Editor's Note: Course closed for businss in 2022.

This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.

Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.

There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

Relaxing round

Very relaxing round. Not pressed by people behind, and very few people in front to slow the play. Caught up to one group that were very good about letting us play through.

This course is in rough shape and needs some serious watering. Very dry in many spots.

The gal in the pro shop seemed to look down her nose at us as if we were below her. Snooty would be a good word. Other staff were terrific from the marshal to cart guy. The course was very dry and could use a few days if not a week of good watering. The views were nice and seeing road runner birds on the course was interesting. Overall I wouldn't go back. I guess you get what you pay for so I would rather pay a little bit more and play on a nicer course.

Close to where we stay

The sand traps have alot of weeds and grass on certain holes. Fairways need more irrigation as there are many dry patches. Also some of the bridges need new boards before carts actually fall through.

Course needs lots of attention.

Condition very poor, needs lots of TLC on fairways, greens and tees. Lots of tall grass around trees,, hard to find balls.

Needs work

Course is in rough shape. Tee boxes and rough especially. Greens aren't bad though. In need of some tlc as it looks like it's been neglected for a while.

Low price, but not good value

Course condition is okay, but not great. Lots of parallel fairways. Nothing special at all. I would not play here again even if the price is relatively low.

Good Value

This course is a good value. Play at certain times and the cost is very reasonable. Has challengeing holes and a ravine that runs through the course that gives me fits. A fun course for not much money.

Not worth the money

Played Indian Canyons South the day before for the same rate - that course was in excellent condition, had beautiful new golf carts and was a fair test. Mesquite had a major traffic jam at the first tee box; had to search each tee box for a decent placed to tee up due to dead grass & dirt on box. Fairways had dead spots and were generally woefully in need of water. Bunkers had grass growing in them. Only positive was that the greens were in nice condition. Played like a tired, old muni course but is priced as if it were a nice course.

Not good value

Would not play there again. The holes are not clearly marked. We were told to use the 90 degree rule but there were very few cart paths, so that stAtement didn't make much sense. No drink cups were provided although there was ice, I'm not sure what they thought we were going to put it in.

Older course, bare spots in fairways, but still a fun round.

This course is showing its age. The fairway is thin and has some bare spots. Greens were in good shape. Course is close so you have to keep an eye for tee shots by other groups on several holes. Overall I would play again at a good rate.

Front nine in bad condition. Trash in waste areas, grass burned out.

The greens are small, hard, and not in the best condition. Signage is inadequate, especially location of the next hole on several holes, and distance markers are nearly nonexistent, except for an occasional red piece of wood at 100 yds. Some holes have 2 tee boxes, others 3.

Practice tee is unkempt and the ball dispenser is hidden in a shed-like structure with no bathroom.

The tee boxes & grounds need work, great views

The course is quite challenging , lots of water holes and bunkers. The fairway lies are difficult, should use winter rules.

The course was right for our capabilities.

My wife and I played here on Feb. 6/13. We arrived early and were allowed to start early . The staff were quit friendly and helpful. Greens were in good shape and the fairways were good as well, very well groomed. We will definitely play this course again.

Greens were in very good condition.

Enjoyed the course with all the older tree lined fairways. The greens were in very good condition, firm but the ball would still react if brought in with spin. Fairways were a little thin but playable. We were treated very well from the moment we arrived.

horrible condition

We were very dissappointed in the course this year, it is in horrible shape and not a good deal for the money at all. We have played it several times in the last few years and had made a note of how nice it was and a good value. Not anymore and we will not go back.

An enjoyable old-fashioned golf course.

The condition of this course at the moment is poor. The fairways have not grown in and there is not enough grass. This is also true around the greens for chipping but the greens as a whole are in very good shape.
