Royal St. Augustine Golf and Country Club
About
Located in Florida’s oldest city, Royal St. Augustine Golf & Country Club offers a glimpse of the area’s lush foliage and native marshlands. The course has a visually interesting layout with elevated, sprawling greens and a variety of bunker shapes and sizes. The moguled fairways and sandy waste areas are two other distinguishing features of the course. It is a tight course with large greens and gentle undulations. The layout provides a “target-golf” experience that puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. The numerous bends in the course in combination with the blustery winds also makes proper club selection very important.

My first round in Florida ... never going back to PA :P Photo submitted by Eric3413 on 08/06/2013
Absolutely Horrid
I paid for 18, based off of the photos I saw on google and GN I expected this to be a pretty nice country club course. I arrived to dingy golf carts in a rundown-ish neighborhood. I was already not happy. Once I got the first tee I could tell it how it was going to go… weeds in the tee box. The fairways are about the same length of the rough. Dead greens. Left after whole 6.
Nice layout; poor maintenance
Even though I enjoyed the design of the course, the
course was not maintained properly. The locals warned us we would need a dozen or more balls since they had lost many in the fairways. The staff was very friendly and helpful. After the round we planned to have lunch at the clubhouse but only hot dogs were available. Overall we did not feel this course was a good value but had wonderful potential if it was maintained properly.
Poor upkeep
Horrible fairways - unevenly cut and difficult to discern the fairways from the rough. Some greens had some repair areas and were wet and slow throughout the morning round. Give it a month or two to recover from the pinstriped green and browned out fairways.
Course has been better
Greens were decent. Bunkers were compacted and very little sand. Fairways were severely over grown, there was no difference between rough and fairway. Starter admitted that they hadn’t mowed in over a month. Renting a mower should be priority #1 here and there’s not really an excuse for not doing so.
Not mowing has everything to with drought conditions causing mid-season dormancy and mowing it too low would/could introduce disease but if you had any clue you would've kept your ignorant comment to yourself.
Golf Course Update: As many of you know we have been unable to mow tees, fairways, and rough at a normal height for a little while now. The greens are still in great condition though. Please continue to bear with us. We purchased a new rough mower weeks ago and it should be delivered soon. We sent two of our other mowers off to be completely rebuilt. Those two mowers should be back very soon. We have done our best renting residential zero turn mowers to keep the golf course at least somewhat mowed, but we know it's not cutting it. No pun intended. This should all be resolved very soon and we can get back to providing you with the excellent golf course conditions we strive for.
Okay course
I'm newer to the game so I only have a few courses to compare this one too, but I can see what others are saying about the course.
The fairway grass is fairly tall, but not as tall as I thought others were making it out to be. It wasn't impossible to hit out of. Only a few tee boxes were in good shape, the others had almost all dead grass. I did like the variety of par 3's and par 5's, definitely helped practice my entire bag
I only played the front 9, but did not think it was a nice enough course for the price, but with it being the closest course to St. Augustine, it was convenient
Mow the grass
I would never seen a course that had Fairway grass that was as deep as the rough you couldn't find your ball in the Fairway even if you hit it right down the middle you had to walk over top of it to see it.. that's all I have to say 🤬

Today the back 9 was closed for maintenance. There was no notice of this until you checked in at the pro shop
Overall the condition of the course was average. The grass had not been mowed in the fairway so it was like hitting out of the rough. The same condition was found on the tee boxes.
Improving but still lacking
I can tell they are trying but now new issues are popping up like the fairways and tee boxes being way overgrown. I can overlook minor cosmetic issues but when the fairways are basically light rough it makes the par fives almost unplayable. Same with the tee boxes, 3 inch thick grass, so on par 3s it’s basically a shot out of the rough.
I have seen some improvements here which is why it’s strange basic maintenance issues like this are going on but hopefully they get it together. Greens were better than they have been.

Golf Course Conditioms
Upon arriving at the 1st tee box, the landscaping was in rough shape and fairways were not manicured. Course design and pace of play were solid but again, the maintenance and landscaping crew need to maintain more often, be more on top of how it looks and plays for customers.
Continuing to improve
Greens are in good condition, rolling nice. Fairways are in decent to good condition, keep your balls in the fairway as the rough is not in the best shape.
Bunkers are firm and need sand. Tee boxes need to be cut as it’s a bit thick when teeing up your ball.
Saw the cart girl only once, very friendly and upbeat but we needed to see her at least twice during our round.

Terrible
Poorly managed and poorly maintained. Tee boxes were awful, with grass so high they were not playable. Some fairways were overgrown with weeds. Sand traps not playable. Driving range was irons only due to size No beverage service on the course on a Saturday. They had water stations on the course with missing water jugs. How much can a dang water jug cost man. Jezzz. I feel sorry for the property owners in that neighborhood with a run down golf course that could be better with some course maintenance knowledge and just plan caring about the place. I have to say is was sad to see overall. They should fill the bunkers with rocks and build more houses.
MOW THE T BOXES
The staff were nice the course has a nice layout. Just have a patch of mowed grass in a spot of the t boxes. Can’t t up a or three and the balls disappears.
Course is not forgiving in the first place.
Course could be great the greens were punched recently but all the greens in good shape.
