Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
About
The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.
Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.
From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Barony course Photo submitted by JIMMYLAW77 on 01/10/2018
Nice course for the money
The greens had been aerated about 2 weeks before, so putting was a challenge. The rest of the course was in perfect shape and was fun and challenging. If you can hit long irons and fairway woods straight you will love this course! Target golf at its best, not many holes to hit driver on. All in all, my group loved this course. So much so we played it 2 days in a row.
Pretty Open but Classic Cobb design.
The greens are classic George Cobb design. Greens-Elevated, sloped, mostly narrow and protected by traps! Off the tee, Not so hard, but the approach shots require thought and precision. The par threes weren’t overwhelming and not all waterholes so that was good. Still, the greens were on the small side and protected. It was a hot, humid day, but we (4 some) played in under four hours . We waited on every hole, but it moved quickly. Not the longest of courses, but still not the easiest of courses. I’d love to play it again in cooler golf weather.
Enjoyable course
Fairways were in great condition, greens had some issues. Good layout , but definitely a target course with its big dog legs.
First Hilton Head Golf Experience
I recently played the Barony course with two of my 4 sons. I am a 9 handicap, and they have no handicap. We were welcomed to the course and after purchasing expensive range balls proceeded to the range where we had to hit of mats. Bummer. The starter was quite insistent we arrive at hole 1 in time which we did and then were directed a 10 minutes cart ride around courts, through tunnels, and finally arrived. Tee boxes were pretty beat up. Reminded me of a muni the day after an event focused on alcohol, not golf. Fairways and turf was adequate while sand traps were very unpredictable. This may have been from the large rains they had the two days prior. The greens were….not green. They had recently aerated and some greens hardly had turf. They putted better than they looked, but still disappointed. On each tee I had hoped for a sign depicting hole layout as the carts had no GPS. There was none! The scorecard was all you had and that was tiny. I suppose they think everyone has a rangefinder and/ or a device. With almost every hole a dog leg it is really key to know where the hole goes and tee distance. Good luck. The staff was fine. Not great but kind enough. Overall it was a great day with my boys, but the course disappointed.
Course was trash - not sure when they mowed anything
Holes in the fairway, high growing uneven grass around the greens. They told us greens were recently aerated but that doesn’t excuse the condition of the overall course
Barony
The greens were aerated 5 days prior to me playing. I didn’t know this until I arrived at the course. It was difficult putting.
Greens need aerated and I understand this.
The only real complaint that I have is the layout or map of the course. I played this course 12 years back and didn’t remember any of the holes.
There was no pictures of the holes in the cart, on the scoreboard or on the tee box signs. I was paired with a couple and the 3 of us totally played it blind. There were several times where we would have done something different after seeing hazards, distances to fairway bends, hazards, etc. I was surprised this course didn’t have GPS, but they need to provide a map of each hole showing hazards, curves, distances, etc.
I would recommend that this be provided.
Aerated Greens
We called the course 2 weeks before playing and they confirmed they would not be aerating greens until after our vacation, so we booked a round. Unfortunately, the greens were freshly aerated and terribly sandy when we arrived. Disappointing round of vacation golf on an otherwise decent course.
A disappointment, with potential.
This was my first time visiting the course, after hearing many great praises from locals around the area for about 2 years.
To say I was disappointed was an understatement. I've played a bunch of courses on HHI and many of them have similar designs (a lot of dogleg holes, narrow, small greens etc..) but this one seemed as if every hole was nearly the same. I found myself saying "Oh another dog leg left" on nearly every hole. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't feel like it was a very compelling design or very scenic. I will admit a bit of bias since this style of golf requires a lot of patience and execution which I admittedly did not have on a 88+ degree day.
I understand all courses in this area punch their greens and top coat with sand around this time of the year but there was no notification when I booked my tee time, no warning in the pro shop, no heads up from any staff member. After hearing this was a GREAT golf course for almost 2 years I was just disappointed. The practice green was in excellent shape, and I was so excited to play on greens that fast, and what we got was 18 straight holes of bumps, sand, uncut greens etc..
We were there quite a bit early for our tee time, and although I never expect to go out early if I show up early the starter was rude to me when I asked if there was any chance we could get out early, almost laughing at me.
With less than desirable course design for my game, poor green conditions during my visit, a rude staff member, no incredibly unique holes that are must plays.. I'm not sure this will be a repeat visit for me.
Poor Greens condition
Course greens had been aerated and top dressed and of course no one told us about it. Greens very slow and bumpy and inconsistent. Round took almost 5 hours. Charged $35 for my wife to ride along which I thought was high.
Port Royal
Played this course today and could not have had a worse time. Pace of play was slow and the course Marshall got irritated that we complained about pace of play. The greens were aerated but in terrible condition not caused by the aeration. I would never recommend this course to a friend or anyone. The staff (other than the pro shop employee) were rude and unfriendly. Stay away and don’t waste your money here.
Truly a resort course experience
For the price be prepared for a slow round, lots of narrow holes through a housing development, and average conditions. I played this course and Hilton Head national in the same trip, highly recommend HHN over this even though it's a bit of a drive from those staying on island. Would rather spend the extra money and play sea pines than go back here.
Nice shape. greens were in great shape. my only complaint is that there is no map of the course layout which would be helpful considering the carts don't have GPS.
Fun course!
Great conditions throughout the entire course! I was originally scheduled to play there on a Friday afternoon, but I canceled because of early morning rains were heavy. Re-scheduled on Saturday and I was fully expecting the pace of play to be slow. Hardly anyone out there, kinda strange. I’ll return!
Return from pre Covid
A very enjoyable experience.
This course has always been fun to play.
Fairways were good compared to other courses on the Island
Pace of play was good
