This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.
Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.
There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

Bad Day of Golf, Sadly
We booked a tee time through Golf Now and were totally disappointed in the course at Mesquite. The conditions were horrible, particularly on the front nine. Small things, like having a towel at the ball wash machine, didn’t happen anywhere on the course. The course is poorly marked which makes it hard to get around and the yardage markers were hard to locate, if they even existed. I know the course was damaged during the big rains last year, but other courses have recovered much better. Finally, course personnel laughed when we complained that the sprinklers came on while we were putting on 18. We got soaked. They also came on on several other holes right before we got to the green greatly affecting our shots to the green. Poor customer service and apparently no current course superintendent according to one of the workers. Not a fun round. We will not return to Mesquite.
No Investment
While the course has lots of promise, it's really clear that no one has placed any investment into the maintenance of this place in a long while. The bridges are falling apart, the course has big potholes on it, the fairways are not maintained, and while the greens rolled fairly well, it was over a combination of grass and bare patches. In the Palm Springs areas, compared to other courses, this place is a real eye sore. Would not go back.
This course needs some work
The course is coming around. Front nine was in good shape, but the rough on the back nine needs to be cut. Pace of play slowed, due to people trying to find balls. Good sand in the traps. A little time and work and it will be a great course.
out of touch with reality
this course is ideally located in south Palm Springs, has great mountain views, and could be a big success catering to locals and budget conscious vacationers. unfortunately the owners chose to price it above dozens of nearby and far superior courses for a reason only they could answer as the place is rightfully deserted. If this course put out a $32 price for all comers it would be swamped with locals looking for relief from winter rates. the course itself is a mundane layout but would certainly be entertaing enough at a reasonable prices.
Stay away
I can find $25 muni courses in better shape. A big sign said "now open". I guess it had been closed. I was going to ask about it but ended up just leaving. The over-seed has barely taken, looks like not enough seed was used. Greens were ok. There had been a recent fire that burned all the trees and brush around the 18th tee box that has not been cleaned up. There were zero marshalls. Our biggest gripe is the lack of mown grass in the rough. Most holes went from a 20-30 yard wide fairway to 12-14" high Bermuda - now mown rough. Drop a ball in front of you in there and it disappears. Hit from the tee into that stuff, the ball is gone. I missed 4 fairways and lost 4 balls. It just wasn't any fun. See picture of fairway vs rough and then the rough around a fairway bunker. It was awful.
Course on rough shspe
Played here 3 years ago. Played November 25/17.It was a different course. I know the course only open 3 days ago, but they shouldn’t have open. The course was in terrible shape. The first cut was so long, we were losing balls. They should have been paying us to play there. Besides thst it a good track.
Mesquite goes downhill
The course is in the worst condition I've ever seen. Fairways are rough and the rough is not playable. The greens in very poor condition. I will not play it again at any price.
Come see us 2017/2018 season.
We apologize for the unhappy customers here at Mesquite, we are doing our best making sure we have our course in top shape again.
Don't Play This Course
It appears ownership is pushing this course to closure. Hot Deal and a promo code made this round $5.49, which was exactly the value. Tim in the pro shop is a very nice guy.
Too Bad for the neglect
course maintainence is terrible. No cleanup of bush and tree trimmings along side fairways. Traps are full of weeds and little sand. It's no wonder there is little play on the course. Only positive is fast pace of play with so few plalyers. Also, greens were in reasonable good shape.
Dated
The club house and layout suggest this was a great place at one time, but nothing has been maintained. All the staff members were very friendly, but the course conditions are pretty bad.
On the edge
Mesquite is a course on the brink of sliding into oblivion. The fairways and greens were well watered, mowed and kept. Many tee boxes were not level. There was a vast amount of downed trees and vegetation that needed removal so visually it was bad.
The ponds/water features were dry and the bridges crossing the rivers/streams while safe, were noisy and in need of repair. It's simply a golf course that has had too much deferred maintenance
The staff were pleasant and made the difference. They need ownership to step up and re-invest in the course itself. Overall 3 stars with a good layout and maintenance issues
It is what it is!
Anyone who says this course is the worst they have seen it obviously hasn't played there in several years. The course is, in fact, in the best shape it has been for the last three or four albeit not perfect. However, the greens are in great shape (they are a little slow) and so are the fairways. What more can you want. Pace of play is normally very good but no matter where you play, or what you pay, if you get behind a slow foursome it's frustrating. Yes, the bridges are in bad shape - just drive carefully over them. Correct, the clubhouse is not open right now and it helps to know that before you arrive at the course. The golf shop has a cooler with drinks, snacks, beer and wine. Most of the staff couldn't be nicer. The cart staff really try and are very helpful. I got a hot deal so value for money was excellent but if you pay the posted rate then it may not be considered so but in my opinion all of the courses in Palm Springs are too expensive for me, as a local, at this time of year.
Play it while it' still open
OK I am a local and have been playing Mesquite for years. It has been in poor shape the last 4-5 years but now the level is even lower. We had high winds two weeks ago and they still haven't cleared the debris out so losing your ball under a pile of palm frowns was another hazard to deal with. The cart bridges are in such poor shape we cringed when using them,. Pieces of the bridge straps were lying on top of the bridge! It was a cartoon moment but no really funny. The greens and fairways were in decent shape but this is April and after May they turn down the water and it's like playing on concrete. This place must be a huge tax write off for somebody because there is no way they are making money and it shows. If you want to play it do it soon. It will be closed like many other courses here victim of the change in the popularity of golf and the need for more development space for condos.
Sad
Played this course many times and this has to be the worst it has ever been. Someone needs to buy it and give it some love. If I wouldn't have got a hot deal I wouldn't have played it. There are too many other great courses around the area. It's sad because our place is right on Mesquite so it's convenient but not worth paying anything to play it.
