About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Handsome, well designed, stiffly challenging!
Very tough course, especially for first time around! Always wanted to play Karsten - - and now I have, thank you! A great experience. I'd ask the pro shop guy to be more friendly in explaining the surcharge fee, otherwise staff friendliness was superb. Typically we were not told the greens had recently been aerated - - they were not yet back to conditions one would expect at such a highly rated, university golf course. Always disappointing when no one in the booking process or pro shop tells you, beforehand, the greens are in "aerating conditions"! It's an industry-wide problem, still not fair to golfers. BTW, in my younger days I was a 10-handicap shooting the high 70's & low 80's, dependent upon the golf course, playing a LOT of golf courses, but nowadays very little as my interests have changed. Thus I do know about golf and rating courses.
Variety of holes makes for a fun round
ASU Karsten is a course that allows you to use all clubs in your bag. Short par 4's and long ones along with the contoured mounding on each hole will create opportunity to play a wide variety of shots.
Absolutely love playing this course.
This course is a fantastic example of why I love golf so much. You make a mistake on this course, you suffer the consequences; you hit a great shot, you reap the rewards. You are required to think throughout the entire round and the finishing holes (16, 17, and 18) are three of the best finishing holes in the Valley. My advice: make sure you get the ball in the fairway, otherwise you will find yourself muttering not so nice things as you experience the price of missing the fairway.
Go while you still can
Looks like this course probably doesn't have much longer as ASU plans to bulldoze it after they take over Papago. That's a shame, because it is a very good course with the best practice area available to the public in the Phoenix area.
I really enjoyed the course, a flat course without a flat lie to be found. Conditions were very good from tee to green, especially for the middle of summer. Challenging but fair course, no matter what tees you play from.
Tourist Trap
Tough course with a great layout.
For summer the condition was good, greens held shots.
Played on a Sunday and most players seemed to be tourist players with very little coarse etiquette. One foursome held us up horribly. However, I assume play isn't always this way and would certainly play here again. It was very challenging.
Not an AZ course
This course is great for a getaway from the desert courses in Arizona. A lot of green and not a cactus n play!!
ASU Karsten
I was looking forward to playing ASU Karsten because I had heard so much about it and had never played there before...i must say i was a bit disappointed....the course is par 70 and there are no par 5 holes on the front nine....to me the course was an ok layout but nothing spectacular....it was in very good shape though.....Not a track that really got me fired up but that is just me....
Demands course management
Classic Pete Dye course. Challenges the golfer with every shot. A lot of blind shots
very good condition for the summer
The greens were rather slow, but otherwise I was super impressed. The entire course was in very good shape. The layout of this course is also one of my favorites in the valley.
Phil's course
We played here to say we play at Phil M.'s course.
Play was slow due to some couples ahead of us.
The grass along the fairway was too long to my liking.
Okay value.
Miserable
Don't waste your time... Place is packed with kids, mats on the range and a small bucket was 9 bucks!
Unique challenges, nice condition & staff!
Only my 3rd time out here, I am on a swing change so I wasn't ready for the excellent narrow design with all the Pete Dye mounds. I even got lost on holes - at times, you need to be under 130 yds to see pins if you are slightly off the fairways.
Very good greens & fairways are among the greenest for summer around. The ASU student cart crew is cool. I will play here once my game is better again - I highly recommend this place for visitors or low cappers who want to work on shot shaping, and accurate approach shots!
To be played again.....
Course was beautiful and well maintained. Definitely will play again next time I'm here!
Worth every penny
I have to say I really enjoyed playing this course. I've lived in AZ now for 9 yrs and always wanted to play. It did not disappoint my expectations of what a great designer Pete Dye is. The course was in excellent condition. I played alone and got waived through anytime I came upon another group. Finished in just under 3 hrs. Several tees give a challenge for any level. Distance markers in fairways are always a plus.
Great Layout
Love ASU Karsten, the greens were in fair condition, the greens were punched about a month before i played and there were a minimal dead spots.
Hot Deal.
We purchased this tee time for less than 20 bucks in the afternoon. Course was in great shape and we had great time. This course is pretty challenging requiring straight shots off the tee and greens can be tough to read. All in all, it was challenging yet fair. I will definitely coming back!
Nice track
It was a very hot day. Plenty of cold water on the course. The course overall was in very good shape for as hot as it is. The greens were a little rough. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Good course for shot makers....
Fair course for intermediate to advanced players. Bunker shots are difficult because the sand is usually wet in the early mornings from over night irrigation.
Course in great shape!
Played here mid afternoon on July 1st. Course was pretty much wide open. Greens were in great shape as well as the rest of the course. You can't really ask for much more during the summer months. This course is always a challenge. A few long challenging par 4's that can break up a good round.
