This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.
Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.
There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

Shocking Transformation from new greenskeeper!
Last played here end of May. Course left for dead during the summer. New head superintendent hired. Opened up late November, but worth the wait. Everything that was wrong last year(tees, circles on greens, patches of grassless fairways). Front 9 opened just over a week, so the greens were not mowed as low as back 9 greens that have been open for a month. Back 9 greens speed about a 10,front 9 about a 6, should be about another week till they are mowed the same. All fairways in excellent shape, mowed low with no bare spots from last year. Bunkers looked good but was not in any. Biggest improvement were the tee blocks.
MESQUITE
Was extremely disappointed about not being informed we were only to play the back nine twice as the front was not open and it was also cart path only The offered a coupon of some sort for nine holes to get a discount for next time ( big deal ) wont play if it isn't fully open and not cart path only
the course was in decent shape for this time of year but the greens should have been cut as they were a little long.
Buyer Beware
The is the worst course I ever played. DO NOT PLAY HERE. Dont know why Golfnow would even list this course...
No such thing as a fairway or green. Was not even worth the 40 dollars (twosome). Should have gave my money to a homeless person instead....
Walk, don't run.....
Normally, this course is fairly decent based the on-line green fees being charged. I'm not expecting perfection for a $15 round of golf. In fact, I played there in December with no complaints.
But upon arriving on July 15th, I have one word to describe the condition of the tee boxes, fairways, bunkers, and greens.....ABANDONED. The bunkers were full of debris and weeds, and half the green were almost entirely devoid of grass. If you don't mind putting on cracked dried mud reminiscent of an African desert, then this course is for you. But for everyone else, you'll have better results putting on the nearby sidewalk then on the greens I experienced. So my recommendation is to skip this course during the summer months and hope that conditions improve during the winter. I paid $15 for the round, but $1.50 would have been more appropriate.
Worst course in the valley
I have not seen a course in such a bad condition as this one green were plain dirt now you can imagine how the rest of the course is would never play there again and would recommend anyone to go out there
Course condition was the worst
This course is not prepared to play.
There were no grass on the fairways and greens.
Play from the rough
I felt I had better lies from the rough than the fairway. The fairways were in horrible condition, many times my drives were in the fairway and my ball was on hard pack dirt or in weed beds. Many of the greens were in similar condition. I typically had better lies from the rough, because at least my ball was supported by something other than dirt. Mesquite could be a great course, but it needs a lot of money to fix just about every aspect of the course. I'm not even sure the $19 I paid to play is worth it, there are other courses in the desert that have similar prices but are in much better condition.
No Oasis in the Desert
The snowbirds are gone and so is the watering schedule. Holes from burrowing animals add to course difficulty and not in a good way.
needs some love
Mesquite is a course that has had it's heyday. It needs a bit of love overall. For the $ it was great and I am glad I played it, but is in a state of disrepair.
Great practice course
I will use this often for practice rounds and for celebrations golfing
friendly staff and water hazards
Friendly staff at check in, starter and cart boy.
Maybe they are water restricted, but it would be nice if ALL the water hazards had water in them.
challenging
The course provided lots of challenges. As a first time player it was difficult for club selection because of the unmarked ravines that ran through many of the fairways. Once you know they are there, it's not too bad
There Is A Drought
I'm happy to see this course is improving - although slowly. The greens are much, much better and I can live with dry tee boxes (after all you can tee it up). I payed particular attention to the bridges and found them to be perfectly safe although a little rough but if you don't drive over them as fast as the cart will go you shouldn't have a problem. Even with a weak back! Given the severe drought in California we perhaps can expect to see conditions more like this at other courses. Too bad for the 'snowbirds' but that's just the way it is. Learn to love it.
fun course
very playable course with super valley views and hard to read fast greens.
looking forward to playing it again
The course is in good condition, the fairways are soft, and the greens true. there is still some work to do on the bridges, so you must take care while crossing them, but overall, it was an enjoyable exxperiance, and we look forward to playing it a again. Including seeing the fox that crossed fairway 6 while we were waiting to tee off.
Always
Played here before .great access from where we stay always liked this course. The bridges could use some repair and the tee boxes also
Limited maintenance budget?
Front nine in bad shape, pretty much everything: tee boxes, fairways, greens,
Back nine somewhat better. Do not pay more than 30$ or you will be angry
maintenance
backlog of maintenance. bridges are very rough, dangerous for someone with a weak back.
very dry throughout
some greens suffering from lack of water
washroom on 4/8 needs attention
Poor condition course
Tee box - poor grass condition and uneven
fairways - patchy
greens - ok
