Camelback Golf Club - Ambiente Course
About
Camelback Golf Club features two courses, Padre and Ambiente (formerly known as Indian Bend Course). The Ambiente Course underwent a major renovation in 2013. Making the course more eco friendly was one of the major goals of the renovation in addition to improving the layout's playability for a wider range of skill levels. The creatively shaped greens offer a variety of different putting options that present interesting risk-reward opportunities. The renovation added 100 acres of native desert and grass areas that add not only beauty but also require a third less water. Rolling terrain is the defining characteristic of the Ambiente Course, from the undulating fairways to dramatic drops in elevation. There are five sets of tees with forward tees that have easier approach angles and no forced carried, allowing even beginners to approach the golf course with confidence.

Good
Good course and well kept. A different sight than you would expect to find in the desert. Greens were soft, fairly quick and bumpy as they heal from aeration. Fun challenge close to town.
Great course but difficult
Amazing course and layout, be prepared to lose golf balls.
Very nice design. Make your shots count.
I really enjoyed this course. You must make your shots. stay out of the flowers, it is a pentalty. Well placed bunkers. I know there is a lot of complaining about this course, but this is just because they didn't play well. Course management is important. This Is A Must Play.
Welcome Addition
Ambiente is a welcome addition to the Phoenix area golf scene as we waited, quite some time, for the course to be re-done. The links-look and feel is a nice change to desert golf. There was not a bad lie on the fairway and no bare spots as can be this time of the year. The greens are large, fast, and undulating and, in my opinion, the courses "protection". As super seniors (over 65) we played from about 6200 yards and the course is very playable at that yardage. Again, outside 30', the greens can be monsters. Good sand in the bunkers and very consistent, unlike most of the area courses, this time of the year. They are sandy and not crusty. Bring a drink; as water stops are few and far between. Management has put large coolers on several tees filled with bottled water. We have played, now, four times and look forward to having Ambiente on area "rota" as a place we enjoy playing. Of course, Camelback is an historic resort and a great place to, not just golf, but experience good food and a great atmosphere.
Wonderful Design
Links style with long grass and fescue alongside the rough. This is definitely not an Arizona "Desert Golf" style course. Tee to green was well maintained and green. The greens were hard and tough to hold longer irons or low trajectory shots, but 7 iron in they held just fine. They also putted quick and true. If you're looking for a change, this is the place. Wonderful course!
Muy bien Ambiente
Nestled in the Indian Bend wash lies a links style course that will give a wide variety of golfers a challenging, rewarding and enjoyable round. Add in some wind and those tempting pins will be more difficult and your short game and flat stick play more essential for that rare bird. The course flows through the wash and the tall grasses and desert flora give a links like look to the course. The course has well placed bunkers with good quality sand and the greens while new are subtle and firm. So go for the gusto, go to Ambiente !
The course won!!!
I have played some difficult trakcs in my years of playing but none have compared to this course. The course was in fantastic shape and the toughest I have ever stepped upon. Bring a lot of inexpensive golf balls. If you don't hit the fairway there is a good chance that you are not going to find your ball. That is the primary reason the round took so long. Even though the staff suggested not looking for your ball and just dropping at the point of entry, eveyone still looked anyway and it led to a 5 hour round on a not too crowded course. As one of the members of our group stated at the completion of our round..."I felt like I just survived 12 rounds of Ali vs. Frazier". That sums it up pretty well.
Great fairways & greens
Nice fairways & greens. Traps were hard sand. Hard to find your ball in the rough areas. Price to play is on high side but a pleasant experience.
Great new redesign.
Links style course much improved over old Indian Bend track. Keep it in the fairways and it's a very playable course; stray into the native grasses and you will have long day. Greens rolling true and moderate speed. For a course less than a year old, conditions were very good. POP excellent for a single player out early - under 3 hours! A must play in the Phoenix metro area.
Great track
The course allows for a good balance of power, finesse, and target play. A solid challenge, without being ridiculous. Good mountain views from the course, and the course is attractive. Staff is very friendly.
Remodeled to Near Perfection
Played a twilight round for $30. By far the best value in Scottsdale. For a brand new course, Ambiente, has an old soul. Tee to green the course is very fair with wide fairways and strategic fairway bunkers. The greens are very difficult with lots of undulation. The natural wash areas can be penal. The only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was the 15th green. A poorly designed par 3 - 204 yards to a green that is not fit for minature golf. The odd shape and slope have no resemblance to anything else on property.
What a change
This is a must play, in great condition for a new course. Excellent condition tee to green. Teed off at 1100 am and had the course to ourselves. Greens are very good and fast.
Ambiente redesign works.
First time to play this course since the the make over. Course in excellent shape, greens were lightning fast for this time of year . Greens were hard since this is totally new green. Difficult to stop a ball at full wedge distance. Will definitely play here again.
New course layout
Unfortunately, we played on a 113F+ day with extreme humidity due to a flash flood on the course the night before. The rough is exceptionally brutal and the greens are new so there is no hold whatsoever. You need to hit the front of the greens at a high angle if you want to hold them but they putt beautifully and fast. Even short chips ran to the back so be careful. I liked the layout and there are bunkers placed to make you think twice about club selection from the tee boxes. Looking forward to playing on a day where I don't pass out from the heat!
Bring extra golf balls!
The rough (non native stuff) comes into play way too much if you slightly miss the fairway. You will then be looking for the ball and most likely will not find it. No telling what is living in that stuff..... Severe bunkering throughout (hard to physically get in & out of the bunkers). No trees. No water fountains but the ice chests with water bottles helped. Understandably hard fairways & greens as it is a new course. I prefer the old Indian Bend track.
Pace slower then expected but overall conditons good
Course redesign is good fair but challenging. Range was in so/so shape. Understood there was a large event that morning. May have had something to do with it. Plan to play it again soon.
Greens
Greens were in great condition, for just having them punched a week or so earlier.
new course
This course if fairly new and as such needs a little more time to mature. Greens are still firm but roll true. You can find trouble on some tee shots but the layout is good.
Severely penal course with wild greens
A very difficult golf course, with very thick rough bordering every hole. The course also features some wonderful, big and wild greens. I enjoy the course, but think it would be much improved if the "native" rough were significantly thinner, to provide some chance of finding and playing a ball.
Conditions were OK, but not ideal. The greens remain firm as this is a new course and firm turf is to be expected. Also, this course should play firm. Unfortunately, really only the greens were firm on this day--the fairways were soaked to the point where tee shots would plug, carts would splash while driving through, etc. Seems silly to me to market the course as "links style" and then overwater it to that extent. I was also confused to see the course actively watering the "native rough" areas.
I look forward to see how the course continues to age and grow, and will certainly return.
Can't wait for my next trip to Ambiente
This course is a top 5 in the Phoenix area. I love the variety of holes...short and long par 3, 4, and 5's. This links style course is really cool and strategy comes into play on most of the holes. I can't wait to go back. The staff is friendly and the course is the perfect balance of challenge/fun. The greens are really firm and fast, which adds quite a bit of challenge. I was even after 6 holes and 3 putted the next 3 greens in a row. I want revenge!!!
I will come back to ambiente again and again, as long as they keep the cost reasonable. $50 in the summer is pretty steep, but in the case of this course, it's worth it.
