About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

nice time
Love Pete Dye courses however ASU not in the best shape //
price made up for the conditions
Pete Dye Challenges you!
Great course! Very nice condition. Don't let the yardage fool you.....131 slope......need to hit it straight or you'll need a calculator to add up your score.
Tough par 70
Always enjoy this course and its challenges. Need to know scoring holes. It is in good shape and worth playing before it is gone.
Great course.
We play here every time we are in Phoenix, at least once every year, always very enjoyable. Sorry to see it close.
This was an unusual course
I enjoyed the course, it had some interesting holes. There was a lot of activity going on--a major bike race through the campus forced me to travel extra 20 minutes through a detour, there were hundreds of runners, and much screaming yelling from a soccer and baseball game. Aside from all that it was a great experience. Though I liked the course , I was expecting something AWESOME since it has ASU, Phil Mickleson, and Karston attached to it.
Tough layout for the short hitter.
Beautiful layout with good views of the stadium and surrounding countryside. Golfed with a good bunch of guys.
OK course
This course wasn't terrible, but in my opinion there are many other options out there with much better values. The course is not difficult (although I did not play the tips) and the greens were hairy with some dead spots. We played here because a friend from out of town wanted to play here. There were worst ways to spend the day, but I would have preferred to give my money to Papago (if playing in this area)
Not a Pete Dye Masterpiece
ASU Karsten fails to live up to the names/history associated with it. I think the biggest problem is simply the location. Throughout your round you will be surrounded by a 7 story power plant, high tension power lines, gigantic water storage towers, busy roads, and other golfers in your fairway because the holes are close to each other. With the exception of a few holes, the lay out it self is rather simplistic too. ASU Karsten is a perfect example of why links courses should not be built in the desert (even Pete Dye couldn't pull it off). This review may come off as harsh but only because I am judging this course compared to other Pete Dye courses.
Great course - slow play
The course was in great shape and the weather was perfect. However we eventually caught up to several groups playing a "shamble" and it was indeed! It took over 3 hours to finish 9 holes and one of our playing partners could not take the slow play and left. We continued for another 6 holes over the next 2.5 hours and then drove back to the clubhouse. As I write this review I wish I had mentioned the slow play to the management. Or if we would have been allowed to play through this would probably have not been so terrible. We did not see a marshal on the course to help move groups along.
We could have used Marshall to speed up play and to help the group ahead of us to obey the cart path only rule. Of course they would have been slower
No Marshall allowed the group ahead to play slow and to drive their carts all over the course despite being a cart path only day. Of course that would have meant that we would have play an over 5 hour round. The course was in decent shape and we enjoyed our very long 18 holes.
Don't go on game day
They close range on ASU game days. Also seems like staff takes a break. Did not see beverage cart for 15 holes in the heat, even after calling pro shop.
Go Devils
I was sent out as a single and soon caught up to the pack. We had to wait almost every hole. No ranger. 6 person group was holding everyone up and the group in front of us quit after 16 holes.
ASU Karsten 10/17/13
Course was in good shape. Greens were a bit slow. It was cart path only which was not noted in the app at time of booking but play moved along very nicely. Will definitely play there again soon.
Tough Track from the Tips
Greens have always been iffy here. When the rough is up as it is in the summer, it is quite a test of golf. Driving areas are mounded and difficult to determine line from tee unless you have played the course before.
real challenging
This course is not really for the beginners. You gotta have a pretty solid set of skills to keep a low score here. It does however entice the golfer to want to get better to be able to play a course this challenging and shoot low
Golf Usage Fee
$2 was added for a "Golf Usage Fee". That's just silly and cheap. Why a course like this feels the need to squeeze an extra $2 out of its players this way is ming boggling. Just increase the greens fees by $2 if it's so important.
Also, for a course like this to require hitting off of mats on the range is pretty cheap.
Otherwise, the course is great and the greens are running true. Pace of play was good. Overall it was a good value.
Well maintained for summer time in Phoenix
Karsten is a great golf course. Pace of play was decent. The course was in really great shape for the summer time.
Summer Perfect
ASU has always been a consistently great golf course in AZ. In the summer the course is always super well-maintained. On this round, with some help from more than norm summer storms, the course was in great shape. The staff are always on point and friendly and overall this is the best course for the money in AZ. My buddy played from the Black and I from the Yellow and the fairways were running nice, greens were holding long shots, and the greens were running slower then I normally remember but all in all perfect summer golf.
easy and quick to play.
Course in decent condition for hot August weather. Greens slow but putted true. Fairways in good condition, rough tough to hit from.
Great summer price; good upkeep and challenging.
The Karsten is a favorite of mine. It's distances for tees are for all skill levels and caters to many different types of golfers.
