Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

First Time to Play
We had never played this course. The golf professional was very friendly and the pro shop was clean and neat. The driving range was average. The course itself was in reasonable condition; not great but not bad. The layout was interesting and the greens were pretty small overall.
Scenic Course
This is a scenic course with lots of trees, magnolias and other plants. The course is well designed and depending on the tees you choose the challenge can be varied. No GPS or many markers so you might want a range finder. Staff are friendly. Lithium batteries on new carts are slow on acceleration. Practice area decent although range was closed the day we were there.
henry,
Thank you for your review and rating. Our courses are beautiful and challenging. We do offer a complimentary golf app with GPS. This app is very helpful since we don't offer GPS in our golf cars. Thanks again for your feedback. Hope to see you again on your next visit to the island.

First time on Island
The layout is challenging which we liked. Fairways were in good shape, tee boxes and greens need work. Staff was friendly but we saw the beverage cart at the second tee and never again through out the remainder of our round.
dcsportsdad,
Thank you for your review and rating. Our fairways are in great shape. We are in the process of adding some sod to a few tee boxes and our greens are healing nicely from aeration. Sorry you only saw our beverage cart 1 time during your round. We'll work on improving that area of service. Hope to see you on your next visit to the island.

Perfect pace for the day!
Very accommodating; open course; doesn’t punish you for misses…long but fair.

Gorgeous….hit him straight
Not your momms’s golf courses. Narrow fairways so keep it tight. Greens and tee boxes were great. Very challenging. Only beef….if you pay over 100$ for a round the cart should have GPS, just say’en. But a real beauty. Ya’ll should check it out.
oI8usAWUBJW8tunkBi14,
Thank you for your review and rating. Our courses definitely reward a straight shot. We're glad you had a great time playing at Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club. As you mentioned, we don't have GPS in our carts but we do offer a FREE App that offers all you need for course management. The app can be found on both Android and Apple app stores. Just look for Hilton Head Golf and you'll be good to go. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help. We look forward to seeing you again.

Busy Fun Local Course
My husband in a 6 HC, I am a 19. We had fun on this course today. Somewhat challenging since we had never played here before, but not difficult. Some water and tree trouble, but easy to work around it. Fairways in good shape, Tee boxes fair to good, Greens not bad since they were aerated a couple weeks ago. Very busy in the morning and off to a slow start but as everyone spread out after a few holes it wasn't bad. Cart girl was around several times. Very friendly staff. Nice pro shop, nice practice facility and cold beer and good burger in the grill. Paired with a great guy named Buzz for the round and it was a good day. We booked thru a package-Heritage Collection

Tee boxes were trashed, the greens had a lot of burned out dead spots and generally bumpy. The fairways were in ok shape but not for the usual price to play this course. The beverage cart came around once and said it was last call Sunday afternoon around 130. When we finished the restaurant was closed before 430.
cecurtis97,

Fun Course, Conditions Not So Good
I love Robber's Row. Played in mid June and conditions were great. This past time on July 29th the course was not looking good. Tee boxes were full of patches and dead grass, greens as well with lingering aeration marks from three weeks prior. Fairways and bunkers hurting too.
However, always a fun layout to play. Just wish they would get the conditions back on par with the other courses in the area.
u314161723223,
Thank you for your rating and feedback. Tropical Storm Elsa and heavy afternoon thunder storms did delay aeration recovery. That said, Robber's Row is in great shape now and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Fun place to play.
We enjoyed the course. Very friendly staff. Well maintained facility. Good selection of cold beer on the course and after the round at the pub. We will play it again.

Great course. Terrible service.
Honestly the course was top notch for a resort golf course. The greens were recently punched so they rolled poorly but that’s life. The fairways were in great shape and the course was imaginative at times. All in all the golf was fun.
Now for the rough part. The cart staff and starter were friendly enough but there is no “turn”. All 18 holes are away from the clubhouse and the beverage cart is the only option for food and drink throughout the course. This needs to be told to the golfers prior to their round.
There are zero water coolers (god forbid you give free ice and water when each golfers pays $120+) and we ran out of water on the 8th hole. We saw the beverage cart on the 8th hole and never saw it again the rest of the round. Again, terrible service but I can maybe let that go. At the end of the round I mentioned this when buying an overpriced hat for my son and the grown man (50s at least) stared at me like I was stupid.
I would absolutely not recommend this course to anyone unless the price falls to $75 or less. When on vacation the expectation is to have a good service experience. This course went out of their way to do the opposite. Spend your money elsewhere. Old South, Hilton Head National, Indigo Run, and Oyster Reef are significantly better experiences. Good luck!
Over priced
Course is over priced but less than several other island courses. Several poor tees along with greens with dead spots. No drinks or snacks available on course. Bugs were awful. Always like to be told ahead of time that greens have been aerated. Staff and clubhouse are very good.
u314161915524,
Thank you for your feedback and rating. Sorry your experience wasn't positive. We are planning on laying sod on several tees as well as 1 or 2 greens that have weak spots. Overall, the courses are in good shape but we do have a couple areas that need improvement. We appreciate you playing and hope you comeback after these improvements are completed.

Solid
The course was nice. It was aerated in June and still bumpy when we played on July 20th but they were not too bad. The layout is nice. It gives you a lot of different looks. Short tight par 4’s , long par 4’s, straight holes, dog legs both right and left, different length par 3’s. It was tight but not unfair. Overall it was a real good course and I’d recommend it to anyone to play.
Two disappointing things. Our tee time was for 8:12 AM and they were already 15 minutes behind. That is poor management. How do you get 15 minutes behind by 8:12? Also, the starter was not pleasant at all. I think his name was Richard Head..

Course was in good shape. Greens aerated a couple weeks ago, but nearly healed and rolled well. Staff was top notch, friendly and helpful. It's a tight track & you must think your way around the course.
