Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Good Greens - Nice Layout
The Cupp course has some very interesting holes and is really fun to play. The greens are faster than other courses in the area and run true. Pace of play started slowly but the ranger did a nice job of moving a slow group ahead us up a couple holes. There is also actual sand in the traps - traps that are maintained. Course knowledge is a plus.
1st play
Was told by the starter the course was “in great shape” but having played a few others in the past week I would say it was average overall. T-boxes were pretty thin as were the fairways. But got paired up with a great couple who play routinely so they were very helpful. Ran into some slow play and they helped to work around it. Never saw a Marshall to do the same. Overall a good but not great experience. Given the price ($55) it really was fair overall.
Nice course, but had wet conditions due to rain.
Course was very nice and layout was challenging. Greens were in good shape for winter conditions. Was able to play through several groups of slower golfers - everyone was very nice and accommodating. Had to end a few holes early due to heavy rain.
Challenging yet playable for anyone.
Very much enjoyed the round based on the course layout. We were advised at the start that the course was very busy. We played with absolutely no waits. Actually thought we had the course to ourselves. Will be back.
hilton head winter golf
i have played this course every winter i am in HH. the fairways are brown and in good shape plenty of grass to hit off. the greens were medium speed and rolled true. the first hole is a good warm and then it gets interesting. water carries, ball positioning of the tees will require use of all your clubs. long par 4s short par 4s, short par 3s long par 3s. a good mix,
A must course to play
It was in January not busy but a good course to play beware of water
Almost Perfect
For the time of year the course was in excellent condition. However, the narrow fairways and extremely fast greens had me off my game
We were paired with a couple from Canada and couldn't have had a better time.
We hope to play here again.
Challenging Plantation Course
This course had the typical southern water and bogs all around each hole, plus small fairways. At this time of the year the grass was brown and greens somewhat green or black ish. I did not find it pleasureable to play.
Good Course in Hilton Head
I try to play here at least once on my yearly trip. Nice layout and scenery with good winter conditions. Grass was dormant (brown) but lies in fairway were good and greens excellent.
Switched at Last Minute
Party of 12 players was scheduled to tee off on Arthur Hills course but they unilaterally decided they were going to play the Cupp course instead. I was scheduled for Cupp course at roughly same time. Clubhouse staff was ok with the change by the group and urged me to hurry up and go tee off at Hills Course before the party of 12 changed their minds and went back to Hills. Cup is the nicer course. Once on Hills course, I paired with another single golfer. After 2 holes we were upon a very slow group of older, high handicap players, clearly hitting multiple balls each. There were no players in front of them for at least 2 holes and would never wave is through. No Marshall on course to enforce the faster pace of play or move us ahead of the grossly slow group. These 4 old men were incredibly inconsiderate and would have been warned if someone from course actually monitored the play. This gross lack of course management was terrible. Will never play Palmetto Hall again.
Palmetto Hall
A challenging course for both men and women. Open fairways with difficult greens. Group of four felt very comfortable with layout of the course.
I'll be back....
What else can you say when you say you will come back?
Great day of golf on a very good golf course.
Always a pleasure to play here.
Winter Golf Hilton Head
Great course layout. Great deal.
Would play it again any time.
