About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Reasons for playing ASU
When you play this course you will see why ASU has produced so many great golfers. The day we played the course was set for the upcoming tournaments and was in fantastic shape and played hard if you were in the rough. A great place to play.
Fantastic Course and a great value.
I would have rated the course 5 stars, had the bunkers been better maintained, They were crusty on top, and the front bunker on #5 had a rubber drain pipe sticking up in the bottom.
Short but challenging
Most par 4's were quite short but because of the set up, if you stray at all, it makes you pay. You feel like you should be scoring better than you end up with. Fairways and greens are in really good shape.
A beautiful, playable course
Out from Philly to visit my friend Screwy and he recommended the Karsten course at ASU. What a great track! The staff was friendly and helpful. The course was challenging not impossible, the greens rolled true and the overall condition was excellent. And they dont overbook times so it felt we had the course to ourselves. Not as scenic as some other mountain courses but a great golf experience.
has challeging holes yet not difficult
We were slightly late from the airpost the staff accomodated us
the pro shop has the best selections in the central and south valley
Embarrassed
As an ASU alumni I was embarrassed by the course condition when you consider we played on March 16th and the fact that they are still getting $120 / round rack rate. So many better options in the area for that price that are twice the course in terms of the shape/condition. Karsten management needs to decide which direction they are going as a course because its on the verge of being a dog track.
The bag drop guys are the best in the business but their service can't make up for the horrible condition the course is in.....
Challenging and Positive Golf Experience
From the friendly and professional greeting upon arrival, the ASU Karsten course is a great golf destination. The service in the dining room is prompt, and the food is top notch. Check -in at the Pro Shop is efficient and always professional. The course is challenging, the condition always good, but the staff makes the difference!
well maintained
well conditioned and challenging greens, good fairway and rough green areas. Minimum of hard pack so you aren't penalized for good shot making. Challenging, undulating greens with tough pin placement. Trap sand is a little too hard and perhaps over watered.
Finding how to get to the pro shop from the parking lot or bag drop is as challenging as the golf course for first timers. Poor, if any, directional signage. Suggest they consider signs to make the arrival more hospitable without have to ask for directions to get into the building.
Overall - lot's of fun!
I like the multiple tees for each level of golfer. The course was in good shape, but I wish they would use more water for the rough - too many areas of dry grass. The "pothole" bunkers are a blast, but very challenging. #9 and #18 are very difficult due to the length of the water along side the fairway.
Better than some "high end courses" I've experienced.
The course is always well maintained and continues to be one of my favorite courses in the area.
five hours twenty minute round
8 minute tee times is a recipe for a plus five hour round on this course which is a good test and well maintained. If they go to 10 minute tee times we would go back.
Very playable course
Good size fairways. Greens were in good condition and not too fast.
Pace of play needed to be controlled. Two very slow groups in front of us.
Not the best experience
Course is pretty challenging due to hills and moguls and a few holes where water is in play and accuracy is a requirement. Pace of play was not good the day we played. Greens and fairways were in good shape, but there may be better options in the area.
great conditions
playing from the black tee's, it was a long challenging trek, but a blast to play!
Will recommend to my friend's!
All around good time
Course had some flood and construction issues but in good shape otherwise
Very slow pace of play.
The pace of play on this course was very slow and there wasn't a marshall to be seen. Also very noisy as it is on the flight path to Sky Harbour. Disappointed for the price.
Good pace of play and good shape
Played on a Tuesday after raining weekend, course was in good shape with 90 deg carts. Pace of play was good, no delays.
Great course, lousy clubhouse.
ASU Karsten is a great golf course. You will hit every club in your bag by the time you are done. It really is a great course. I take out of towners there when ever they show up and they all love it. Every one says I should have scored better but. . . . . . .
The club house on the other hand is not so good. We waited 25 minutes after our round to have someone, anyone come to take our lunch order. There were two other tables with people and they were waited on once during the time we were there. The waitress and couple of other women who appeared to be working there (management probably)walked past us twice and nothing was said, we got to the point we were joking about being invisible. After 25 minutes we walked out, got our clubs and went somewhere else to eat.
Overall, the course is great, the superintendant should be given a raise,, it was in great shape after an inch and half of rain the previous two days. It was cart path only but did not need to bem there was no standing water or casual water anywhere on the course. The staff in the club house should be fired. My buddy and I both said , we would terminate any employee who acted (or did not act) like the food people did. I will take visiters somewhere else to eat, but still golf here.
Truly, the food people were horrible, but the course is great. A must play for any out of towners, eat elsewhere or you will starve.
