This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.
Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.
There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

Stay away. Not worth the money at any price. Not even free.
This course is in poor condition
When I arrived at the course, my initial impression should have told me to leave. But, since I paid in advance I opted to sign in and play. The guy behind the desk in the pro shop couldn't have been less inviting. He let me know that the course was in receivership and in poor condition. The restaurant and snack shop were closed indefinitely and the course was not maintained. The ponds on the course were either totally dirt brown or emerald green algae. I'm sure the ducks that were paddling around in these nasty ponds would eventually get sick. The golf cart bridges were in terrible disrepair and dangerous. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. The only funny experience was the 2 women they wanted to pair me up with came with a service dog. This was the first time in 45 years of playing golf that I saw a dog caddie riding in a golf cart.
If you are visiting Palm Springs and have an opportunity to play golf, do yourself a favor and skip this course. They over charge for what you get. Poor course layout, maintenance, management, golf carts, (dirt) cart paths, and they actually told me they had a 90 degree rule. All I can do is look back and laugh. Maybe a real golf course company will buy this place and restore it.
Don't waste your time and money.
Better
The condition of the course has certainly improved over the last two years. The fairways and greens are in good condition. Although slow, the greens roll true and are well-maintained. The bunkers could use some work. It is a good value for what you get. There were tee times available, a reasonable price, and a friendly staff. I hope this trend continues, as it is a classic old Palm Springs golf course. The clubhouse needs to be re-invigorated. I will come back.
Rains have improved
Course has been known to be very dry, but winter rains have helped to improve it. Bunkers are fair and full. Greens designed small but stoppable shots in. Long par 3s from blues. All over 160, good challenge.
One of few courses with 6 par 3's and 5 par 5's
Course is fun to play with fast greens and abundant hazards;
fairways and greens are in great shape but bridges and water hazards are very unkept
Only as a last resort
The staff was very friendly, a Sloth moves faster than the golfers. The condition of the course was that of a mideocure public course. Wear a construction helmet when playing the holes are so closely related balls are coming from all over the course.
Value
Fairways & greens nice but a lot of maintenance needed otherwise. There is not the value for the rate charged.
If you have nothing better to do, it's the only reason to play here. Too many other better options
Beware When Off the Fairways
The greens were good cindition, the fairways were decent, but off the fairways looked like a goat ranch. It sent signals they are not financially sound or have enough to pay labor to provide for better course conditions.
Not a great value
Friend suggested we try course. Not impressed. Played a course the day before for less and much much better condition and value. Front nine had a smell that was not golf course smell. All bridges that we crossed were almost in disrepair. Jarred our teeth loose. And when we got finished had young men cleaning golf clubs on cart. This was nice offer but is only expected at excellent country clubs. This was not country club quality. Would not and will not golf there again. Unless they pay me.
Fairly easy layout and fun to play
This course isn't nearly as challenging as most but still a good round for higher handicap or senior golfers looking for a nice round at a good value. Mostly flat with few hazards, and bunkers are not too difficult. Greens are fairly small. I shoot around 100 so it fits my gam nicely.
Declined in last year
Course condition was fair at best. Played here last year and thought the fairways were smoother last year. Crossing bridges in cart is a little scary with loose boards needing repair. Greens were pretty smooth but slower than most of valley. Price point below a lot of courses so in that way you get what you pay for.
great value
Course is in great shape after all the January rain. For the price and location in Palm Springs and with a good driving range you can't go wrong at mesquite!
