About

Rating 73.8

The highly popular El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort consistently ranks in the top 10 of Florida's many golf courses. The course originally opened in 1917 and decades later in 1992, it was joined by a second 18-hole course, Las Colinas. El Campeon is not only one of the state's oldest golf courses but also one of its most challenging. The traditional design remains largely unchanged except for a renovation in 1926. The course winds through towering forests and numerous spring-fed lakes. The layout features water on thirteen holes as well as dramatic elevation changes that measure over 85 feet across the rolling fairways and undulating greens. The signature hole of the golf course is the par-5 17th. This lengthy double dogleg possesses more hazards than some entire courses do.

Unexpectedly sandy greens

Mission Inn’s El Campeon is one of my favorite courses in the Orlando area. It’s well-worth the drive out to it. Great layout, consistent conditions, a good variety of holes, always get paired up with great people. My only complaint this trip was that the greens were extremely top-dressed with sand and no warning was given. It did not always seriously affect the greens’ smoothness, but there definitely were times that it did. It was also difficult to gauge the speed from green to green. I was disappointed that I paid $70 for greens that were not consistent. A warning next time would be appreciated.

Course is in great shape.

I play this course whenever I am in the area. It is in best shape I have seen. Greens were rolling extremely well. A couple tees perhaps not at their best but fairways and greens were great. I played early morning in about three hours. It has surprising elevation changes for a Florida course. Holes 4, 5, 6 and 7 all play 1.5 to 2 clubs longer on approach to greens.

Green speed was OK not best

I played thanksgiving day. Green was very good condition. But last saturday12/18/21 green was OK conditoon. I live Orlando and drove more than 50 minutes with toll. That kind of green conditon do not attract golfer who live in orlando.

Fun layout course

First time playing here.

Excellent facility. Carts spotless. Typical old pro shop layout. Nice friendly staff.

As I parked a cart was driven up behind the car to collect me and the clubs. Very nice touch as being British bag drops always confuse us.

Having to pay for range balls was the only sore point. No mention of this when booking or when checking in. I was asked would I like to use the range, I said yes and was then charged even though I gave in Cadbury’s chocolate Just a small niggle but others should know.

The course has a fantastic layout. Some stunning holes.

Excellent for bird enthusiasts also.

Would definitely play again.

Thank you

Gordon

Course is is better than best condition

The course is in the best condition I have ever seen it in. Greens were perfect. Anything putted from above the hole was impossible to stop within 5 feet. The layout is terrific,: elevation changes, forced carries, deep bunkers, short and long par 5s. The 17th hole is one of the best par 5s in all of Florida. If you have not played El Campeon now is the time to challenge it, if you have played it before- now is the time to play it again. Pay attention to the pin placements, you have to play all your approach shots underneath the pin- if not you better have a great short game and the ability to make 5 footers for par.

Outstanding Golf Course

The course was in fine shape, and El Campeon has one of the finest layouts of the 60 or 70 courses I have played in Florida, A combination of hills, trees, water, and sand produces many beautiful golf holes. The 17th hole, the Devils Delight, lives up to its name by the way. My partner, a championship flight golfer visiting from Wisconsin, absolutely loved the course.

Another great day on El Campeon

The course was in great shape. Everyone in the pro shop is always so nice. The practice area is the best in the area.

The greens were fast and true. Can’t wait to play it again.

A must play course

El Campeon is always in great shape. There was a state amateur being contested so the course set up was extra challenging. Enjoyed it so much, I am going back this week.

El Campeno was way overbooked so we had to play the other course

We were so excited to play El Campeno but there was an hour wait from our scheduled tee time. They were letting players there for the Sunshine State Amateur out on the course to practice that did not have tee times. The other course was OK but we drove over an hour for our tee time at El Campeno….disappointing.

Disappointing

We finally teed off 45 mins after our scheduled tee time. It felt like a large group of players were squeezed into our tee time slots. The round took over 5.5 hours with a 5 minute wait between each shot. The course is great albeit very challenging however the slow play affected the enjoyment of the day

El Campeon Needs Improvements

This course needs a lot of improvements.

Drainage on 1 and 18 are terrible. Spots on the course need fill brought in as there are exposed tree roots everywhere. Trees on certain holes need manicured.

Course is in dire need of a manicure. 1 and 17 are two of the dumbest par 5’s on any course I have played. The trees in the fairway are stupid and should be removed. Will help with drainage in those areas as well by removing.

Trees on 3 need to be manicured and trimmed back off the tee boxes.

Hole 7 might be the dumbest hole in golf particularly for woman and seniors having to lay up for a longer second shot than they can even drive the ball.

Too many holes look the same and becomes boring.

This course is really hard. The typical weekend golfer will slow this course down to a snails pace.

I have played a lot of courses in Florida and I give the overall rating a 3. It is not a dump, but a lot of better options out there to play. For anyone over a single digit handicap this course is a beat to play.

Greens were great

Always a tough track, greens were in excellent condition. A couple of downhill putts were extremely fast. Watch out for the gator on number 10.
