About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Great coarse with difficult but fair holes
Coarse had some difficult holes but played fair to first time players we where. The score card provided insight to each hole that made it easy to stay out of trouble. Length requires driver on most holes if playing back two sets of tees. I was lucky enough to be selected player of the day so my greens fee was free and also recieved balls and lunch. GolfNow provide several options for discounted tee times.
Liked the course, hated the speed of play
Course is tight, but fair. Best enjoyed if played conservatively the first time. Front nine pace was fine, but back nine stopped and I never saw a marshal indicating anything was being done to address the 5 hour pace we hit on the back. I would play it again, but if the play was as slow it would probably be the last time.
Great value and great course
Had 9:15 am tee time on a Friday. Played in 4 hours at comfortable pace. Greens in excellent condition. The dormant bermuda grass makes course more forgiving. The staff was very nice and the food in clubhouse, post round, was wonderful. I reccommend this course over many of the overpriced "in season" rate courses nearby. I definately would return.
Tough course, fun challenge!
Classic Pete Dye design, with undulating fairways and green complexes that require strategic shot placement. A very fun challenge and a neat experience to play where ASU alums cut their teeth before making the PGA Tour.
Great course but under the jetway
This course was in very nice shape for a January day in Phoenix. We checked in to a very friendly pro-shop. Practise range is well maintained as is the golf course. Not really challenging from the tees we played but a nice play for my wife and I. The course is well maintained and the greens a nice speed. The only issue is a jet takes off overhead every 45 seconds.
Turtles not hares
If you like a five hour round this is you kind of place - never saw a course ranger. We waited on every tee box starting with hole # 3 which takes away from the experience.
Otherwise a few interesting holes, but at that pace of play it's not for me
Challenging and Beautiful Course
Our group played the Yellow tees. The course is beautiful as always. The greens and fairways are outstanding. The front nine is the easier of the nines. The Blind shots needed to navigate the back nine are very difficult, but are fun. This is the 3rd time playing ASU Karsten and I will play it every year I can. Good time was had by all. The only bad thing was the credit card reader was inop after the round, and we couldn't buy any pro shop items unless we paid with cash.
Good course friendly staff but slow play
Course was fine although it appears that nobody knows how to fix ball marks on the greens. I had a good day fixing 3 or 4 marks on every green. It was a fun course that was hard but not unfair. We had a wait on almost every hole even though it was a midweek round.
Very well maintained course
Played the course from the Professional tees (7002 yards) which is a formidable challenge - thus the 73.8 and 131 rating/slope. Note - two very long par 4's (493 yards and 471 yards) that could easily be par 5's on some courses.
However that shouldn't discourage anyone from playing this course. I played a second day from the Champions tees (6288 yards) and it was a completely different course - much easier.
With the exception of the summer grasses that were of course dead the course was immaculate.
The greens were fast but would easily hold shots from 160 - 190 yards out and putted very true.
This course was enjoyable to play; you can take risks without fear of losing your balls to boulders ( there are none).
Adequate landing area widths; berms lining many fairways help redirect balls back into play - quite forgiving
Very playable.
Being familiar w/Pete Dye courses in Wisconsin, we knew what to expect. ASU is very playable at 6100 w/9 hndcp. Would have been tough from the tips. POP was good at 4.25hrs. Greens well kept and true. Will recommend to others.
Fun, well maintained course.
Course in best shape I've seen it. Make sure you play the correct tee boxes. It's a Pete Dye course so you'll see a lot of fairway moguls, grass bunkers and railroad ties. Strategy almost as important as skill here. Have fun!
The course was great and I would recommend to play here highly!
First, the price from Golf Now was great. Second, this was a course I always wanted to play because of all the ASU champions. Third, the course was in good to great shape. Fourth, the weather was great. Fifth, pace of play was proper in my mind. I would recommend to anyone!
Long and narrow, lots of challenge, great test of golf.
This was an interesting golf course. You are provided with very minimal information, which is unusual in this region. All you have is a scorecard with hole lengths, short strategic advise for each hole and a birds-eye view of the overall course map. The green sizes, pin placements and noteworthy distances (to fairway bunkers, water, doglegs, etc) is not provided. This is a fairly tight, pretty long golf course. At par 70 and 7000+ yds from the tips it feels daunting. It was, however, very playable and score-able. The greens read true which is also rare for this region and as a result the putting was pretty straight forward. There are strategically placed bunkers and hills everywhere and many seemingly well hit shots end up in very unfavorable lies, which is true to the expectation of a Pete Dye design. I would recommend this course and will definitely play there again next time I am in the area.
A dont' miss in Scottsdale...
We golfed this in early Decembe. The course was quiet but there was no attention by the starters or any rangers present. The front we completed in 2 hours and the back in almost 3 hrs. We waited alot on the back and it was frustrating. Course was in very good shape and greens were pretty good. Very good roll on the greens, considering the time of year. I'm sure in their peak season, this Pete Dye track is in alot better shape. Still a good track to play, forgiving but as with the Dye courses, lots of deep bunkers, mounds etc. Found the bunkers to be inconsistent in the amount of sand. I know you shouldn't be there, but some were very hard pan and some were normal, just inconsistent,.
Course is forgiving with its wide areas.
The staff at Karsten ASU was excellent. I was a single who when I showed up and explained my limitation on my golf game. Found another comperable single and sent us out within ten minutes after finishing our warmup. The course was immaculate and the pace was great, we finished in 3:28.
challanging and fun to play
lots of unique features including blind shoots and unexpected bunkering.couple greens have minor patching other than that it is a very enjoyable course to play
No rangers on course very slow round
There were no rangers on the course. This is standard now that OB sports has taken over. The course conditions and staff friendliness has been in decline for several years. This will be my last time playing ASU.
ok, but not great
ok course, that plays longer and more difficult than it looks. Played as a single before leaving from Sky Harbor Airport (only 15 mins away).
I payed $ 70 including range balls, which is too much for this course. In the Phoenix/Mesa area you can play better courses for that kind of money.
