struggle. The greens are the fastest I have played in the greater Phoenix area. Staff was friendly. Bring a gps as carts don't have them and there are a lot of faced carries. Driving range is thin (eg. Not a lot of grass...dirt).
Bob Conroy
Had played the Gold course multiple times 20-25 years ago, and found it a fun as I remembered. Great layout in good condition, nice pace on the greens, and speed of play was fine. New sand in the bunkers was noted on a few occasions, and was very playable. Beverage cart and halfway house personnel were very pleasant. I didn't rate the "Staff Friendliness" portion as I will give them a mulligan(lots of players, busy day), and let it go at that. It was a beautiful day and a great track and that's the important stuff.
Bring an umbrella for all the beaches!
This course has had some updating and they are all positive. If you play from the tips you better be a pretty good golfer! We played from the orange tees. They were having a tour tournament when we played and some of the pin placements were really challenging! Most of the fairways were lush and green. The greens were quick and often large.
The water holes were lacking water, but my ball still found some twice. The sand is some of the best I have played from which tells you something about my game! Pretty course to play.
Nice course but long for the ladies
A very nice course with challenging elevated greens. At close to 6000 yards and very heavy rough it is a bit much for your average female recreational golfer particularly for ones in their 60's. The rough and greens will challenge the men as well.
Big improvement with bunkers
The new sand in the bunkers makes them fair to play a big improvement over previous years. The course is still a great and fair layout. Greens were in great shape as well.
Renovated Golf Course very playable, but can be tough
One of two Robert Trent Jones courses at Wigwam Resort, this is the championship layout that hosts many high profile events throughout the year. After a renovation this summer by Tom Lehman, however, the course is more playable for average players and a little more challenging for the big hitters, where they'll now find that bunkers they used to carry are in their landing zones. With thick rough, hitting the fairways is also a must if you want to score.
Better Value Elsewhere
Arrived at course for breakfast before round to find out that restaurant at golf shop is not open weekday mornings any more - to serve three courses. Greens were just sanded, but no notice given by golf shop staff. New bunkering a definite improvement, but $69 for a round on the Gold is way too expensive for this course. Better golf value at Verrado or Raven Phoenix for same money, and they are better courses for challenge and condition. Resort was not busy.
Great course
Played nine holes early morning, staff was great, very helpful, provided ice cooler on cart. Course was in great shape.
Freindly staff... friendly fairways
I've been playing for a couple of years now and was intimated by trying club courses... this was one of the friendliest places I've been to...
Great course
The only problem was the address on our golf now confirmation was wrong so we were late. The staff was all very nice about it though and fit us in anyway.
Dumb it down
I used to love playing the Gold course but since they completed a Tom Lehman renovation I'm not so sure.
They removed quite a few sand traps and essential made it a easy muni. The greens are in horrible condition but they just punched them a few weeks ago to be fair. I couldn't hold a shot as everything I sent had a ton of roll out. Mind you 1 play from the Orange tees and they were well up. I'm 67 yo and play to about a 6 but I shot my lowest round on the gold 76 with virtually no problem. I realize what they are trying to do but to me I preferred the old GOLD as opposed to the NEW GOLD. I like to have to think.
Left wanting more
We arrived to find out the course had just reopened, usually not a bad thing and the pro shop told us that there had been no play for 2 months on the course so it should be great. Well, the tee boxes were the highlight. The greens were bumpy and slow, imagine if there had been play in the last 2 months. Not sure why they would open a course for play when the bunkers are still being shaped and there is new sod just laid that you need to drop from. The course layout and holes were good and when finished I am sure you won't be disappointed but sadly, I can't help feeling let down which makes me think twice about returning
They told you the course condition prior to teeing off, and gave you a bounce back certificate. 0-4 handicap? LOL...yeah right.
Revisit to Wigwam
Only my second time playing at Wigwam. Played the Heritage course as a single but got paired up with a threesome. The course was a typical old school layout. Mature trees line the adequate fairways and not much rough. There was some water hazards and a couple of forced carry's. Found the bunkers to be more dirt than sand, yet not to challenging. The greens rolled fairly true. A few greens displayed bare spots, but hey it's summer in Arizona! Overall a fun and enjoyable course. The entire staff were friendly and courteous. Next time I'll play the Gold course (was closed).

Easy muni....and you say you are a 5-9 handicap? I am an advanced golfer, and found this course challenging if played from the tips.
