Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Short round
I had a great time playing this course. This was my first time at this course. It's a manageable course if you play it safe. Unfortunately, thunderstorms got in the way at the 10th tee. I asked for a rain Che k for the back nine and the staff was accommodating. I'll return in a few weeks to finish out my round.
Nice Course
Well kept course. Fairly wide open. Water comes into play on half dozen holes.
A great day of golf.
We enjoyed the course. It was challenging. The bar/grill was very nice and the food was good. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Even w aerated greens....
Was able to play for 1/3 the normal cost because of aeration the day before. Regardless the course is a step above most HHI courses. Shame on me for not having a course guide so i'd know what to avoid. Scenically could not ask for more. Will definitely play again.
Great day to play gold
We played today at Palmetto Hall Plantation on the Cupp course. We got a good deal on Golf Now and there was hardly anyone around so we got on one hour earlier and played virtually with no one around. The course is challenging and enjoyable. Play from the tees that enable you to have chances for some birdies and pars. Would return at these prices.
Looking forward to coming back
It was my first round on the Cupp course, and I enjoyed it. I liked the layout, and we weren't bogged down to a 4.5 hr round of "resort" golf. I will remember the nuances of some of the holes for next time!
Nice challenging course!
I have played at a few other courses on HHI and this time is hard for the courses. This was in top shape even though I heard they don't water. A challenging course with water and sand. Greens were slow for the first half but wind blew them dry from the rain the night before and were reasonable by 4p. Pace was good and hardly anybody out on course. Staff were pleasant and helpful! Is a semi-private course so the members had the first 1/2 of the day for themselves which worked out well.
Just ok
Disappointing services. Course layout was great; challenging but fair. The condition of the cart paths, transition areas were rough. It needs some cleaning and care. But on Hilton Head, you would expect better amenities for your vacation dollar. No water in the coolers, soda machines didn't work, eight bucks for a bag of balls.. Cart was ragged. There are plenty of courses to visit here. They need to make more of an effort.
Great golf course on Hilton Head Island
My wife and I along with two friends played the Robert Cupp course yesterday. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Course was well manicured, greens were true, and sand traps actually had sand in them. Course layout was a good challenge and the 18th hole is a beauty.
I can thoroughly recommend this course.
Pace of Play
Large number of groups too many caused the pace of play be nearly 3 hours for the first 9 ... no staff around...decided call it for the day. Conditions have improved since the hurricane....
Fun!!
The course was in very nice condition. Greens were pretty fast. The undulations make them very difficult, depending on pin placement. I could see where they could be diabolical, if placed right.
Fairways and tees were in good shape. All in all a fun layout with plenty of challenge for any level of player.
The pace of play was pretty slow. It was over 5 hours for the round due to group in front of us. Ranger was checking on and recording times during the round, but didn’t appear to do anything to speed it up.
We would definitely play here when we return to Hilton Head!
Best course this trip
Course was in the best condition of any I have played down here recently. Just challenging enough. Rate of play was good too.
Cupp runneth over
Played mid day, little crowd. Nice day. Greens were perfect and faster than most on HHI. Course near immaculate.
Nice,but.....
Normally a great place to play, but got stuck behind a very slow group. On the front saw the ranger on the first hole and that was it. Proceeded to wait on every shot until the turn, when we called the pro shop for assistance. Thegroup was 2and half holes behind. The bag boy came out and asked if we had a problem. When we explained our situation, he responded with, "well, what do you want me to do?" Ended up approaching the group and asked if they could play ready golf. They did pick up the pace and we finished the round in 5:30!
Worth playing again
Plenty challenging. Many opportunities to "wash" your ball. A few Gators around to keep you company. Overall a fun but not punishing track.
Challenge
Beautiful course in great shape. Not crowded. Challenging. Play is influenced strongly by the wind.
Downside of playing on Monday is that the driving range is closed for weekly maintenance so no warm up before stepping to the first hole.
Love the layout
One of my most favorite courses. Layout has some very interesting holes. Course conditions were very good for early in the year. Friends here for a golf trip loved it. Staff is top notch, always friendly. Cupp designed a great course with a number of geometric features.
