The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Good course in poor condition
Practice ground was showing overuse. Hardly any grass , virtually all sand. Greens very good but fairways and tees were poor. Little grass growth on the fairways.
Course was in good overall condition for this time of year and as compared to other public courses.
Getting Better
This solid course has improved from when I last played a few years ago. Greens were very good. Some areas had new grass and traps were much better. Fairways very thin this time of year and work still needed there. Rack rates are a bit too high, but would certainly play again for a deal price.
Challenging
The layout is great. No hole is the same. Plenty of water to keep your attention, and the greens…well I played the Cupp and Hills course back to back days and never did figure out the subtle breaks in the greens. The greens are the most challenging part of the course. They certainly defend the course admirably. Course conditions were just fine for January golf. If you are up to having your game challenged, go and play either of the Plantation Hall courses. You won’t be disappointed.. I will return to try my hand at both courses again..someday.
Great course
Not one negative thing to say about the place, one of the nicest places I’ve got to play around Hilton head!
Hilly & challenging greens
We played around noon, The course is in good condition with interesting and hilly greens. Try to play in the morning if you can. It was a bit hard to play for the back nine when the sun was against you.
Sunday Golf
The course was in very good shape, no real surprises, everything is in front of you so you can plan your risk rewards on each hole. You do have to work the ball left and right, greens were firm but somewhat receptive.
Greens were quick and fair I didn’t have any issues gauging speed.

Played the Arthur Hills course today ( 11-23-2022)
This has to be the best kept golf secret on HHI..
The new ownership is making an investment and it shows.
Green surfaces firm and fast ( they seem new).
Arthur Hills layout/routing is a gem .
Fairways in great shape & the new sand in the bunkers make them very playable.
Challenging and a lot of fun.
We will be back .

Real nice challenging course...wanted to go right back out and tackle it again.
Pleasant course
Some greens were rough. Our cart had no parking brake so rolled when trying to stop on an incline.
Greens excellent
Course in great shape! Greens best condition I’ve seen them in last 10 years. Highly recommend
