A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.

The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.

The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

We were scheduled to play Saturday the 24th but it rained. Mary Grace gave us rain checks with no questions even though we had booked with Golf Now. We played Sunday and it was cart path only but we finished in a few minutes under 4hrs. The greens were outstanding. The fairways were ok but not nearly as nice as the greens. The sand traps were extremely wet so hard to say much about them. The tees were ok but again not at the level of the greens. The cart guys were great and the 19th hole is worth a visit. I would say that this has to be one of the best bargains on Hilton Head Island if you catch a Hot Deal on Golf Now.

Overpriced but decent cource

Very small greens that were in pretty good shape. Fairways and tees not so much but was early in the year so may be better in the summer months. $40 cart fees per person are a little ridiculous but seem to be the norm on HHI. Hilton Head National was much better and cheaper. Will not play this course again. Wasn’t a bad course but why spend that kind of money when there are other courses just off the island that are cheaper and in better shape?
