Royal St. Augustine Golf and Country Club
About
Located in Florida’s oldest city, Royal St. Augustine Golf & Country Club offers a glimpse of the area’s lush foliage and native marshlands. The course has a visually interesting layout with elevated, sprawling greens and a variety of bunker shapes and sizes. The moguled fairways and sandy waste areas are two other distinguishing features of the course. It is a tight course with large greens and gentle undulations. The layout provides a “target-golf” experience that puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. The numerous bends in the course in combination with the blustery winds also makes proper club selection very important.

My first round in Florida ... never going back to PA :P Photo submitted by Eric3413 on 08/06/2013
Course not maintained
The greens were horrible - little sprouting weeds made a put bump and jump - super frustrating - not enjoyable.
Poor condition
The first hole was totally dead from to green it did get a little better but greens are full of weeds and art aren’t very putable
Cow Pasture
This course is in terrible condition, take it off as an option. They should not allow us use it until it’s repaired. Tee boxes were dry the fairways with patches of grass and weeds. Waters smell horrible. The greens were with almost no grass weeds were cut low on the greens which made the surface lumpy and irregular. I’ve never played on a course reserved through GOLFNOW this poor.
Terrible
Fairways are dirt. Greens are dirt. WORST conditions I have ever played.
What has happened to the course?
Not played here for a year. The course is in terrible condition.
Greens fairways and bunkers all awful.
Such a shame
Terrible shape
I mean was my day fun? Yes, I was playing golf and not working. With that said though, the course was in terrible shape. The greens were ate up and the fairways incredibly spotty. I don’t remember this course being in such bad shape before.
Great Staff
Friendly staff and nice amenities. Greens could use a little work. Great food and drinks. Shannon and Barb are terrific!!!
Don’t group people together who book solo rounds
This wasn’t the first time I’ve played 18 at The Royal, won’t be my last but won’t be back for a while. I booked a solo tee time for 08:00 for 18. Upon arrival, the man with the clipboard at the beginning of the course grouped me with a set of 3 other players. This should not have been done, and he did not give me an option to opt out of group play. The “starter” as he labeled himself needs to be more polite when addressing people. On a course note, the greens were patchy and inconsistent. Otherwise the course is beautiful. Please, if someone books a solo spot for themselves, let them play by themselves…..was not happy with that.
Burnt out like Tommy Chong
Needs some water and maintenance . Fairways and greens were burnt out with lots of bare spots. One tee box was more like a bunker. Left after nine holes!
Bad shape
2nd time playing there and course keeps going down hill fast. Haven't mowed in weeks because weeds are only thing growing. Greens are as dead as fairways.
Get ready to lose some balls
I liked everything about the place but the course. It was baked, sandy and the grass was extremely spotty. The greens were in bad shape. Each hole has hazards on both sides all the way down each hole. The very skinny fairways and what little rough there is slopes towards the hazards on both sides. There is pretty much a 5 to 10 yard strip of safe landing zone down the middle of each fairway and if you don't land it there, you're probably in trouble. Driver is almost never a good option and laying up is almost mandatory on many holes just because of how much hazard area there is. Super difficult in a not fair or fun way.
Worse than the recession…
I remember when they were practically begging people to play Royal St. Augustine..a round, bucket of balls, hotdog and a soda or beer for $18 after 2pm…the course was good (not great) but for all that the price included you couldn’t complain….but $55 in the morning and $38 in the afternoon is almost an insult to anyone, whether beginner or single digit player. I’ve played Royal a couple hundred times and have always come back no matter the condition or sometimes steep price but this may have been my last time. Staff seemed as upset as the golfers and more likely because they were hearing the gripes and complaints of paying too much for a dirt track. There were tee boxes that looked like sand traps and green side bunkers with more grass in them than the tee boxes. I understand that they recently underwent ownership change but this place has too much ground to get back to the Royal of even as recent as two years ago.
Desperately needs to be watered
Beautiful course needing some TLC in the irrigation department. Fairways and some greens extremely dry. That being said, it may be due to drought conditions. Otherwise a very nice course.
