About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Course was in excellent condition!
I was pleasantly surprised to see how beautiful the course was. The staff was very friendly and made sure that things started on time and flowed well. Pace of play was great. My only disappointment was that I didn't have a chance to play the course again while I was in town! I will definitely play this course again each and every time I am in the area.
Ok value
Course conditions were so-so, lots of areas were burnt out or sparse. The first few holes really make the course feel kind of cheap. However, things improve as you progress and there are some quality holes. Range balls are outrageously expensive at $8.25 for 60 balls, and they didn't even let me hit off the grass except for drivers, ouch! Very few food choices at the turn. Overall experience was, ok. The practice green was nice, so I spent some time there after the round, soaking it all in.
challenge...both on the course and in the skies!
Professional staff in there shop and setting up our clubs on the cart. Really tried to be exact and get us off in time. As stated before..lots of moguls which provide framing for each hole. The entire course was in very good shape, and pace of play was excellent. Two really great marshals both friendly and then helped us out on two holes raking traps so that we could keep our pace. We played The round on a hot deal which made it very good value, even taking into consideration....the flight path of the planes throughout most of the round! Still a good challenging track, for low handicappers but accessible for the high too.
Not sure what they are trying to do
The number of players that were squeezed onto the golf course was unworkable. In a 3 we waited on every shot for 5+ hours.
I think apart from the numbers of players, the course is set up so the average player will have a lot. The fairways are narrow and the rough is so long you will lose a ball very easily. Been playing in AZ for many years, worst setup I have seen.
Great value and rare playable Pete Dye.
Got great rate through Golfnow.com and thoroughly enjoyed layout. A lot of great strategic choices and a a very playable layout. Condition was very good - not what you might find up in Scottsdale, but better than most.
Fun Course with Laid Back College Attitude
I played at about 8:00 a.m. on 3/6/14 and we liked it so much we came back to play again at 7:30 a.m. on 3/7. I am a 16 handicap, and I played with my wife, who is 40+. We played as a twosome on Thursday, and as a foursome on Friday. The round took 4.25 to 4.5 hours. The course was in good shape. The rough was a bit, well, rough in spots, but the fairways and greens were superb. It was visually attractive, but for power lines that were visible on most holes and in play on some. My wife had fun from the forward tees, and I was more than adequately challenged from the "Champion" tees (about 6200 yards, par 70). There are "Pro" tees, too, if you are that good (about 7000 yards). It is a typical Pete Dye design, with water on several holes and railroad ties as an "integral part of the course." (The scorecard says you don't get relief from the ties.) The course is a fair test, and the hazards are pretty much right there for you to avoid. Not much in the way of blind shots or surprise hazards. The course marshal made his presence felt about the right amount. He gave my wife a Sun Devils pitchfork logo to hang on her bag "as a special gift to welcome our woman golfers." She felt it was a nice touch. The restaurant food was good (we had fish tacos) and the covered patio is a nice place to eat and watch the golfers play. The range has everything you could ever need. Range balls are not complimentary. I would happily play it again for a fun, challenging round on a good course with a bit of that laid-back college attitude.
Great Couse
This is a great course, great weather and great service people.
Was looking forward to
playing another Pete Dye but was disappointed with the overall experience. The course was average at best and only a couple of holes gave me that "dye"abolical feeling. There are better courses for the dollar and I will not be going back.
This course is very playable for all types of golfers
This was a very drive friendly course for the most part. There is plenty of room to spray the ball. If you play the right tees for your golfing ability, this is an excellent course. The pace of play was great.
Great Condition, Great for the Money, Check out the Trophies.
I played rounds this weekend of over $150 /Rd at other courses, and I found Karsten more memorable. The course is in good shape now, and the practice facility is nice. I like the clubhouse. Check out the US AM Trophy replica as well as the US Pub Links Replica Trophy. You can also check out some of Phil's Accolades.
The course is a bit tight, but that's because it's on or near the ASU campus. You can often drive onto the neighboring holes which makes just smashing a drive kinda easy. So, it is desert golf, but doesn't penalize as much for wayward shots.
Enjoy this reasonable priced memorable golf course.
POOR OVERSEEDING
NOT TAKEN CARE OF AS IN THE PAST. THEY HAVE REALLY CUT DOWN ON THE OVERSEED.ONLY OVERSEEDED NEAR CLUBHOUSE AND AREAS SEEN FROM PUBLIC AREAS.
A little different than most desert courses
The pace of play was awful the day we played. Very good course a little better than average overall condition. Challenging and has a variety of tees. Has a little different look and feel compared to other desert courses.
Gem within the city
Nice course with a lot of deceptive pot bunkers. Very good conditions. Course seemed to play shorter than it actually is.
Power lines next to the course and starting planes overhead distract a bit from the beautiful layout.
great value as always
great links course, many tee boxes for all ages and abilities.
Nice course
Must play this course if you are in Scottsdale It 's a challenging course . Really enjoyed our round and the all the staff are friendlyk
The real deal
wow, the whole day was awesome, the highlight of our weeks golfing trip to Phoenix the course of surrounded by roads and is very close ow the airport but non of this matters when your out on the course, the Pete Dye design is simply amazing perfect fairways manicured greens all hiding behind grass mounds and perfectly placed bunkers
Great course
This course tests your accuracy both distance wise and right to left. I hit a number of greens only to find my ball somewhere else.
The rolling hills are fun but tough. A few times we had to wonder where the next hole was due to the compressed nature of this course. Some fairways parallel each other a bit too close for those that don't always hit straight.
All in all this is a really fun course that will make you think about every shot.
Great university course.
Course was difficult but fair. Well placed bunkers throughout made for challenging placement of shots.
Grerat Experience
My son and I left the frigid Polar Vortex of Michigan for a few days of R&R in AZ and were able to play ASU Karsten. The conditions of the course were great and the greens rolled true and quick. There were a lot of challenging holes and we enjoyed not only the course, but a great change to bond with my 16 year old. The staff were awesome and I would recommend this course to anyone in the area.
Best course around for the money
I have played Karsten 25-30 times over the last 15 years. It is always a great place to play. The people are very friendly and professional and the course is challenging and fun to play. It is a Pete Dye designed course. The challenges are generally that Dye uses "bumps" , and sometimes very severe "bumps" throughout the course. If you miss a fairway you will be either behind or on the side of one of these bumps. I think it creates some challenging shots that many golfers never encounter. Many shots are blind. Dye hides bunkers behind these bumps on several holes so you must be accurate. I always enjoy the challenge and the value. Go.
