King and Bear Golf Course at World Golf Village
About
The King & Bear Course at World Golf Village is named for its designers, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. It is the first and only collaboration between the two legendary golfers. Combining the contrasting styles of the two designers created a challenging course that incorporates features from both traditional Scottish-links courses and new traditions in American golf. The course is known for the numerous lakes bordered by large coquina rock that come into play throughout. The front nine is dotted with loblolly pines while decades-old oak trees provide shade for the back nine. In addition to King & Bear, World Golf Village also offers another excellent 18-hole course, Slammer & Squire.

The juice isn’t worth the squeeze
I booked on GolfNow and I am still unclear how much I paid. Stated price was $135 for a Tuesday afternoon but I think all in it was closer to $150. For reference I paid half that at a beautiful course in Waverly GA on Monday on the way down. Overpriced in my opinion. There were a lot of positives but for the cost I cannot justify more than 3 stars. Talking about stars, the staff were all-stars. From the clubhouse, to the starter, to the marshals - all gentlemen. Genuinely nice, concerned, and honest - when questioned lol. One witnessed a 175 yd 7-iron 2nd shot that landed - and firmly bounced OFF the green. Watching me skull a 56 back over the green added insult to injury. I’m a 15 so we both laughed. Point being, the greens are terrible. Sometimes cart path only is necessary. However, when every drive plugs and every GIR bounces off the green aggressively there’s a problem. The green speeds were consistent except for 9 and 18. Both slow. Layout was pretty cool. Lots of water. Usually I hit OB 1-3 times and miss greens. Today I hit greens that ricocheted into the rough. One landed center green and rolled OB. I like the idea of the course. The houses around the course were beautiful- it’s like the course didn’t belong because it wasn’t as nice. No GPS in carts was a little weird too considering the clubhouse looks like it should be on Hilton Head or Sea Island. Lots of reviews complain about resort fees and cc fees. The $13 is annoying but balls bouncing off greens and plugging in every fairway was a bigger problem for me. I like the name and idea of this course but the hype doesn’t justify the cost. If I wasn’t passing through I’d gamble on less known courses. I hope you enjoy the review.
Overall very pleased
The course was in fantastic shape, the staff did warm me prior to the start of round that the greens are very firm and they were not kidding, it was very challenging to hold a ball on the green, but other than that the course was in great shape. The staff were super friendly and helpful.
What a treat
This course was immaculate, challenging, and beautiful.
Total let down
Can’t believe they charged $169 bucks to play with the conditions the way they are. Not worth it at all, stay away until conditions improve especially at the price points they are trying to charge.
Beautiful layout, greens hard as a rock and too bumpy.
This is a beautifully laid out golf course that seems to be a bit neglected for the price paid to play it. Was impossible to hold any green from anywhere beyond 100 yards. The greens were also quite bumpy, so no true roll to the hole. Some tee boxes were very beat up and sandy. For the money this course should be better taken care of or less money charged to play it.
Over sold
This course two days in a row way over sold. There’s no chance to stay warm. Pace of play is awful it’s 20 minutes in between shots. Staff is great though and course is nice.
First time
Pace of play was real slow. Loved the course layout. Cost was higher than the overall quality of the course. This was a $80-$100 type course not the $140 plus. If you are a big hitter off the tee then this is the course for you
Fun Course
Pace of place was pretty slow, about 5 hours 15 minutes for 18 on a Sunday afternoon in mid April, tee boxes and fairways were typically in good-great condition, around 25% of greens had noticeable/impactful dead spots that needed repair and surrounded the hole making putting difficult.
Overall the course was in good condition, but it would help to marshals keep up pace of play.
Also ran into some kids fishing in the various ponds need tee boxes and fairways that would cast off and yell to their friends during back swings. I didn’t mind but could see how this would be bothersome to other golfers. For an evening round $79 the price seemed fair, I wouldn’t pay the $170+ they want for a morning tee time given the green conditions and pace.
Rough Shape
Course is a beautiful layout, but appears to be neglected. Greens are full of bare spots with green fertilizer or coloring applied in an attempt to make them look better. Fairways are hard and closely mown. Specifically wanted to play here because of the Palmer/Nicklaus connection, but left disappointed. Could be a beautiful place, but needs a lot of TLC. Definitely not worth the $160 charged in present condition.
Renovation
It seemed like the cost was in much better condition prior to the renovation. Didn’t see any changes to the cost at all, certainly below what I have experienced in the past.
Play else where
Staff from the front desk to the starter were not concerned about their guests. We played TPC Sawgrass, Deercreek Country Club, and St. Johns Golf and Country Club with no negative issues. The only friendly staff member at King and Bear was our lunch waitress. The rest of the employees were happy to take our money but had no concern about making sure we finished our round in the daylight. If you want to feel like a number and not a valued guest then this is the place to play.
Good course but get hit with a “resort fee” on top of TeeOff price.
Course was in good shape.
Pace of play could have been better.
Surprised by. “Resort fee” added to the TeeOff .com price that was quoted by TeeOff.com.
I asked what it was for since I had a price I agreed to on line, I was told it is because we are a “Resort.”
Just be prepared to pay it in addition to the TeeOff price you agreed to.
Sooo slow and not one cares
On the weekends in take 4-6 hours there are no rangers, very little staff and everyone including the carts is falling apart.. I mean for an amazing course it’s so sad to see the club house and service be so extremely poor..
if only if you happen to see the cart person they are always out of many things and you only see them once a round..
I have played this course for years and it was at one time a first class course from all aspects.. sadly that is over
The course owners should be ashamed
There is a certain expectation when you agree to pay several hundred dollars for a round of golf and The King & Bear absolutely did NOT deliver! The greens have been killed and painted green along with the entire practice area. While these things need to be done periodically to keep a course in top shape, I've NEVER had a course not mention it during booking and certainly not charge their clients full price with a course in less than good condition. The staff were all incredibly friendly but ownership should be ashamed. I wouldn't pay more than $75 to play this course in its current condition and honestly believe they owe everyone they've charged $200 a portion of their money back. Ridiculous!
Beautiful course!
Beautiful course and conditions. Pace of play slow, but we weren’t in a rush, beautiful day in April and on vacation. Half price thru TeeOff was fair, wouldn’t want to pay full price
