Royal St. Augustine Golf and Country Club
About
Located in Florida’s oldest city, Royal St. Augustine Golf & Country Club offers a glimpse of the area’s lush foliage and native marshlands. The course has a visually interesting layout with elevated, sprawling greens and a variety of bunker shapes and sizes. The moguled fairways and sandy waste areas are two other distinguishing features of the course. It is a tight course with large greens and gentle undulations. The layout provides a “target-golf” experience that puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. The numerous bends in the course in combination with the blustery winds also makes proper club selection very important.

My first round in Florida ... never going back to PA :P Photo submitted by Eric3413 on 08/06/2013
beautiful day
Great day on the course but a bit windy. Pace of play was super great. Finished my round in 2 hours and 45 minutes. shot an 87. Not my best day but a good day nonetheless.
Lack of Operable Golf Carts
At Royal St. Augustine, Social Distancing golf course style mandates single rider golf carts unless you are with a family member then you ride together. Necessary in these cautionary times and great for the single golfer, even when playing with your regular group of friends, as you ride alone. At our 12 noon tee time 7 golfers waited for a cart. None available, all being used. This single rider results in significant use of their fleet throughout the day. My last two golf tee times here, early afternoon Hot Deals, were both ruined by depleted golf cart batteries. Most recently on April 22nd three holes on the front nine required a push to level ground to continue play. On the turn we waited 21 minutes to trade carts. We watched as a cash tip to the single worker in the cart barn got you a cart sooner to tee off the first hole while we waited at the turn. We went to the Pro Shot requesting a rain check for nine holes, but the pro-rated rain check for the Golf Now price does not cover a future nine hole play. Why not just a voucher for nine holes regardless? I also asked about the pay for a cart practice. The entire fleet can not make two 18 hole rounds as claimed by the management. As we finished the back nine we watched the group ahead as one cart pushed another on the 16th hole. At #18 there was a new course hazard, an abandoned gold cart 95 yards on the right fairway on an incline. Either space tee times to meet the capability of the cart fleet or Golf Now must advertise the adverse conditions of play.
Covid-19 round unorganized
first off the course is in okay shape and it's a tight challenging course. Showed up about 10 minutes before my tee time and grabbed a cart, checked in with the counter guy and proceeded to the first tee box. waited until my tee time to tee off and once I got two shots in to the 1st hole the manager came out and asked me to return back to the club house because the cart I took was for someone else. I was dumbfounded because there was no one outside saying or managing anything. I had to wait an additional 34 minutes after my tee time to get a cart and play my round because they overbooked the course and mismanaged the whole situation. I hope they learn something from all of this and NOT over book the course with single carts. You need to only book 2-3 ppl only. and my cart died on 18. I ended up shooting a 81 and the two guys I played with were great. After the opening crapshow it ended up being a good round of golf.
Visually Painful to play
I play here once every few years and am reminded why it's only that often.
The course is very unappealing to the eye. Tee shots are hit to blind landing areas, ski moguls are everywhere and throw even good shots into terrible lies The fairways are crowned (or steep slopes) so that shots all tend to roll into the woods/weeds/water.. There are lots of blind hazards and awkward shots to hit at imaginary targets. "Pick a line and hit and hope."
We had to wait for carts as all were on course. And only had one guy prepping carts as they returned. "Social distancing" guidelines were not being followed. Open pro shop and bar encouraged closeness.
Not a favorite!
However it was a beautiful day and sure beat sitting at home!
Hi Jon, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your round. The layout is certainly challenging. I think it gets easier the more you play it though. You can start to figure out where to hit it and miss it We actually are doing our best to follow all social distancing guidelines. That's the reason you had to wait for golf carts. We are limited by the single rider only rule. The pro shop is open, but we are sanitizing the counter tops and door handle constantly. We also have blue tape on the floors 6ft apart to show where you should stand while in line. I don't know what you mean by the bar encouraged closeness. The bar is only open for takeout food and drinks. We also have blue tape on the floor 6ft apart in there showing people where to stand while they pick up their order. We are taking everyone's safety seriously. We also sanitize the carts after each round, removed all rakes, removed water coolers, and placed obstructions in the cups to discourage people from touching the pins to get their balls out. We appreciate your feedback and hope you give the course another chance.
Long time ago
Nice layout. Challenging holes. Greens were rolling nicely with a good speed to them. They, however, had some weeds, growing on them which was disappointing... Staff friendly.
Tight holes, with aot of trouble. A lot of white post, which should be red, or yellow.. In my opinion.... Good fun, Need to know this course to play it well, So I will go back to play it, hopefully I can navigate through the true a little better.
Great day
Awesome day greens were fast course and play was great going back soon
Royal St. Augustine Golf
We have played this course over the past 12 years multiple times each year. Today, given the unusual circumstances all of us are dealing with, it was a pleasure to get out of the house after a solid week. Golfers are separated by only one person per golf cart, even considering that my wife and I golf together, drove together and live together. No starter, Tee times are first in line at the first tee box, mostly just singles and twosomes going off. The gentleman in the golf shop was is pleasant, friendly and informed us of the single golfer per riding cart rule. First impression, I have never played this course when the fairways have been as dried and brown as they were today. The water level was very low in the lakes and fairway canals that really highlight the drought conditions. Greens, fairways and approaches were fast. Another observation that stood out was the lack of ongoing course maintenance, especially the fencing around the course that needs significant repair. We passed many non-golfers walking or biking the golf cart pathways. Not a good security feeling.
Tom and I during Covid-19
42 front 9 and 52 back 9. I had trouble in sand. I like the price and layout. Im glad its open during Virus epidemic.
Tricky but interesting layout
If you're looking for a Donald Ross type layout you've come to the wrong place. This course can be very frustrating because of the narrow fairways and lack of overlapping fairways. Basically if you hit an errant drive, the ball is probably lost in the woods, water, or native grasses. Best suited for accurate hitters as duffers will struggle. The course is truly a fun drive on a cart from hole to hole. You'll go through neighborhoods, bridges, swamps and such. Relax and enjoy it.
Not for beginners
We read reviews about this course and because of the Coronavirus, golf is something we can do together and the courses that are still open and not putting foursomes out. It’s a narrow courses with rolling fairways and due to lack of rain the course is dry making it more of a challenge. Will definitely play it again after some much needed rain.
Not a long course but challenging
First time players bring extra balls... Several holes have small landings areas with steep slopes run offs into hazards and out of bounds. Prior course knowledge is a must. Greens were in good shape but some of the fairways were too brown for this time of year. The bunkers need some fresh sand. I would suggest better directional signage between holes. I enjoyed the track forced me to focus on other aspects of my game.
Enjoy the day.
The staff was friendly and courteous. The pace of play was good. I enjoyed the day with my wife.
Hello Mr. Godwin, I apologized for the confusion and did my best to make things right. We were very busy due to the single riders only restriction. Business is significantly down because of Covid-19 and I have to maximize revenue right now to survive. It's a difficult challenge to balance booking too many tee times and blocking off too many times. It's been a learning experience. Hopefully this will all be over soon and we can return to normal operations where this kind of thing will not happen. I apologize again and hope you will come back another time.
