Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
About
The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.
Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.
From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Barony course Photo submitted by JIMMYLAW77 on 01/10/2018
Not Worth the Money
Save your money, and find a more affordable course. For a course to cost nearly $150 to play a single round, one would expect the course to be perfect. While the fairways were pretty meticulous, the green had many black spots and dimples, were folks did not repair their divots, and looked more like a course you’d pay less than $50 for a round. The day that I went out, they were also doing maintenance, which is not unusual for an early tee time, however, we were not told beforehand. Clearly, they had just mowed the fairways, and had blower tractors out. They followed me from box to box, shutting down their tractor to allow me to tee off, then driving in front of me blowing dirt and grass clippings in my face. I don’t intend to play this course ever again. At this rate, I could find the same course conditions and play two rounds, and even if the experience was the same, at least I spent a lot less money. Quite honestly, writing this review makes me wish I had asked for my money back.
Best condition in years!
Challenging course, beverage cart made two rounds which helped in the heat, and the best course maintenance shape in years. Fun to play.
Hidden Gem!
Just finished playing Port Royale Baroney course and had a very enjoyable day. Course was in great shape, greens were 10 on the stimp and pace of play was excellent as we didn't have to wait on one hole and we were a 2-some. A lot of dogleg lefts and water coming into play. It's a fun course to play and a great value for the price. I highly recommend.
Pace of play.
Front nine played quickly. Foursome jumped in front on back nine, slowed pace considerably.
Course condition
The course was in very good condition and very well maintained. It was very challenging because of the windy conditions.
A Generous course for a generous price
The Barony course was a pleasant surprise. Despite its age (and a few of the holes show it) it’s a fair course for the beginner/intermediate player With wide fairways and short distance. The greens were in good shape and had some break. I’m coming back to play here.
Repetitive
Course was great, just seemed like the layout was in a big circle with every hole being a dog leg left. After playing the round, we counted 8 dog leg left holes and only 3 right. Felt like we played the same hole several times.
Course was poorly marked. you need a range finder for sure. One hole on the back 9 I think it's 17 the tee box was set up in front of a tree overhanging and the approach shot was near impossible due to a tree overhanging the entire right side of the fairway. Not challenging just dumb.
Fun Day of Golf
We enjoyed our round of golf at Barony. The pace of play was comfortable, with waiting only on the par threes. Staff were wonderful, friendly and very informative. Would recommend having water stations around the course, especially on hot days. Also, shelters for golfers to use when thunderstorms approach and there is not ample time to make it back to the pro shop. Greens were recently aerated but still provided a fair putting service. We would play Barony again.
Nice course for the money
The greens had been aerated about 2 weeks before, so putting was a challenge. The rest of the course was in perfect shape and was fun and challenging. If you can hit long irons and fairway woods straight you will love this course! Target golf at its best, not many holes to hit driver on. All in all, my group loved this course. So much so we played it 2 days in a row.
Pretty Open but Classic Cobb design.
The greens are classic George Cobb design. Greens-Elevated, sloped, mostly narrow and protected by traps! Off the tee, Not so hard, but the approach shots require thought and precision. The par threes weren’t overwhelming and not all waterholes so that was good. Still, the greens were on the small side and protected. It was a hot, humid day, but we (4 some) played in under four hours . We waited on every hole, but it moved quickly. Not the longest of courses, but still not the easiest of courses. I’d love to play it again in cooler golf weather.
Enjoyable course
Fairways were in great condition, greens had some issues. Good layout , but definitely a target course with its big dog legs.
First Hilton Head Golf Experience
I recently played the Barony course with two of my 4 sons. I am a 9 handicap, and they have no handicap. We were welcomed to the course and after purchasing expensive range balls proceeded to the range where we had to hit of mats. Bummer. The starter was quite insistent we arrive at hole 1 in time which we did and then were directed a 10 minutes cart ride around courts, through tunnels, and finally arrived. Tee boxes were pretty beat up. Reminded me of a muni the day after an event focused on alcohol, not golf. Fairways and turf was adequate while sand traps were very unpredictable. This may have been from the large rains they had the two days prior. The greens were….not green. They had recently aerated and some greens hardly had turf. They putted better than they looked, but still disappointed. On each tee I had hoped for a sign depicting hole layout as the carts had no GPS. There was none! The scorecard was all you had and that was tiny. I suppose they think everyone has a rangefinder and/ or a device. With almost every hole a dog leg it is really key to know where the hole goes and tee distance. Good luck. The staff was fine. Not great but kind enough. Overall it was a great day with my boys, but the course disappointed.
Course was trash - not sure when they mowed anything
Holes in the fairway, high growing uneven grass around the greens. They told us greens were recently aerated but that doesn’t excuse the condition of the overall course
Barony
The greens were aerated 5 days prior to me playing. I didn’t know this until I arrived at the course. It was difficult putting.
Greens need aerated and I understand this.
The only real complaint that I have is the layout or map of the course. I played this course 12 years back and didn’t remember any of the holes.
There was no pictures of the holes in the cart, on the scoreboard or on the tee box signs. I was paired with a couple and the 3 of us totally played it blind. There were several times where we would have done something different after seeing hazards, distances to fairway bends, hazards, etc. I was surprised this course didn’t have GPS, but they need to provide a map of each hole showing hazards, curves, distances, etc.
I would recommend that this be provided.
Aerated Greens
We called the course 2 weeks before playing and they confirmed they would not be aerating greens until after our vacation, so we booked a round. Unfortunately, the greens were freshly aerated and terribly sandy when we arrived. Disappointing round of vacation golf on an otherwise decent course.
