About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Nice course, good shape, unfriendly staff as usual.
Real good course,in nice shape. Pro Shop staff is never friendly, in fact was on the phone the entire check in process.
Slow Play
We arrived for our 7:28am tee time only to find out they had overbooked us. We found out the 4some in front also had a 7:28 tee time. We spent over 5 1/2 hours It was terrible. Also suppose to pay $36.00 they charged $38. Some short of $2.00 extra fee.
Well maintained Pete Dye designed course. Takes way too long to play.
The course is well maintained but it took 5 hours and 10 minutes to play. I have to believe it was overbooked because I did not see any empty holes. Seems like management is more concerned in maximizing profits by filling up their tee sheet than providing a satisfying experience for its players.
Challenging but fair in great condition
ASU Karsten golf course is now one of my favorite courses to play. It has a great layout, is challenging but very fair for all levels of golfer.
Course was in great shape, nice layout and a very friendly staff!
Course was in great shape, friendly staff and a challenging layout. Great value.
One of the best courses in Arizona
ASU Karsten lived up to its reputation course was in A++ condition staff was friendly a must play Arizona course
Love Karstens
Love playing this course, the front nine and back are so different, I enjoy coming out to play.
this course has nice features
we got there early and the got us off early awesome
Short Track but Great one
Course plays fairly short so if you hit the long ball you have a lot of close approach shots! Course is maintained fairly well, greens are pretty fast ! Great for the buck! Also very friendly staff!
Good value and good shape for the beginning of the summer.
Course was in great shape for the beginning of the summer. Greens in great shape, conditions were execellent.
Challenging, fair, LOVE the greens.
Lots of moguls off the fairway, rough was manageable, fairways are wide enough to hit. Some hidden bunkers, but if you miss the fairway it's your own fault for being in them. A course tip sheet for each hole is also provided, separately from the scorecard
I LOVE the greens. Fast speed, soft enough to hold shots, plenty of undulation. I live in Phoenix so I know how firm greens can usually be here in this area.
Interesting overall. Mounded too extreme. Deep roughs
Too restrictive with cart use. Often carts allowed to within 90 yards of greens. Several holes other than par 3's are cart path only and distances from cart paths to fairways and greens can be extreme.
Sloooooooooooooooooooow
Slow very very slow. Afternoon round three an half hours on the back nine.
Tough Course
This course is short off the tees but plays very tough.....well maintained.....friendly staff
Front nine rather short, back nine very long.
My wife and I played Karsten on April 29, 2013. Since this a Pete Dye course you can expect many humps and bumps. We found the course challenging, but we didn't find most of the holes exciting. The course has three par threes on front and no par fives, while the back has two par fives and two very long par fours. Since this course is in the middle of Tempe, the surrounding area is not scenic -power stations and poles and many airplanes. For the price, we will not play it again.
Too many blind shots
The course was not in good condition for the price. The fairways had many bald spots, greens rolled very slow compared to other top area courses. Pace of play was very slow, especially for a weekday. I scored well but overall I was disappointed with my first karsten experience!
golf course review
Loved the course, a good degree of difficulty, good challenging pin placements, well managed, well layed out and fair. Especially loved 9 and 18 along the water - good finishing holes for the course. Will play it again.
GREAT VALUE
GOLF COURSE HAS MANY DIFFERENT HOLES THAT CHALLENGE YOU. SOME WATER, WELL BUNKERED, AND LOTS OF "MOGULS" AND SMALL GRASS BUNKERS ON EVERY HOLE. A COUPLE LONG PAR 4'S BUT NOT AN EXCEPTIONALLY LONG GOLF COURSE. GOOD GREENS AND WELL MAINTAINED.
Go Sun Devils!
I enjoy playing different courses all the time. There are only about a handful that I would make a point of going back to and if I find myself in Phoenix again, this would be one of them. The course was in great shape, the service good, and I just enjoyed the layout/scenery. In terms of pricing, I felt I was getting a better deal that other courses in the Phoenix/Tempe/Scottsdale area that were charging $35-50 more.
The only knock I have on the course is the high voltage lines running partially over one of the holes (that did not come into play for me) and this would not keep me from coming back.
greens a little beat up, but fast and true. fairways a little burned out in some areas. links style, with wide open fairways.
I hadn't played for several months and was looking for my first round on my golf vacation to be a forgiving course. ASU Karsten is a good value, challenging from the men's tees but not overwhelming. Played a little slow, and we did not see any marshalls or beer carts out on the course.
