Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

What Greens?
While on vacation I tried this course. What a complete disappointment. I was paired with a threesome, who were very friendly. However, none of us were prepared for what the greens would be like! In 20 years of playing golf, I’ve never seen this much sand on the greens in my life!! You could hardly see the color green on the grass underneath the sand!
The sand looked more like “rock salt” than sand! Putting was useless!!
I’m including a photo of what I wiped off my ball and what my ball on the green looked like.
When I talked to the pro shop, I was told that I received a discount. For me the course in this condition wasn’t worth $25 yet alone almost $60 that I paid!!
I booked throughout Golfnow on the phone. So I don’t know if there was an alert that they had just aerated the day before. Who aerates in July??
My advice: take your money elsewhere?
Save your time and money.
First time I have ever walked away from a round at the turn. Course is horrible, too close to airport and big earth movers everywhere. I get that the greens are “recovering” from aeration. They should have said “putting on the beach will be the same experience”. My 60 degree was coming in and kicking up sand clouds.
Thanks Golf Now. I could have had a better experience just putting my green fees in the trash.
Close but no cigar
The good. Fairways were very good. Course was challenging. The average...Greens were punched in late May and were still bumpy. Green side bunkers were not raked and packed down. The bad....No water on the course and the Cart person didn't show up until we were on the 18th tee. Really hot and humid. Heard some excuse about a non functioning ice machine.
J, from HHP
Course was in great shape,Cary paths were horrible. Found out the repairs are weeks away. Can’t beat the course for the money
One of the better courses on the island
I can’t say enough good things about this facility. The pro shop was well stocked, the range was in good shape and the service was excellent. On to the course, the layout was one of the best Hills courses I have played. It is a true resort course, set up to get people around quickly with generous landing areas and large greens. It also had some shots that will test your game, especially some of the approach shots. I really enjoyed this course a lot and would play it again.
Great experience
Limited interaction with staff, but seemed nice enough. No starter at the starter shack, so 3 of us singles decided to make a group. Pace was a little slow on the front, twosome allowed us to play through and we finished in under 4 hours total. Course conditions were on par with courses in the area in this price range. Greens we're quick and true. Only complaint is the paths, pretty rough shape and even non-existent in some places.
Great round - played late in day no wait times on tees or greens
Outstanding, on vacation for two weeks played Cupp once and Hill twice, we made reservations for a condo in 2020 and will be making tee times at these courses.
Beautiful layout. Nice variety of holes.
Very nice layout. Enjoyed the variety of holes and was not too tight. Local knowledge important to scoring well as there are places that you don't want to be. Greens in excellent shape.
Difficult but Fun Course
I would say this is the most challenging of the three courses at Palmetto Dunes. Water throughout the course with some tight fairways. It forces you to make golf shots, especially off of the tee. You're not pulling out driver every hole due to some dog legs or lay ups. Great character to the course with some scenic views. Course was in great shape. Will definitely play again.
One of the best values in Hilton Head
I played the Arthur course with a couple friends. From tee to green, the course was in great shape and offered a fun, but fair challenge. The green fees also include range balls. The greens were rolling very pure and the scenery is a beautiful mixture of southern charm and classic Hilton Head low country. I feel like every staff interaction was enjoyable and friendly. I have played a handful of other Hilton head courses and I feel some were overpriced, but I feel Palmetto Hall has been the best overall value. I will definitely go back again.
enjoyable
Just needs TLC. Bumby paths that are cracked all over the place, slow greens, no beverage carts.
Challenging greens
This course has a lot of narrow fairways and rolling greens. Today the greens were very fast and herd to control the pace. For March the condition of the fairways was acceptable, but not close to the great condition of the Sea Pine courses. We played from the senior to which was 6,257 yards. Some of the par 4s where over 400 yards. So in my opinion it was a challenging course for a 20+ handicap player. But based on pace of play and price I would recommend it.
Great course
I dinged curse conditions for two reasons. 1. Some forward tee boxes were barely covered in grass and 2.non play related, the cart paths are in terrible shape. Now back to good things, the greens are in great shape.
Enjoyable course
Enjoyable course in relatively good condition. Relatively flat, not too much water and really no hazards that need to be carried. Women's tees provide a good advantage on most holes. Plenty of sand traps, but not too many that were unreasonably placed.
Nice course, but cart paths need some work
First time playing there. We played the Arthur Hills course. We played in early March. Greens were a bit rough, but fair for the season. The cart paths need some work. You have to be careful because some sections are missing. Overall we had a very nice experience and look forward to playing it again.
