About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Always a great experience
My favorite course on Hilton Head Island. Always in good shape, extremely friendly and competent staff. We had a frost delay, but the staff worked diligently to get folks out on the course as quickly as possible. Their great attitude made the wait easier. The course has some very challenging holes, but it does not beat you up.
I always go several times when on the Island.
In great shape for february
Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were all green. Fairways were in good shape and very playable. Greens were quick but in great shape.

Good & interesting course but overbooked
Course was in good shape and staff was good, but
tee times were scheduled too close --- so on almost every hole we waited
Staff came out an apologized, but it was a 5+ hr round

Pleasantly surprised
Having played this course a couple of years ago I had measured expectations. But I pleasantly surprised to find this course in excellent winter contrition. The fairways were green and the greens and tees were in good condition. It was obvious that some money has been spent. The layout has always been challenging and picturesque but the course conditions were greatly improved. Traps (yes I found a few) were in excellent condition..
Having played just about every public course on the island Robbers Row has moved into the top 10% for me.
Slightly better than average.
Amenities were fine. Decent but not great price to play. Friendly staff. Excellent warm up facility, but course is nothing special. I'd call it slightly better than average as in c plus or b minus.
A great course and an even more amazing staff
I have played Port Royal on several occasions and always found it to be in great shape, a good value with friendly helpful staff. But based on our experience yesterday the staff are better than friendly and helpful. They are AMAZING.
My wife and I were at the tee box on the second hole and realized that her phone and purse were missing. We frantically returned to the Clubhouse and began searching for them. The staff immediately jumped in to help out. This was despite the fact that they were very busy getting golfers out on the course. All the staff from the General Manager, to the head of the cart staff to the cart staff themselves were comforting, scouring the carts and the general vicinity for the missing items. They even went out on the course to check with carts that had recently gone out. We can't thank hem enough for their efforts and THEY FOUND THE MISSING ITEMS. Needless to say Port Royal will be our go to course from here on out.

Nice Course
I played Robber's Row in winter conditions. The course layout was great. However, there is no overseeding, so the challenge is in playing tight lies. I struggled with my short game because of the tight lies. The greens were nice for this time of year - just a few with some intermitttent bare spots. This is my favorite of the two Port Royal courses. I would recommend playing this course.
