Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Poor Management
First time at this course, and the last. Pro shop employee seemed like I was bothering him because I was playing latter in the day at a reduced rate. There was no one to guide us to the first tee or the course we were on since it was a 36 hole course. Once we got to what we thought was our course there was no starter. Pace of play was horrible. Once we caught up to a foursome after 3 holes we waited 10 minutes at the each hole on the tee while they hit 3 balls each off the tee and we were right there watching. No Ranger of course, so my wife and I left after only 10 holes. No respect from the group of guys in front and I guess management cares less what goes on after prime time. Play early or forget this place.
overall course was in good shape especially the greens and the staff very friendly... a great day out
We came back
A foursome of family and friends come to HH every year to play golf. Both of the Palmetto Hall courses are always on our hit list. The Cupp course was very nice. Fairways, greens and bunkers are always well maintained. Greens were medium fast and rolled well. The staff was helpful and we were happy with the pace of play. There are some holes that had some tricky greens but we had a great time in this course.
Birthday golf
Great place all around from the bag drop to putting the clubs in the car. Love the course!!
Would play others first
Pros: Good condition, good price.
Cons: Driving range closed and no discount. No starter. No rangers and a twosome attempted to inserted themselves on the 8th hole! Quirky bunkers and greens.
Net: Bottom of the list for Hilton Head courses.
Solid, Fun Cupp Design
I’ve played 10-12 Hilton Head courses over the years. I love playing a course for the first time, and Palmetto Hall’s Robert Cupp course did not disappoint. The greens are, well, different. Some are huge, others tiny, and there are some interesting shapes (rectangular, long and skinny) and undulations. Not a lot of greenside bunkers. I played the blue tees, which are 6500 yards. Between the breezes and being at sea level, it played longer than its yardage. The Cupp course is not particularly scenic until the end - where 15 through 18 are beautiful, classic Hilton Head holes that stack up some of the best on the island.
Nice course with some challenging holes.
Great experience, friendly staff.
The course has many wide fairways for safe driving but some challenging holes requiring lay-up or water carry strategy.
Definitely will play again.
Challenging
Both courses at the Palmetto Hall Plantation are outstanding. The Robert Cupp Course was in outstanding condition. Tee boxes, traps, fairways and greens are in excellent condition.
A priority is to keep your tee ball in the fairway. Playing from the rough will make your day very long and stressful.
I would recommend this course to anyone to play.
Enjoyable Round
Had a very solid day at this course. Played 6 rounds at different courses all week and this was one of our favorites.
Beautiful Design and GolfNow Price
The experience was top notch starting with the pro shop staff. They were very friendly and polite as were the cart attendants. The $25.00 special included cart and range balls. The course was in EXCELLENT condition. Greens were smooth and fast, fairways were lush and well mowed, tee boxes were better than the fairways of some courses. Note, this course places a premium on shot making! Many of the tee shots contend with hazards and dog legs that favor working the ball. We played from the blues which made many of the par 4s over 400 yards. The layout is challenging! Will gladly play this course again, especially at this price.
nice way to start a golf vacation
Played here first day in HH. Hot but lots of shade. Good pace of play. Greens in good shape as well as rest of course. Really friendly staff and beautiful grounds.
Best course on Hilton Head
We have played several courses in the Hilton Head are, and so far this was the best. The course challenged us and was in great condition. We will definitely play here again!!
Challenging course which is well designed. A very good value.
Tough, but beautiful course
I enjoyed playing the Cupp course. It had a nice setup with difficult pin placements. My only negative comment is concerning the pace of play; it was simply terrible. Other than that, I enjoyed the course and will play it again.
Immaculate greens
The greens were some of the best I have seen holding long iron approaches and putting fast and true. Good challenging layout used every club in my bag from the back tees.
Tough time off the fairway
Course in great shape. Greens fast and true. Safe landing areas for most holes, but if you are in the rough, its a very difficult play.
Unique, playable and tough.
7 hdcp. Played it twice while vacationing on HHI. Has a nice variety of holes - pretty stout from the blue tees back - more playable from the white forward. In very good shape with greens a little quicker and smoother than most Bermuda on the island. More forgiving than it looks but still plenty of trouble for wayward shots. One of the more interesting courses on the island and a great value for the price !
Very Good Course- tough to play for first time
Course conditions were very good, greens were a little slow, but I’m a terrible putter so that worked in my favour. The only issue I had was having never played the course before the hazards an run outs were not totally apparent off the tee etc, and I ended up losing a few shots to water and out of bounds. Playing it a second time would definitely help with that, overall it’s a very good course in HHI.
We appreciate your 4-star rating and review. We hope you join us for another round soon.
