Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Information is everything
Nice course. Good people. Only two minor issues…Was given the scorecard to the wrong course. And biggest challenge was no awareness that we didn’t swing back by the club house/grill at the turn. Teed off at 11 and didn’t realize when we saw the food cart early it was our only shot at food/drink until 2 pm.
u314161870503,
We appreciate your comments and rating. I agree, information is everything. I apologize for the misses. I'll address these errors with our team so we don't repeat them in the future.

Great course, fabulous staff
Very welcoming staff in both the pro shop and club house. They made us aware that greens had been recently aerated and issued us a significant discount.
Course was in great shape despite Elsa passing in the last week.
Would highly recommend this course and this team.

Put us on Barony not Robbers roe
Did not play Robbers Row. We got stuck on Barony instead. Hated the course. Hundreds of sand traps sometimes three bunkers in front and two behind. Staff great. Pace play was miserable.
u9719344,
Thank you for your feedback and rating. Sorry your experience wasn't positive. We will work on staffing additional marshals on higher volume days in order to enhance pace of play. Again, we appreciate your feedback.

painfully slow round
Fun layout, course in good condition, marred by slow play and 5 hour round. Not the first time I've been stuck out on Robbers Row, unlike previous slow rounds here, there was active marshalling trying to break up the bottleneck
Ask about aeration schedule
Some courses note aerated greens when booking on website but this one did not, nor were we told when we checked in. Greens had “top dressing” (sand filled holes). Most tee boxes were also in poor condition with patchy grass. Maybe things get dried out in July but these conditions were similar to a municipal/public course, not a resort course. Layout is pretty nice and challenging. Short game practice area is nice too. Staff was nice but would have appreciated the warning about aeration, especially since there’s another course on property.
Enjoyable Course
The course was a fun course. Not terribly difficult but challenging with the small greens and the bunkers. You can see Pete Dye's fingerprints on the course as it has some similarities to Harbor Town. Enjoyed the layout and also enjoyed learning more about the history of the area. I have been to Hilton Head probably 30 times and learned quite a bit about the history that I never knew. First time I have played this course but plan to come back.

Hilton Head Golf Port Royal
Great course with excellent amenities. We play each time when on the island. And will continue to do so.
Sadly, I would avoid
Looks great as you approach the course and then it gets a bit shaky. I walk up and someone takes my clubs and says they'll be over there but they don't tell me where to go. I am able to find it and walk in for two employees to stand around while the phone rings off the hook. I get checked in and I go check on my clubs. I ask the starter where the practice facility is and get a brusk response "over there." In my head I say "sorry I didn't instinctively know man." Hit some chips and putts and get back to my cart where i kind of just wait and wait. Finally get over to the first tee annnnnnd there are two groups waiting to tee off. I should have just called it off from there. The first group, God bless them, is just not equipped for golfing and moving much too slow. A ranger goes by several times and just offers some shrugs. Later the ranger just gives some vague apologies while my playing partner and I just wait and wait. Long story short I got through 14 holes in a little over 4 hours. One cart girl for the whole course (36 holes). I would avoid this especially at the $120 price point.

A very nice course, but a little slow.
It was slow, especially at first. But to be honest, it was the 4th of July weekend too. Loves the layout and the condition. And a very friendly staff.
u528481851,
Thank you for your review and feedback. Your round was a little slow and we were very busy over the holiday weekend. We'll be better prepared next time and staff accordingly to enhance pace of play. We look forward to seeing you again.

Back Home
I visit Port Royal Golf Club every time I'm on the island. I find it both challenging but enjoyable each time. Staff is very accomodating and the clubhouse for the 19th hole is superior to anywhere else I've been. I will continue to play Port Royal every time I'm at Hilton Head Island.
Great course
This might be my favorite course on Hilton Head. There’s a little history lesson for nerds like me. There’s a lot of really neat holes but I don’t think it’s overly difficult.
Bring a lot of balls though.

Great course!
Very fun, fair but challenging course. Greens were a little sandy but in great condition...they rolled true but speed had to be adjusted. Typical for late June/early July beach courses. Would definitely play this course again & highly recommend this to others. Buy your beverages & food before you play though, because they only had 1 cart girl for both courses (Barony) & we never saw her. Bring your own water!
